A Soft and Sweet Card for the Pals Paper Arts

Welcome to Thursday!  It’s time for a Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge, and Nicole Watt has created a layering of blocks that are a perfect beginning to any card.  With all its corners and straight lines, I challenged myself to make a soft and pretty card.  Let’s start with the sketch:PPA189_Jan_23

And here’s my take on the sketch – a clean and soft baby card:

Baby We've Grown, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA189

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Watercolored Bunny.  I’ve been playing around with this adorable bunny since the set arrived at my doorstep a couple of weeks ago.  Because I wanted the bunny to be appropriately soft, I didn’t want to paper-piece him or color him with markers.  I decided he needed to be lightly watercolored.  Mr. Bunny is stamped on watercolor paper and painted with a very light layer of Sahara Sand.  I incorporated the colors of the background pieces by adding Crisp Cantaloupe to his belly and feet and by adding Pistachio Pudding to his bow.  Bunnies really know how to coordinate with their environments.Baby We've Grown, Stampin' Up, Brian King, PPA189
  • A Ruffly Oval.  The punched watercolor paper is very thick, which gives me the sturdiness I need to add a ruffle behind it.  Let’s hear it for a ruffly oval!  I cut a piece of 3/8″ Ruffle Stretch Trim to wrap around the oval (overlapping just a bit), added a generous amount of Multipurpose Liquid Glue (white bottle, green lid) to the back side of the oval and then carefully wrapped the trim around, holding it at points to make sure it sets in the glue.  The trick – making sure the “meeting point” isn’t obvious.  With all the ruffles, that was easier than I thought.  Can you see where the ribbon starts and stops?
  • A Set of White Candy Dots.  I needed something to anchor the left side of the banner – there was just too much white space to the left of the bunny layer (is it OK with you if I just call it “the bunny layer”?  I hope so because I will use that term again later in this post).  With the white background and the white band, it needed something.  I couldn’t add Pistachio Pudding or Crisp Cantaloupe Candy Dots (because the candy dots aren’t available in the In Colors).  I decided to add three Whisper White Candy Dots to add a little texture without pulling too much focus on the card.  I’m happy (in this instance) that the In Color Candy Dots are not available.  🙂

  1. Brian this card is adorable. I love the departure from the typical blue and pink of baby cards.

Such a sweet card Brian!!! My favorite part is the Bunny layer !!! 🙂

  3. The soft colors of Crisp Cantaloupe and Pistachio Pudding are wonderful especially with you precious “bunny layer”. I cannot see where your ribbon connects … Good work there. As much as I would love the Candy Dots to come in the InColors, the WW Candy Dots were the perfect choice. You were “right on” about needing something there, but mainly texture! I love this card.

  4. This is a perfect baby card, so soft and cuddly. 🙂

  5. Who doesn’t love an adorable bunny baby card. The use of Sahara Sand on bunny and Pistachio Pudding on the tie brings it together very well. Just makes ya want to hug him or her. Like this card a lot.

  6. Sweet! I love the way it turned out. The ribbon is perfect!

  7. What a perfect card to see first thing this morning for two reasons! My first grandchild, a girl, will be coming into the world anytime this morning as my only child went to the hospital last night to be induced! I’m anxiously awaiting a phone call from my son-in-law!!

AND I love this card so much that I’m going to have to buy this stamp set now and replicate this card for her first Easter card (I’ve already bought her Easter gifts)! It is so perfect for a little one as it’s so soft in appearance as well as sweet! Plus I love the sentiment!

    Another GREAT card!! 🙂

  8. Awwww…so sweet . I like the White Candy Dots addition . This would be a fun sketch to try because of the layers . And I think this would be a cute Easter card . I give you an A for adorable !

  9. Oh, how super adorable is this card!!!!! Love it, love every single detail on it, this bunny is so darn cute and the color combination is amazing. I agree with Shannon, this colors are a fresh change from the traditional pink and blue, LOVE IT!!!!!
This stamp set is at the very top of my wish list for next month.

  10. Beautiful card…love the ribbon!

  11. What a sweet baby card! The ruffled ribbon around that cute bunny is the perfect touch.

  12. Yes,I concur…. Bunny Layer it is! Love that new addendum to you list of supplies, BTW.

  13. I have often been invited to baby showers where the couple has chosen not to know the sex of the baby in advance. That makes purchases for gifts a bit more challenging. This card is perfect for that occasion because it fits beautifully with the light green or yellow or orange that seems to be the only alternate to the pink and blue as far as newborn clothing goes. Also, there are so many soft yarns to knit baby sweaters and blankets with that absolutely match these colors. Great job Brian!

  14. This is such a precious baby card! Love this stamp set because it’s so perfect for babies, spring, easter, etc. The colors are so soft and warm! Perfect combo, Brian! Sweet!

  15. What an adorable card, so appropriate for new parents. I love how you added detail and texture with the ruffle trim, and candy dots. Great job

  16. If you wanted in color candy dots could you make them somehow? In color ink refill mixed with white ink refill or versamark refill, rub on candy dot then clear embossing powder? Or use the markers?

  17. Very soft and pretty! What an adorable bunny your water colored…great effect! And, just love the ruffle behind it! Great job, Brian!

  18. LOVE LOVE LOVE this baby card. I’ll be casing it…just sayin’. NO, I can not see where the ruffle trim starts and stops. I looked but can’t see it. It’s those kinds of details that make hand crafted items look their best.

  19. Brian, Beautiful card! Isn’t that the best bunny ever! Great choice of papers and colors.

What a beautiful card. I’m going to have to CASE this for my first great grandchild due next month. I believe your seam is about at the 11:30 area on the oval. Really hard to tell though. Can you color the dots with markers? Just wondering. I haven’t tried it, but I know you can do it with Sharpie’s.

  21. I love the bunny layer best too!!!

  22. Oh my gosh, this is DARLING!!!

  23. Brian, I love your card! The water coloring on the bunny is perfect! I ordered this stamp set after I saw your card! It is so soft and gives the feeling of cuddly! Thanks for the inspiration!
By the way, I live in Georgia, too! Would love to meet you!
    Claire

  24. I like this card very much. Had you really, really wanted Crisp Cantaloupe or Pistachio Pudding candy dots, I’m guessing your markers on the white dots would have done the trick. However, keeping them white does not detract from the bunny.

  25. I love this card, especially the cute bunny layer!
