Above & Beyond with Help from the Chevron Border Punch

Happy Friday, my friend! Today I am sharing another card I made for my display board at Covention. My presentation topic – Masculine Cards. My opinion – go ahead and add color.

I have a lot of things to say about this card, and I know you are excited to read every single word I have to say about it. But first, I want to share the card – it will make the discussion so much more meaningful. I’m adding this sentence just to see if you are still reading – if you didn’t read this, then good for you! Can you believe all those people who missed this meaty content just to rudely skip ahead? Anyway, here’s my card:Around the World, One in a Million, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Build a Bigger Chevron. When I first received the Chevron Border Punch, I played around with cool ways to punch holes in different pieces of paper. I quickly learned (and I wasn’t the first to figure this out) that the pieces that are punched out can be used for something, too. In fact, I think the pieces are far more interesting than the holes that are created with the punch. Always an inquistive one, I started laying out the pieces and lining them all up. To create this pattern, I lined up the pieces tip-to-tip, alternating direction. To “cover up” the places where the ends of each of the chevrons meets, I added twine horizontally around the card. It makes the entire pattern appear to be seamless.
  • Vintage Expression. Does this pattern remind you of anything? This past Spring, I fell in love with the Sent with Love bundle – a gorgeous, travel-themed Designer Series Paper and coordinating stamp set. Remember it? I built this chevron to resemble the one used in that DSP. Even my color choices were lifted from that Designer Series Paper. The overall look of my card is similar (same colors and patterns), but there’s not a piece of Sent with Love in this updated card. To see the other card I made with that paper, click here.
  • Envelope Liners. I really like the look of a completed project. Why would you ever just slap a gorgeous card inside a dull and boring envelope? I love the new Envelope Liners Framelits that are included in the Holiday Catalog. What a wonderful way to coordinate your card with its vessel! If you haven’t checked them out, please do. They are simply amazing. Don’t you think these two make a perfect pair?Around the World, One in a Million, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

  2. How clever to use the punched Chevron pieces to build up this cool border!! I love the colors too and the Baker’s Twine, great addition to the design.

  3. clever use for that punch – nice card .

A seamlessly perfect pair and awesome with the quadruple mega chevron!!! Sent with Love DSP is the first thing I thought of when I saw your card Brian!! I LOVE that DSP & I made & sent many cards with love for Valentine’s Day earlier this year. Your sentiment & the cute little airplane also compliment each other perfectly!! 🙂

  5. Well, it looks like they were all meant to work together ….even the twine could be the Jet Stream currents …..and look how the chevron indicates movement and going forward . Outstanding ! And who wouldn`t love that cute plane ? A really good example of using your supplies and getting your money`s worth from them. You are so smart and creative !!

  6. Just another example how you go ‘above & beyond’ in your creations. You keep taking us higher and higher each and every day. I love it!

  7. Creative and funny blog! Thanks Brian!

  8. This is fabulous!! Great tip using the twine to hide the seams! Guess maybe I do need that punch….

  9. Ditto, Brian, what everyone else before me said! Great card! and a perfect way to cover the pattern seams. The twine doesn’t look “added” – it fits perfectly into your overall design. Thanks for sharing a terrific way to use these little pieces.

  10. Brian so nice , love it !!!!

  11. I have a very dear friend (I was his secretary for many years) who was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago. He was a pilot as well as a salesman and this is the absolute perfect card for him. He used to tell me I always went “above and Beyond” in my job performance. Because of the cancer they will take his pilots license I’m sure. I feel as though this post was “meant for me” as I have been sending him cards of encouragement and this one would be absolutely perfect. Thank you Brian. See you never know what effect one of your cards will make. Isn’t that a joyful thing!

  12. Tre’ Magnifique’, Brian!!! Bravo!!

  13. Love your work, Brian…so glad the girls who came back from Convention recommended that I follow your blog.

  14. Clever, clever. Love the chevron.

  15. I’m realizing I often use the word “clever” when replying to your posts. But I have to do it again. Are you tired of hearing it? Nah! But seriously, very clever use of the chevron punch-outs. Nice job again.

  16. Wow…..This one ROCKS, Brian. I normally ‘tune in’; but, don’t comment often. I had to on this one. Amazing and Brilliant. The colors are so awesome. The detail just screams WOW! The baker’s twine is so perfect. What a great added touch (to cover up or not). I love how you “paired up” with the envelope liner too. So very, very and very nicely done! Thank you for sharing with all of us!

  17. I want to know what sentence you thought we wouldn’t read…….spill those beans, B.
And BTW, that is a very clever use of the punch, like everyone else said! I have been working with World Map all day, and just read this post , and realized the plane is a perfect pair for World Map. Ha! Now I need that!
    Happy Friday!

  18. As always, I love the card and the creativity behind it. It was simply marvelous. I’m adding this sentence just to see if you are still reading my reply (again, a laugh out loud moment for me)! Thank you for bringing some light to a dull day.
Hugs from Wisconsin and have a great weekend.

  19. Very nice card, sir! I like checking your blog- you have some very clever designs! I’m curious about the tiny airplane…. I live in Alaska and we “fly out” almost every time we take a vacation……I could make lots of Bon Voyage cards with that little guy! I got the envelope liner dies….I love them too!!!

  20. Another fab card and funny post, I do enjoy my daily dose of Brian lol!
I am only just getting into stampin up products properly and I had no idea this was made using punch ‘waste’, I thought you were showcasing a new die! I love the twine, im having a small addiction to it right now and it so looks like it was meant to be there not just to hide the seams, very clever! Ni. 🙂

  21. Brian, I enjoyed your demo booth at convention but wasn’t able to get close enough to really hear or see your presentation on demo night but was very happy that your card samples remained posted as I went back later and got some great pics of them. Found your blog when someone posted a pinterest link for the chevron punch but found much more than I bargained for! Perhaps a favorite new blog to check out? And I thought the post was as good as the pic!
