Happy Birthday Joe for Justin

What do you love most about card making?  I love to make a card that I think is beautiful, but I REALLY love to make a card that is custom designed for someone else.  That makes a card really special.  As you know, yesterday was Justin’s birthday.  Because of my commitment to The Pals Paper Arts team, I couldn’t post his card yesterday, so I’m sharing it with you a day after his special day.  I’m going to share the card and then explain why I designed the card the way I did.  🙂  I’m also going to share some great ideas for packaging a card.  Here’s his card:Perfect Blend, Bring on the Cake,ABC-123 Alphabet & Numbers,Stampin' Up!, Brian King

The Design

  • Coffee Cups on a Birthday Card?  If you have ever met Justin, then you know the boy drinks coffee non-stop.  He can hunt down a Starbucks like a hound dog on a mission.  “Sniff!  Sniff!  That way!”  During the four or five days I spent with him at Convention, I can’t think of a time when he didn’t have a cup in his hand.  I can’t say I’ve seen any other “happy birthday” cards with this coffee cup, but it’s perfect for Justin.  I stamped the cups on several pieces of Designer Series Paper, Crumb Cake card stock and Whisper White card stock.  Snip, snip, snip, glue, glue, glue, done.
  • Soho Subway.  Justin is a New Yorker.  Could there be a more perfect Designer Series Paper for him than Soho Subway?  Forget the amazing images and really masculine colors – the page of numbers is a perfect birthday image.  Love it!
  • Letter it!  The five cups are adorned with HAPPY from ABC-123 Outline Alphabet & Number and ABC-123 Sketch Alphabet & Numbers.  Look how perfectly they pair with the birthday greeting from Bring on the Cake.  I was happy to figure out this combination.  Perfect Blend, Bring on the Cake,ABC-123 Alphabet & Numbers,Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Packaging the Card to Make it Special

  • The Envelope.  Thanks to the Envelope Punch Board, I was able to easily crank out an envelope for Justin’s special card using the paper that’s featured in his card.
  • Attaching the Greeting.  I hand-scripted Justin’s name on a piece of Very Vanilla and attached it with a couple of strips of Epic Day Washi Tape.  I thought it was a unique way to decorate the front of the envelope.  I mailed the card and envelope in a post office mailer (I don’t think the USPS would know what to do with a card that just says “Justin”).Perfect Blend, Bring on the Cake,ABC-123 Alphabet & Numbers,Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Stamp sets:  Perfect Blend, ABC-123 Outline Alphabet & Numbers, ABC-123 Sketch Alphabet & Numbers, Bring on the Cake  Inks:  Early Espresso, Summer Starfruit, Stampin’ Write Marker (Early Espress)  Papers:  Summer Starfruit, Early Espresso, Very Vanilla, Crumb Cake, Whisper White, Soho Subway Designer Series Paper  Accessories:  Stampin’ Dimensionals, Epic Day Washi Tape

  1. Great minds, Brian. I also used the same coffee cup stamps and Soho Subway dsp on the card I made him. LOL! Just perfect for him.

  3. What a great card you made, like the whole look of it.
Here in Holland we had the Coffee Top 100, were 100 hospitalaty businesses of all kind were tested on their coffee. The Barista’s of the Village in the town of Utrecht won 1st prize and I was thinking about a card to sent them. In my mind beans, coffee splashes etc. popped up…..but you just showed a great idea here too I might snatch a bit of Brain ;o)

  4. Great idea and so cute ! I am sure he loves it . Truly original …. Did you give him a Starbuck`s Gift Card to go with it ? Just wondering ?

  5. I love everything about this card Brian and the awesome way you personalized for Justin, I bet he absolutely loved it!!. Your paper snipping qualities never cease to amaze me. Thank you for sharing this fabulous card for your coffee fanatic friend.

Wow Brian, this card could not be more perfect for Justin!!! I LOVE what you did with the sleek Soho cups and the custom sentiment!!! This card is AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!! 🙂

  7. When looking through the big SU catalog (which is quite often) I stop and look at this stamp set. It appeals to me but how much would I really use it? So I pass it up. With your reveal of Justin’s birthday card, which is simply WOW, you give me that thought again to ponder about purchasing it. With the combination of stamp sets and the Soho DSP, this card ROCKS! Would of been great to see Justin’s face upon opening this gem.

  8. Awesome card!

  9. That card is way too cool! Great job, Brian!

  10. I love it! What a perfect card for our coffee loving friend!

  11. PERFECT! Need I say more? I’m going to use this for my son’s bd card, he’s also a coffee hound. TFS.

  12. Another great idea and card, Brian! And HBD to Justin ( a little late).

  13. Holy Coffee Cups, Brian!!! This is AWESOME! And your snipping abilities always inspire me! You really “nailed” this birthday card for Justin, Brian.

  14. Yes, a great card. We love coffee around here. I could probably make a dozen of them, but that would be a lot of snipping! Ha. ha. Maybe just one for my Uncle’s 85th. He will love it! Thanks a bunch. 🙂

  15. Brian – you are such a good friend! I’m sure Justin absolutely loved this card and, since it was especially designed with his love for coffee in mind, I know it will be special to him for a long time. If Justin lives in Manhattan I swear there are 3 Starbucks on every block! When I am in Manhattan with my daughters we make a game out of counting how many Starbucks we pass from Grand Central to wherever it is we are headed that particular day.

    • They must be all next to Sephora’s! I’ve never bought so much makeup in one day in different stores as when I’m in NYC.
      Awesome card, Brian!

  16. Nice card Brian! I LOVE the use of several different products for one project. I think when I do that I tend to overwhelm people, I’m so happy you do it too!!! be well –

  17. This is my favorite new stamp set! Thanks for a great idea and yes….that envelope punch board makes all cards and envelopes possible. Great card!

  18. I, too, love making or receiving a card that says the sender really knows the receiver, and the sender has taken time to think about what the receiver would know that he/she was important. I’m not a coffee drinker, but a diet soda can or Starburst candy card would fit for me!

  19. What a clever creation!

  20. Not only is your card wildly creative and imaginative, but I also feel as though I know Justin, and I know how much you like having him as a friend because of all the steps you took in making his card. How wonderful!
