A Better Place: Happy Memorial Day

I’m so appreciative of everything that’s ever been given to me.  Sure, I’ve worked really hard to earn a lot of things in my life (like my friends and my career), but still many things have been given to me (like freedoms and liberties).  Even though Memorial Day is a great day to get together with friends and family, it’s certainly important to remember how much we have because of the sacrifices others made for us.  It’s true – we still have some distance before we are where we need to be, but look how far we’ve come!

Today’s card (as if it’s not 100% obvious at first glance) is my “thank you” card to all of those people we remember today:

  • Color Scheme.  Do I really need to explain why I picked these colors?  🙂  While Pacific Point seems a little bright for a classically beautiful patriotic card, it works.  Night of Navy is certainly too dark.  Most of this card, though is white with little pops of Real Red and Pacific Point.
  • We Have Rules.  I like to establish little “rules” for myself – little principles that I think, more often than not, are true.  One of those rules is that stacked shapes (scallop circles or starbursts) should be stacked directly on top of each other – they need to be separated by a circle.  I don’t know why – I just think it looks best to not stack them one on top of the other.  That said, you’ll probably find some of my projects that defy this rule, but rules are meant to be broken, right?Starburst Sayings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • A Medal.  My original design for this card was to position this emblem over a background of this red-and-white striped paper from Fresh Prints Designer Series Paper Stack.  When I saw how closely the striped paper resembles a ribbon on which a medal might be presented, I decided that would be appropriate for this Memorial Day card.

Stamp Sets:  Starburst Sayings  Papers:  Pacific Point, Real Red, Whisper White, Fresh Prints Designer Series Paper Stack  Accessories:  White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Starburst Framelits, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Our world truly is a better one because of those who fought for our rights and freedoms and those who continue to serve our country.  Happy Memorial Day!

Thanks for stopping by today!

  13. Brian:
    When I saw your card I immediately thought medal – military medal of course. It is an absolutely fabulous card and your words are inspiring.
    Having served in the military during the Vietnam War, I so wish our returning soldiers from that conflict got the welcome back that our military get these days. It still pains me to remember the rejection those soldiers returned to. Having said that it’s wonderful to acknowledge that people now realize what a sacrifice was made at that time and every time we need to defend our freedoms.

    • Grace, you said exactly what my heart speaks, too, about our Vietnam Vets and all veterans out there. Our freedom is bought by all, and we certainly should not take our vets for granted. God Bless American and our Veterans!
      {By the way, Brian, great job on the card! ;)}
      Hugs,

  24. Brian~ I cannot thank you enough for acknowledging our incredible military, past & present. Thank you to the moms that have sons serving… your service is SO appreciated. My father never returned from Vietnam 47 years ago (MIA). I was three. It means the world to me when people respect our flag and teach their children to honor it. It came at an enormous price and that price is still being paid. Thank you with all of my heart for remembering.
