Celebrating Grace’s Birthday with a PPA Sketch

I’ve made a couple of fun projects with washi tape, but I wouldn’t say I am “gaga for washi.”  I like it, but I don’t love it like some people love it.  One of my most loyal and wonderful customers, Grace, is also not gaga for washi.  Grace, who lives in Maine, is celebrating her birthday today!  When I sat down this past weekend to make a birthday card for Grace (and to simultaneously complete this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch), I just couldn’t stay away from Retro Fresh Designer Washi Tape.  I couldn’t love these colors more, and I created my own pattern with several layers of the tape.  Here’s my card:

And here’s Margaret Moody’s sketch that inspired my birthday card for Grace:Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Honoring a sketch without following it to a “t”.  I love a good sketch.  They really give a great foundation for a card – a good start when you don’t really know where else to start.  While the sketch above has five bold, diagonal stripes, my card has seven.  It’s not the exact same as the sketch, but it’s certainly a healthy nod.  The off-center card panel was really hard for me – I so wanted to center the panel on the card front.  Following the sketch here, though, really adds a level of interest to my card that would have, otherwise, not been there.
  • Layering the washi tape.  I really had a lot of fun playing around with this washi tape.  While the washi tape pattern (which consists of beautiful, simple stripes) is beautiful by itself, I poked around with it to create a different look that I also like.  Here’s what I did:  I taped down one strip of tape and then layered another strip about half way across (width-wise) nad then another.

  • Popping the color in all the right places.  The colors in this tape (and card) are Tangerine Tango, Baked Brown Sugar, Coastal Cabana and So Saffron.  While most of the card is in the darker tones (that have such a retro look to them), I made sure to border “YOU!” with Tangerine Tango (to be consistent with the other borders) and then pop it out with a scallop circle of the bright and cheery Coastal Cabana.  Bonus tip:  I used a Stampin’ Write Marker to color “You!” from Remembering Your Birthday.  The tip:  make sure your stamp is very, very clean before markering and huffing your stamp.  In the first version of this, the entire rest of the image shown in a light brown.  No good!

Stamp sets:  Remembering Your Birthday  Papers:  Baked Brown Sugar, Tangerine Tango, Coastal Cabana, Very Vanilla  Inks:  Tangerine Tango, Stampin’ Write Marker (Tangerine Tango)  Accessories:  RetroFresh Designer Washi Tape, 1-1/4″ Circle punch, 1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-3/4″ Circle punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I can already hear you all clambering to your keyboard to tell me how much you love this card.  🙂  How sweet of you!  I hope you’ll also take the opportunity to wish Grace a happy birthday!

Thanks for stopping by today!

  6. Oh WOW!! you can’t help but love this sketch, the eye goes right to the fabulously placed Washi tape. Love the colors and, for someone who is not “gaga over washi tape” you did a magnificent job using it on this card. Happy Birthday Grace, you lucky girl you!!! getting a BK original!!

  7. A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRACE! Enjoy this spectacular creation. I am guilty of having a box of washi tape and also guilty of not using it as much as I should. With the overlapping of the tape it makes the wonderful colors stronger against the white background. ENJOY

  10. Happy, happy Bithday, Grace! Lovely card, Brian! I do love Washi Tape but don’t use it as much as I should. I do love what you’ve done with it using it for the diagonals in the sketch! I agree with you about these colors too, they’re awesome. Thanks for joining DT 1 this week!

  11. Cute card. Happy Birthday Grace. My niece in Maine has 19″ of snow. Hope you aren’t snowed in for your birthday. Now about the Washi tape, I was very skeptical, but what the heck, it was just $5.00. I really enjoyed the fact you can make a really quick card (unlike Brian here 🙂 ) I searched for ideas, made a few cards and was bitten. I now have a nice collection of tape and enjoy the speed and ease washi tape offers. Looking forward to seeing other ideas from “the King” on how to use the tape.

  12. Great look Brian! Happy Birthday Grace!

  17. Oh Brian – you are sooooooooooo sweet and what a fabulous card. How did you ever get the stripes to match so perfectly on the horizontal? I will treasure this card. Thank you everyone for your birthday wishes and yes Leah, we have plenty of snow here in Maine with more forecast for the weekend. Looks like it’s going to be a really, really, really white Christmas. Thanks again Brian.

  21. Happy Birthday, Grace! Enjoy the washi tape card from Brian (Of course you will!). Love the stripes and the colors…another idea to try. Looks like we had our snow and now we will have rain and more rain; don’t know which is worse — 8 inches of snow or 4 inches of rain torrents. Nancy B
