Get Well Wishes for Shelli and FMS101

Shelli Gardner, Co-Founder and CEO of Stampin’ Up!, was injured in a horseback riding accident on Wednesday last week.  When the horse she was riding stumbled, Shelli was thrown.  She fractured her wrist, pelvis and collarbone.  While her daughter, Sara, says Shelli is in a lot of pain, she says her mother is maintaining a positive outlook and will recover well.  I chose this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge (FMS101) as the foundation for my Get Well Soon card to Shelli.  Here’s my card:Everything Eleanor, Express Yourself, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

And here’s this week’s FMS challenge banner – a sketch by the very talented Linda Callahan. I met Linda in January at Stampin’ Up!’s Leadership Conference in Orlando, and I adore her sarcastic wit.  Here’s Linda’s sketch that inspired my card:

More about Shelli and then a bit about my card.  As you may remember from my earlier posts, Shelli and I have a really long history.  I met Shelli at Stampin’ Up!’s Convention in July.  This is a picture from [what looks like] our wedding, but please know that we only squeezed hands, hugged and then performed a ballroom dance routine for twenty-three minutes in front of a crowd of 6,000 demonstrators.  Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Shelli Gardner

Shelli is a pretty big deal – she co-founded Stampin’ Up! – so you can probably guess I made multiple versions of this card – this is number three.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Making Color Choices.  There are several ways to choose colors for a card – you can flip through all the colors and pair them up.  You can select them from The Color Coach.  You can “steal” the colors from a combination of colors that appeals to you.  I pulled these colors right out of a piece of Soho Subway Designer Series Paper.  Early Espresso, Crisp Cantaloupe and Very Vanilla are listed in the DSP, but I added Sahara Sand all on my own.
  • Border the Boutique Detail.  I like these little In Color Boutique Detail embellishments, but I think (and this just might be my opinion) they look strange if just placed on a card.  Since they can’t be adorned with twine or ribbon, I think they need to be somehow framed.  I framed this embellishment with a 3/4″ Circle punch of Very Vanilla card stock.  In a card I posted this past week, I framed the embellishment with a punch from Boho Blossoms (click here to check it out).
  • Core’dinations.  Just another shout-out for Core’dinations card stock.  I love this stuff.  Cut.  Emboss.  Sand.  Enjoy.  It’s as simple as that.  I especially love the paper when paired with this embossing folder.  I really like the distressed look it gives – but it can still be clean and classy.

Stamp Sets:  Everything Eleanor, Express Yourself (Hostess)  Inks:  Early Espresso  Papers:  Early Espresso, Sahara Sand, Very Vanilla, 2013-2015 In Color Core’dinations Cardstock  Accessories:  3/4″ Circle punch, Beautifully Baroque Textured Embossing Folder, 2013-2015 In Color Boutique Details, Apothecary Accents Framelits

  7. Wonderful colors and card. I just have a question please. I have everything Eleanor and can see it from the larger embellishment but how did you make the smaller one on top of it? Thank you and I appreciate your time.

    • Thanks, Angela! I cropped that shape with the Apothecary Accents Framelits. Forgot to put that on my supplies list but have now added it. Thanks!

      • love this card too brian, but i’m confused. isn’t the darker piece cut out with the apothecary accents framelits? it’s the ligher piece (sahara sand i think) on top of the early espresso that i’m confused about. it’s the same shape but smaller. am i just not getting it? are there 2 sizes of that shape in the framelit set? thanks!

        • Thanks, Jeanine. The smaller shape is cropped with the Apothecary Accents framelit. The larger is stamped with Everything Eleanor and cut with paper snips. There is only one size of this shape in the framelits – the smaller. I hope that helps.

  20. Whoa – poor Shelli, it pained me to even read about her injuries! Hopefully she will get enough cards to fill boxes and boxes which I’m sure she will. They should take her mind off the pain and fill her with joy that so many care about her and are thinking of her. Nice job Brian and thanks for the info.

  30. This is lovely. You might have finally talked me into getting the co-ordination paper. I have the baroque embossing folder but haven’t been successful one using it. It was missing something. I guess now I know what that was. : )

  36. How did you get the 2 layers on this card with the apothecary die set. Love the card.
    Sheri

    • Hi Sheri – I cropped one with the die. The other is a stamped image that I cut out with Paper Snips. A little tedious, but the overall effect was exactly what I wanted.
