Baby News for Freshly Made Sketches

You asked me to start Simple Saturdays, and I am happy to deliver it to you each week.  The challenge of Simple Saturdays adds one extra layer to my card-making routine, and I love it.  Today’s card is designed for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches – and I kept is super-simple for you.  Here’s my card:

Big News, Something for Baby, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS142And here’s the Freshly Made Sketches design that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • An Unexpected Combination.    I just love the new stamp set Big News.  There’s no better way to fill the front of a card than with big, awesome letters.  I really wanted to use the set, and I really wanted to use the new Typeset Specialty Designer Series Paper, but I couldn’t figure out how to use them together – until I realized that “news” is part of the sentiment.  Woo hoo!  A little duck from Something for Baby, and the whole thing comes together.
  • Blendabilities!  By now, you’ve seen lots of ways to use Blendabilties – and you’ll soon be able to order a set for yourself (customers can order several sets starting July 1).  For this card, there’s no blending – just good ‘ole coloring with a smooth and clean finish.  I used the small tip of the lightest shade of Coastal Cabana (it’s super-close to Pool Party) to fill in the letters – no visible lines, no streaks.  I do love these pens!Big News, Something for Baby, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS142Big News, Something for Baby, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS142
  • Color Scheme.  I really like Pool Party, Basic Black and Vanilla together.  Since this is a baby card, I needed to add a pop of another color.  The duck from Something for Baby added an unexpected burst of yellow that brightened up the black and pale blue.  I like how the duck rests just inside the sentiment.  I added three dimensionals behind the duck to make sure the thin piece of Very Vanilla wouldn’t bend up in transport.

Stamp Sets:  Big News, Something for Baby  Papers:  Pool Party, Basic Black, Very Vanilla, Typeset Specialty Designer Series Paper  Inks:  Memento Tuxedo Black, Daffodil Delight, Coastal Cabana Blendabilities (lightest shade of Coastal Cabana)  Accessories:  Baby’s First Framelits, Project Life Corner Rounder, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. How cute is this ? I really like the Typeset dsp and the way you combined the sentiment is neat ! I noticed the rounded corner at the top right side and it added another eye catching detail .
Aren`t you impressed with my clever card savvy ? I am learning all of this “card talk ”
    from you !
    Happy Saturday !

  2. Brian, once again your cleverness is outstanding. Pairing the big news sentiment with the Typeset DSP is spot on!

  3. Beautiful and clever, that DSP is perfectly matched with the “BIG NEWS” sentiment. I agree with Sonny, the rounded corner is a very pretty detail.
    Have a great weekend.

  4. OH. MY. GOSH! I love this, Brian. This is pure genius, yet so obvious once someone super-talented. like you, shows it to me! Love your choice of color, too.

  5. Clever way to tie paper and stamp themes. Nice idea of combining the vanilla card stock for a softer look.

  6. Super-de-duper! Love how you incorporated the DSP….you are just the King!

  7. Oh, so I am not the only one who has thought to use the Bledabilities to “just color.” Love how you paired the sentiment with the Typeset DSP, pretty close to brilliant.

  8. Ditto! The Typeset Specialty DSP would not have been a logical choice for a baby-themed card for me, but you always come up with such clever combinations, Brian!
I think I should keep my corner rounder punch right out on my desk … I always love how it looks on cards, but I forget about adding it to my own cards. Thanks, Brian, and have a great weekend!

  9. Oh Brian – Soft and simple, my kind of card. I absolutely love the typeset DSP but I think that’s because I was in the newspaper business for so many years. Now, to be absolutely truthful, I never would have even thought about using it for a baby card which just goes to show you who the artistic one is in this duo! Certainly not me. I really like this card and the crisp, clean look of it. Great job Mr. King!

  10. Love the clean and simple design. Really cute!

  11. Oh Brian! This has to be one of your best cards ever! At least in my top 5! Adorable!

  12. Beautiful card Brian, I have a soft spot for rubber duckies. Thanks for showing the versatility of the new Blendabilities.

  13. This is why YOU are THE KING! (Sorry, Elvis!). Only you would figure out that using the BIG NEWS lettering would go with that paper. What a clever idea! I also have a fondness for rubber ducks…. I actually used to make gift baskets and bought them to put inside baby baskets, but I kept one for me. He’s sitting on my tub in my master bath. Yours is adorable of course and perched in just the right spot. ! Love this card Brian…just great! 🙂

  14. Brilliant!!

  15. Clever and adorable, love it

  16. I’m in love with this stamp set and now I have to get it! So cute!
