Make a Wish: Masculine Birthday Card

You know I like to set goals, right?  Well, I had two goals when I set out to make today’s card – I wanted to make a masculine card (I had a ten year-old in mind, but this card can work well for almost any age), and I wanted to make something fun with Stampin’ Up!’s new Triangle punch.  Here’s my card:

Perfect Pennants, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

    • Triangle Punch Border.  The Occasion Catalog introduces a new Triangle punch that coordinates with the Geometrical Stamp Set.  While I don’t yet have the stamp set (I’ll be getting it at Leadership this week), I ordered the punch in my December preorder.  I wanted to use the punch to create a cool border.  After playing around with the shapes on my desk for a while, I decided these bands (made up entirely of triangles) would make for a sharp look that was easy to create.
    • Layering the Sentiment.  I wanted the sentiment to be the focal point of this card, so I needed to repeat the three colors in the sentiment – but I also needed to keep the layering clean.  There are lots of layers here (don’t get me wrong), but I think they all work well together to create a clean look.  The layers are composed of the following (starting from the outside and working in):  Midnight Muse Deco Labels Framelit, Summer Starfruit Circles Collection Framelit, Gumball Green 2-1/2″ Circle punch, Whisper White Circles Collection Framelit.  The Midnight Muse and Gumball Green layers are popped up with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

    • Color Choices.  This color combination was almost a no-brainer for me.  Midnight Muse, Summer Starfruit and Gumball Green (all 2012-2014 In Colors) are a go-to for masculine cards.  These colors can easily be dressed up or made casual – either way, they always look go together.

  1. Brian this is awesome! Keep up the great work – so inspiring!

  2. Nice one Brian – very nice 🙂

  3. Brian, I actually said “Oh Wow” out loud when I saw your card this AM! Of course the color pallet is GREAT for a masculine card, but the triangle punched background is what did it for me! Awesome use of the new punch! I “pinned” your card BEFORE I commented if you didn’t already believe how much I like this card 🙂

  4. I like the layering for the sentiment . I would not have thought of using MM circle on MM Decorative Label . Same /same …but, I like that . As far as the Triangle Punch …not for me but, I like what you did with your Geometric mind ! Colors are great …this card design has a multitude of event choices ! Super !

  5. Really like this. I love punches so was looking at the triangle one and wondering how I could use it, now I know – thanks!

  6. Brian – another “out of the ballpark” card this morning. The colors are so joyful and fun. I love the way you reversed the color placement on each side with those triangles. I spied that triangle punch right away in the new catalog. I think that is going to end up being one of my favorite punches – the reason – HST’s! HST’s are half square triangles and many, many quilt patterns are made from them. I’m thinking note card sets for all my quilting friends using the triangle punch to make half square triangles into quilt patterns on the cards. Yippee!

  7. Great card! I love visiting your site because I like your card style, but I also appreciate the male point of view on cards. This has wonderful bright colors and I tend to go earth tones for masculine cards. Thanks Brian!

  8. Good looking card: clean and bright. Thanks!

  9. See you at leadership! Hopefully warmer there!!

First thing that came to my mind was a Court Jester costume! Great masculine card Brian. Love it.

  11. These are my favorite colors to combine. I have a mother’s ring with my 3 kids’ birthstones (November, May, September) with those gemstones. I’m always drawn to card s with that combo. I’ll have to CASE it>

  12. Great card Brian, I love how you used the triangle punch to create the border.

  13. When I look at this I see Mardi Gras. The colors and the triangles reminds of the costumes. I really like it. Hope you are surviving the deep freeze. Still sub zero temps in Ohio.

Woah Brian, totally tubular triangles!!! I’m not sure what is more amazingly AWESOME, the triangle pattern you created and perfectly pieced together, the 3 colors you chose, or you!!! Three cheers for all of the above!! 🙂 Did you pick up a degree in geometry somewhere along the way???!!! You really have an eye for transforming clean and simple shapes and patterns into stunning backgrounds or focal points!!!
