Today I am sharing a card that I made for a sketch challenge over at Create with Connie and Mary. Connie Babbert and Mary Brown host a weekly Stampin’ Up! only challenge, and this is my first time participating. I am cuckoo over this week’s sketch and simply couldn’t pass it up. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Stamp on Designer Series Paper. My original idea was to stamp this big ‘ole moth over a rainbow of pastel colors. As I started gathering cardstock I thought would work well, I stumbled on some strips of Epic Day This and That Designer Series Paper. No, seriously. I LITERALLY stumbled on them, slid two feet on the Fungeon floor and smacked my head on a box of washi tape. I decided the Swallowtail would look great stamped on light pieces from this Epic Day set of papers. Since I chose to feature more of the Pool Party here, I allowed Calypso Coral to be the accent – and made the card base with Calypso Coral.
- Round the Corners. I like that this sketch rounds the corners in the bottom, right of the card. Since my corner punch went missing a couple of months ago (my original one – which has since been replaced – took an adventurous trip down the interstate on the roof of a customer’s car), I forget that corner rounding is even an option. Duh! It’s always good to be reminded. I like a rounded corner – and I especially like when just one or two corners are rounded like in this sketch challenge.
- Stamping with Offset Pieces. Want to know how I stamped the Swallowtail on these pieces while maintaining the appropriate amount of space between them? I cut out my Designer Series Paper pieces and applied 2-way glue to the back of each piece. I let the glue dry (the glue becomes a temporary adhesive when dry) and positioned the pieces on a scrap piece of paper with small gaps between each one. I then stamped the Swallowtail in Jet Black StazOn over the center of the pieces. My pieces were ready to mount on Basic Black cardstock. Woo hoo!

All of the strips of DSP are 1-1/4″ wide. The Pool Party pieces are 3-1/2″ long. The Calypso Coral pieces are squares. I hope that helps!

WOW ! I agree with Patti that this is a winner So love what you did with this stamp . He can be so overwhelming but, you have done a great job displaying him . And what about this sketch ? I love how you used it !! Connie and Mary will be glad to welcome the King to their entries !!
Drum roll here … Wow! What an elegant design, Brian. I wouldn’t necessarily consider Calypso Coral and Pool Party to be “elegant colors” but adding the swallowtail butterfly stamped in StazOn and the black matting DOES make this design SO ELEGANT!
And I’d better mention the one corner-punched section which is a simple, but “just enough” addition to the design to put the card over the top!

Wow, this is an awesome card Brian, and a winner if you were to ask me! I love what you did with the butterfly, stamping in alternating colors of DSP. What a fabulous effect. Sorry it took you a smack in the head to realize it! And how is it that I don’t have either of these stamps? Hmm, must remedy that situation 🙂

Oh my goodness!! how fabulous!!! and I remember some not so good comments about this gorgeous stamp when if first came out!!! I think it’s all about the way you display it’s beauty, either whole or in parts. At first I also thought that, even if it’s beautiful, it was to big but I’ve seen it in so many projects where they use just sections of it and I truly love it. Each part of this butterfly is amazing, so detailed so you can’t go wrong with it, no matter how you present it.
You did an amazing job with this stamp in this card, so sorry if it took a smack in the head to come up with the right combination of colors, I think you’ll agree that the pain was well worth it. I hope the pain is gone by now.
