Today’s project took some unexpected twists and turns to land on the project I am sharing with you. The inspiration for today’s card is a combination of two online challenges: a sketch from The Paper Players and a color combination by Dynamic Duos. Before I share my card, I want to thank Julie Gearinger for selecting my entry as last week’s Dynamo. What an honor to be selected from such a gorgeous collection of cards! Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Color Blocking. I love to work with solid panels of color. The three colors selected for this week’s “Triple Threat” allow for a beautiful color blocked card front. I selected the deepest color as the center (and thickest) panel. The other two panels tuck tightly against the center one.
- Circles, circles, circles. Following the sketch from The Paper Players, I cropped circles from each of the three panels. It took a lot of patience to crop out these circles and get them lined up exactly how I wanted them. My original plan was to simply crop out the circles and mount them against a white background. I was excited about the white space that would be left – until I looked at the picture of the “finished” card. Here’s my first attempt and second attempt, followed by a quick look at the final card. Think of this as an artistic representation of the evolution of my circles card:
- The redo. To get from the first stab to the final card, I cropped circles from the same punches. I glued down the white circles, fitting them right inside the cropped circles. I added dimension by popping up the two circles in the middle of the card and added a little texture with the smooth button.

Call me crazy, I like all of them. Using the tiny wave rotary blade on just one side adds a fun feature. That’s one product I do not have. Might be on my list in the future.
I agree with Lisa. I like all of these cards . I can use all of these ideas ! And I also noticed that addition of the small scallop border . I like it !

Thanks for all your kind comments. I really liked the “mechanics” of the first card. I impressed myself. 🙂 But I was bothered by the big, white circle in the middle of the card. I asked a couple of people for feedback (without telling them what bothered me), and they both said, “big, white circle no good”. Did I mention they were both cavemen? The “mechanics” got covered up a bit in the final card, but I do like that the signle sentiment is the focus of the final card. My eye is drawn directly there. 🙂

I really liked the first card as well but in all, I liked all three. Perhaps you could have somehow put a die cut/punched flower in that big white circle on the first one utilizing all three colors. Just a thought! 🙂 The last card I thought was both “graphic” and “retro”! Pretty Cool! 🙂

I love the geometrical aspect of this cards, all 3 are great. The colors look so nice together, really I couldn’t pick one. Awesome job, as always Brian.
Definitely like the bottom two, nice combo of colors and shapes. I love how you fit the sentiments into the circles. Hopefully you think this is sorta funny too, but the first one makes me think of a scrambled mixed up Mickey Mouse ears & face. 🙂
I really like this card, Brian. I love the stripes and circles that give it a nautical feel even without traditional nautical colors. Such a clever take on both the sketch and the color combo. It rocks!
