Three Things I Like: Holiday One-for-One Swap by Paulette Berkbigler

The Holiday One-for-One Swaps were mailed out earlier this week, and you should have begun to receive your swaps by now.  Do you have yours?  Because many of you have not yet received yours, I don’t want to share another panel of cards.  Instead, I want to focus on one of my favorites from the collection of swap.  Don’t get me wrong – they were all wonderful, but this card by Paulette Birkbigler is just stunning.  Here’s her card, followed by three things I like about it:

Three Things I Like about Paulette’s Card:

  • Winter’s Frost Specialty Designer Series Paper.  When the Holiday Catalog was released earlier this year, I proclaimed the Winters’s Frost Specialty Designer Series Paper as one of my favorites.  While I have showcased this gorgeous paper in several instances, I have never been able to effectively make a card I like with this piece of paper.  I love the colors and design, but I’ve never been happy with the results.  I love, love, love how Paulette uses the paper here, and that makes me so happy.
  • Embossed Vellum.  Embossing on vellum can be really tricky.  While the results are really beautiful, it’s been my experience that the vellum easily warps.  Paulette has the magical touch, though, because both the Christmas tree and the sentiment are perfectly embossed, and the paper is not warped.  What’s your secret, Paulette?
  • Gorgeous Color Balance.  The selected Specialty Designer Series Paper is white with hints of Smoky Slate and Coastal Cabana.  Paulette features the Coastal Cabana perfectly in the small frame around the card front and the thicker oval frame around the tree.  Great choice!  She also repeats the pattern of the DSP on the inside of the envelope, a perfect companion to the card.

Stamp Sets:  Lovely as a Tree, Greetings of the Season  Papers:  Smoky Slate, Coastal Cabana, Winter’s Frost Specialty Designer Series Paper, Vellum Cardstock  Accessories:  Ovals Collection Framelits, Silver Stampin’ Emboss Powder

I’ll be sharing the other cards over the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got a couple more “Three Things I Like” cards to feature.  I know you haven’t seen all of the other cards, but don’t you agree that this one is quite stunning?  Please let Paulette know how much you love her card in the comments below.

  1. Very striking Paulette! I like the use of Smoky Slate in your card stock and envelope, so handsome with this little bit of Coastal Cabana and who can resist touching the embossed tree! A masterpiece!

  2. Absolutely lovely!! So classy. Excellent Paulette

  3. Beautiful card, Paulette. I thought I would have to use hexagons with this paper, but your use of the oval framelit is perfect. NB

  4. YES, this is so perfectly elegant! If you see an unknown number on your phone, it’s probably Hallmark calling to ask you to design for them. :o)

  5. Oh it`s just beautiful ! The dsp is lovely but, like Brian said it`s kind of hard to find a place it fits . You did it just perfectly . Thank you for the idea ! And that stunning embossed tree … on vellum !
Wish this card was headed my way …. ! Too bad they are already mailed out …maybe I could have bribed Brian !

  6. Beautiful card, Paulette. Do you have a blog too? 🙂

  7. Oh my goodness Paulette, such a wonderful card! Your embossed tree just pops. I have never used vellum on my cards, it adds such an elegant look. How did you attach your sentiment to your ribbon? Glue dots? I know it’s tricky so you don’t see the adhesive. Also, Lovely As A Tree, such a classic set. Hope it never goes away. I know I will keep mine forever.

  8. Your card is beautiful Paulette!

  9. Such an elegant card Paulette! I feel a CASE coming on (what is your secret for embossing vellum?)

  10. Just stunning, Paulette! And, as Broan commented, your embossing on the vellum is perfectly done! Thank you so much!

  11. Oh, I love heat embossed Vellum, it’s so soft and beautiful to look at. Paulette, your card is wonderful and elegant and this DSP looks just perfect the way you used it to showcase the beautifully embossed tree. Thank you for sharing, some lucky person will get this in the mail box soon.

  12. Brian, thank you for sharing Paulette’s beautiful card with us! I agree, I love this patterned paper, but out of the stack have yet to find the right use for it… until now 🙂 I agree with Elisha, a CASE is on it’s way!

Paulette, I love how you cut out the ovals from the front of the card and laid the embossed vellum behind the hollowed out oval; what a neat touch!

  13. Beautiful card, Paulette. Yes, please share your embossing on vellum secrets with us! I will check back later today to see what you write!

  14. I am speechless…and that’s a huge thing in itself! Paulette, your card is stunning! I am always afraid to use vellum because I don’t know much about it, but you have show cased it so beautifully. I love how vellum looks and that beautiful tree and sentiment are perfect! Lovely as a tree is still my most favorite set and your tree looks so elegant. Please share your recipe for this card and what the trick is for using vellum and embossing, and yes, adhering it without the glue showing. Beautiful work and Brian, thank you for sharing it with us!

  15. Beautiful card!!!

  16. WOW – that’s all I can say about Paulette’s card! WOW and WOW and WOW!

  17. Thank you so much for all your kind comments — I really appreciate them! SU’s vellum card stock is great to work with — that, plus using the Embossing Buddy & keeping the heat tool constantly moving (& at least an inch above the image) — these steps seemed to keep the vellum from warping too much. I tried glue dots & sticky strip behind the sentiment but everything seemed to show — finally I used a fine line of Tombow liquid adhesive along the script and “curlicues” of the word “Peace” & that worked! I can’t wait to see all the other cards that were made and to receive one of them in the mail — makes that daily trip to the mailbox much more exciting!

  18. Your card is stunning! I, too, am awaiting the reveal of your secrets!

  19. Stunning is exactly the right word to describe this card. So beautiful, well balanced and very WOW, but not over-powering at the same time. It has a certain quietness to it. Love it!

  20. Laurie Burns Gachewicz

Absolutely stunningly gorgeous Paulette!! Thank you for spotlighting this amazing card Brian!!! 🙂

  21. Lovely. I am becoming more and more intrigued to do heat embossing. I have dabbled but not used it much. I think inspiration like yours will get me there.

  22. Awesome card Paulette. Love your colors and design. Thanks for yor response on embossing on vellum, very helpful hints and glue hints as well. Yippee Skippee!
So excited I just received my swap tonight, can’t wait to see Leah’s card so I can comment on it, wahoo!

  23. Oh, so pretty, Paulette! You’re Awesome…just like Brian!!!!
