Tutorial: The World’s Easiest Shaker Card

Yesterday I shared my first shaker card.  While I have the Shaker Frames that are in the Annual Catalog (they are a great way to start a shaker card), I decided to go another route for this one.  Here’s the card I shared yesterday:

#Hello, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FM166Today, I’m going to share the step-by-step instructions for how you can create this shaker card with its subtle peek-a-boos of sequins.

  • Cut the Box.  The front face of this card is created with the top of a Decorative Window Gift Box.  Rather than pull out my Window Sheets and build a shaker from scratch, I opted to cut corners by using the already-assembled box front.  I cut the lid off and then cropped it to a 3-1/4″ square.  The scalloped circle is already white- embossed around the circular window, so it’s almost like I’m working with a kit – several details are already done for me.  Woo hoo!
  • Cut the Paper.   Crop several sheet of card stock that will be used as the remaining components of the card:
        • Crop a 3-1/2″ square of Calypso Coral cardstock.
        • Crop a 4″ square of Crisp Cantaloupe cardstock.
        • Crop a piece of Kraft cardstock at 4-1/2″ x 9″ and score it at 4-1/2″.
  • Create the Sentiment.  I really love how the sentiment covers most of the window on the front of this card – but not all of it.  It causes the sequins (more about that later) to work to peek around the sides and share their shine with the recipient.  Stamp the “hello” sentiment from #hello in Versamark on Whisper White cardstock and emboss it with Calypso Coral Stampin’ Emboss powder.  Crop with a 2″ Circle punch.
  • Trim the Calypso Coral Cardstock.  I wanted to create a Calypso Coral border around window box but needed to hollow out the center of the cardstock so that it wouldn’t show through the window.  I punched the center with the 2-1/2″ Circle punch (as a starter) and then roughly cut around it.  No need to be neat because the cardstock is going to be glued behind the kraft lid.
  • Assemble.  The next steps are the quick-and-dirty for assembling the cardfront:
      • Glue the Calypso Coral piece to the back of the window, centering it on the sides of the box lid.
      • Surround the Calypso Coral piece with the edges from a sheet of Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I always save the edges for use with smaller objects, but it was kinda’ fun to use them all in one sitting.Building a Shaker Card, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
      • Place a handful of sequins in the center of the Crisp Cantaloupe piece of cardstock.  Here’s what mine looked like (but I suggest you put about half this amount).Building a Shaker Card, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
      • Peal the backing off the backs of the Stampin’ Dimensionals, flip it over and stick it to the Crisp Cantaloup piece – just over the sequins.
      • Glue the Crisp Cantaloupe piece to the kraft card base.
  • Finish it Up.  With Stampin’ Dimensionals, center the 2″ circle on the window.  If you want a super-sturdy sentiment, emboss it on a Whisper White notecard (they are thicker).  I didn’t use a notecard, so I added a bunch of Stampin’ Dimensionals to make it more sturdy.
  • Smile.  Sit back and smile – you’ve done it!  You’ve made a project you can be happy with and that will make someone else super-happy, too! #Hello, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FM166

And this concludes today’s Shaker Card Class.  This was SO fun to make – I can already see it working its way into my classes and clubs.  Woo hoo!

Well, I was wondering what stamp created that pretty white border around the front of your card and now I know, how clever that is Brian.
Great card, thank you for the super easy instructions. Those SU dimensional ”bones” sure came in handy!!

  3. Well, how about that ? You really had your creative thinking going with this card . Cute idea using (recycle comes to mind) the box top . I made a crafty item yesterday using a Kleenex box ,but not as a card . As someone commented yesterday that it`s “thinking outside the box”.

  4. Great tutorial, Brian! Such a fun card! Thank you!

  5. Great idea. Hope to try a shaker card soon. You are very clever!
    🙂

  6. Great card! I use foam tape (from the hardware section of a dept. store) around the edges of my shaker card, but never thought to use the edges of my dimensionals! What a terrific idea.

  7. Thanks for sharing this awesome idea!

  8. Oh my Brian – that does sound easier than other instructions I’ve seen for shaker cards. Leave it to you to find the simpler, easier way to make what appears to be a very complicated card. And, thanks for sharing those instructions with all of your followers. Very generous of you to do that. Have a fantastic day.

Awesome tutorial , I never would have guessed you used the top of a gift box to make that card. Next time I see you I’m going to have an apple for you, because you’re always teaching me new and creative ways to approach stamping and card making. Great job Brian

  10. Nice tutorial. I also use dimensionals on my shaker card. I think they’re much easier to work with.

  11. WOW! Brian you saved me so much time. I going to get started on these right away. You always amaze me with your creations. Have a great 4th July.

    Stay cool.

  12. Love it! Great ideas and use of products! I usually cut up and use my borders as I deplete a sheet of dimensionals but I should save them for things like this. Not like I’d waste them anyway! 🙂

  13. Brian,
What a great card and terrific instructions! I also like your thrifty idea to save the outer edges of the dimensionals to use for other projects. My kind of savings!

  14. i was wondering–thanks for reading my mind!

  15. Thank you Brian. This is a new one for me and one that I really like. I will be trying this soon. You are a wonderful demonstrator ! Lots of great ideas! Thanks for sharing.

  17. LOVE this card! Now I challenge you to use the rest of the box! A new lid, perhaps?

  18. Thanks for the directions! Such a great card! I LOVE Sharon’s idea! We know how you love a challenge! Can’t wait to see the new lid you come up with for that poor box with no lid. LOL

  19. I have yet to make a shaker card! I need to make one…hehehe! Love the colors and design of your card! Thank you for the inspiration! Have a great 4th!:-)
