We Three Trees

I’m trying out a new sketch challenge today because it fits so well with an idea I was already percolating in this always-crafting brain of mine.  When Justin shared his card from The Paper Craft Crew this week, I knew it would give me the motivation to complete this card I’d been thinking about for a while.  I’ll share the card and then talk about its components.  Here’s my card:More Merry Messages, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PCCCS#63

And here’s the Paper Craft Crew sketch that inspired it:Card Sketch #63Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Those adorable trees.  Do you recognize these adorable trees?  You might be scratching your head and saying, “Brian, where did you get these trees?  Have you created a card with non-Stampin’ Up! items?”  Absolutely not!  I purchased the Season of Style This & That Designer Stickers to accompany my Season of Style This & That Journal.  These three trees are stickers in this kit, along with a bunch of other holiday-themed designs.  I stuck them on a piece of Whisper White card stock, punched them with a circle punch and layered some additional pieces underneath.  I stuck down the trees before punching so that I can make sure they are perfectly aligned – once the tree is stuck down, it’s stuck.  No second chances.Season Of Style This And That Designer Stickers
  • Color balance.  Yesterday I talked about not gluing things down until everything’s done.  Here’s a great example of why that’s important.  I originally laid out Cherry Cobbler, followed by Crumb Cake and then Old Olive.  Once I had my Cherry Cobbler button placed on the baker’s twine, I knew I needed to balance the red a bit better.  Doing the old switcheroo by moving Old Olive to the left and Cherry Cobbler to the right achieved the balance I needed – not too much of one color in one place.
  • Card size.  Once I had my punches determined, the card didn’t look right as a standard size.  I played around with different shapes and determined that a 4″x6″ card front worked best.  In “olden times” we’d be stuck with a card and no envelope to stick it in.  With the new handy-dandy Envelope Punch Board, though, we have tools we need to tuck that card away in a beautiful envelope.  Thank you, Envelope Punch Board, for allowing me to make cards in almost every size possible.
