Double Duty with Friendship Preserves

I don’t often double-up on card challenges by combining the elements of one challenge with the elements of another.  I prefer to design each card especially for a specific challenge – AND since I post every day, this practice helps me to stretch things out so I can fill my seven days.  🙂  I couldn’t resist on this one, though.  As I was working on my ideas for the Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge, my card naturally morphed into a card that works with this week’s sketch from Freshly Made Sketches.  I made a couple of tiny changes to the layout, and I ended up with a card that works for both challenges.  Yippee!  So, there you have it.  And now I will let you see my card:Friendship Preserves, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA174, FMS106

Here’s the color combination for The Pals Paper Arts:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Make Each Card a Challenge.  When I sat down to make a card for the PPA Color Challenge, I issued my own personal challenge – I decided I would use a stamp image I have never used.  My fingers ran up and down my stamp sets, looking for that perfect image, and just seemed to just stop on Friendship Preserves.  Errrrrt!  The set seemed perfect for this color combination.  I didn’t realize at the time that the shapes would work perfectly with the FMS challenge.
  • Fun Layering.  You’ve noticed I use a lot of layers in my cards, right?  I just love the look of paper that’s perfectly placed over top of more paper.  I created my band across the center of the card to coordinate with the brown band on the image.  My Circle Collection Framelits allowed me to create a wonderful background for the Friendship Preserves image cropped from the Window Frames Framelits.  I then layered the circles by adding one above the band and one below the band.  This not only adds interest to the layers, but it allows me to minimize the boldness of the Pumpkin Pie paper in the design.
  • Saving Paper.  Once I cropped my background piece of Pumpkin Pie, I knew I would be covering most of it with a piece of paper from my Designer Series Paper Stack.  I cropped my circle from that piece to save a little paper.Save paper by cropping from the background panel, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Yum is right!! I’ll have a piece of pumpkin bread with some pear jelly on the side and baked brown sugar on top!! 🙂 Lovely layers Brian and the circles compliment the polka dots very nicely!!

  5. I agree with Vicki, the color combo has a retro feel to it! Love the card, I haven’t used that set in a while, might be time to dust it off! Have a great day!! 🙂

  6. The “King” is in the house! Thanks for playing with PPA challenge this week and as always….great – clean and simple card! I am with you that I have not used this stamp set much but now…the “king” has paved the way to inspire me! Enjoy your day! Hugs!

  8. Hi Brian, your card is so nice; clean and simple. I can’t wait to upload my first challenge card! So excited 🙂 The PPA Team’s cards are very inspiring!

  9. Very nice card, very adaptable. Thanks a bunch. 🙂

  10. I really like the polka dot DSP, great tip on how to save some paper. Your card is beautiful, CAS too, I like how you centered the sentiment and added that band of layered CS to really make it pop. I love the way you add layers to your cards Brian, this is an area that I struggle with all the time so, thank you for sharing and teaching.

  11. So clean and crisp! Love your paper saving tip! Great take on these colors!

  12. Positively, absolutely love the card Brian. I know I’m getting old but you’re playing with my brain right? I looked and looked and cannot figure out where you used the white embossing powder. I do love how you always have so many layers to your cards. I don’t know why I don’t layer more than I do, it makes such a dramatic difference in the final card. Have a Terrific Thursday!

    • Grace, The sentiment on the front of the card is embossed with White Embossing Powder – once on Pear Pizzazz paper, once on Baked Brown Sugar paper. I snipped the brown part and layered it on the green.

      • Well DUH for me! Thanks Brian, of course once you pointed it out it was easy to see. Geez, I must have still been half asleep. LOL

  13. Nice fall colors. I can see this card paired up with a pumpkin pie….Yum. Another card keeper. Great paper saving tip.

  14. I love this color combo, and your layering is always just right. I have this stamp set, and you’ve inspired me to get it out again. TFS!

  15. pretty, love the colour combo!

  16. Very pretty and love those Fall colors. And again, very hungry after reading your post. LOL
Question (and I hope it’s not a too dumb one): for saving paper, could you also have cropped the circle in the polka dot DSP to show the full pumpkin pie underneath, or would this have removed a layer thus giving it a different look I guess? just wondering. Tx.

    • I actually thought to do that, but I find that a negative crop will leave rings around the edges when my cutting plates are nearing their demise. They are nearing their demise, so… Also, wanted to make sure the circle was exactly where it needed to be behind the white circle, so I glued that down before adding it all to the base of the card. I hope that’s helpful.

  17. Scrumptious card, Brian! I love all your layers. Thanks for joining Design Team 1 this week!

  18. I oftentimes punch an embellishment from the panel on a card that will be covered up anyway….good to see that others do this. My momma always said “waste not, want not” Love all of your cards……..

  19. Brian this is such a gorgeous and clean card! You’ve used the colours perfectly with this weeks sketch at FMS! Thanks for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches this week!
