Miss You Already for Freshly Made Sketches

If I were forced to pick my favorite color combination (and who would really have to force me to pick one, anyway?), I’d have to say that it’s currently Real Red, Coastal Cabana and Whisper White.  So vibrant, so joyful, so beautiful.  When I saw the simple sketch from Freshly Made Sketches this week, I immediately knew I’d be playing around with this color combination.  Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Sketch within the Card.  While this sketch has a horizontal band across the bottom and a vertical band along the left, my card showcases the sketch on a panel on the card, rather than the card itself.  I have a tendency to center everything.  For some reason, though, with this card, I thought it might add a little interest to put the focal panel in the bottom, right corner of the card.  It still looks a little strange to me, but there’s something I like about it at the same time.
  • Nick Nack Patty Whack, Add a Little Ric Rac.  The Ric Rac was the inspiration for this card (the ric rac inspiration was inspired by Jen’s sketch – just to be clear).  I cropped these pieces from Tasteful Trim Bigz XL.  Just a note – the left side of the trim doesn’t tightly nestle inside the right side of the trim.  The cuts aren’t perfectly angled.  The little gaps are easily forgiven because the ric rac is so adorable.
  • Centering everything.  I already pointed out that the panel on this card is not centered on the card front (as if you couldn’t pick that out yourself – you are really very astute).  There’s lots of centering, though, on this uncentered panel – there are five ric rac strips with the Real Red one in the middle, and there are five wraps of White Baker’s Twine so that one strand is in the center.

  1. ❤️ this color combination, too! I did not see that you’d cut 5 Ric RAC strips until I’d read your description! Very nice texture-wise, too, I am sure. I’m still getting used to the way you chose to center it … you think outside the box leagues better than I do! And you don’t give a second thought to rotating the sketches, either. Thanks for that!

  2. Good morning sunshine and what a beautiful card you have made! I love these colors and the zig zags!

    Gorgeous!
Happy Sunday! And yes, I am on my first espresso.

I too am a fan of this color combination (thank you SU Fresh Prints DSP). You are right, Brian, we are astute, and the 3 colors here bring joy, vibrancy, and beauty. Your card is a great take on the sketch, and cleverly CAS!!! 🙂

  4. Love how you have taken the sketch to a new place! And, of course, the colors are a “WOW” Love it.

  5. Love the ric-rac trim, and also how the main panel is off center. Great card, Brian!

  6. Oh Brian – how you get everything so very perfectly aligned is magic. Being a sewer and a quilter I just love ric rac and seeing it made from paper just puts a huge smile on my fact and yes – perfect alignment yet again! Wowser! I have almost given up trying to perfectly align twine on my cards. I’ve cheated and just cut twine and then taped it on the back of the card stock rather than wrap it around, I’ve tried putting teensy weensy pieces of tape along the twine so it won’t move – you name it, I’ve tried it but you, Mr. Magic, have mastered it. Fabulous card and it sure brightened this rainy day for me.

  7. LOVE the ric rac! But, until I looked closely, I only saw three strips (the real white are almost invisible)

  8. An amazing card complimented with a coordinated-lined envelope to put it over the top!! WooHoo!! Love it!!! 🙂

  9. Ric-rac! Brings me back to my childhood, simple fun and pleasant!

  10. Clever how your picture gives the optical illusion with the ric rac. Totally missed the 5 strips. I try and catch everything on your cards before reading tips, tricks and reminders. Better get my magnifying glass out. The centering thing, I’m totally the same way as you. I struggle putting things out of ‘kilter’. When I see cards from other people they look just fine. It’s a mental thing. Even though this was a bit of a struggle, I knew it would come together just fine. Told you so!

  11. I love this color combo! And what a fun way to use the ric rac trim. Thanks for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches this week!
