Dear Santa – a Sneak Peek for Freshly Made Sketches

Would I be struck by lightning if I wrote a note to Santa to say, “I’ve been good all year.”?  I certainly hope not – I’ve been really, really good this year.  Well, maybe I should just leave it at “I’ve been really good this year.”  OK, just to be safe (and stay clear of lightning), I guess I should just say, “At one point this year, I behaved.”

Since the moment I first laid eyes on this week’s Freshly Made Sketches design layout, I have not been able to settle on anything other than the typewriter from the Tap Tap Tap stamp set.  I really wanted that typewriter in my card.  I’m not very “vintage,” though, so I had a little fun with the manual typewriter.  Here’s my card:

And here’s Amy O’Neill’s sketch that inspired my card:Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • New Specialty Designer Series Paper.  The upcoming Holiday Catalog is phenomenal.  I have a few items from the catalog, so I can’t help but share with you.  I know it’s a little early (customers will be able to order from the Holiday Catalog beginning August 28), but I promise it will be worth the wait.  Promise.  The card base on this card uses Under the Tree Specialty Designer Series Paper – a gorgeous kraft paper that’s rich in color and thick, thick, thick.  You can see a little sneak peek of the other side of the paper on the inside of the above card.  Woo hoo!
  • Can You Guess?  Today is like Game Night at your neighbor’s house.  Except…there’s no competition, and you can play right where you are.  So, I guess it’s NOT like Game Night.  Anyway, can you guess how many stamp sets I used in this project?  Can you name them?  Hint:  two are found in the Annual Catalog, and one is a sneak peek item from the Holiday Catalog that I used in this post.  Do you give up?  I used three.  The Tap Tap Tap stamp set is the most obvious, followed by Kinda Eclectic.  The less obvious stamp is For All Things, a watercolor-themed set from the Holiday Catalog.  I stamped the large watercolor washes all over the typewriter to give it some color without giving it too much color.  I stamped the typewriter on a Whisper White Notecard (thicker and sturdier than Whisper White paper), added the Crumb Cake watercolor stamp (stamped off once first) and the trimmed the entire thing.Tap Tap Tap, Kinda Eclectic, For All Things, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS146
  • Kinda What I Needed.  The rays from Kinda Eclectic were a last-minute addition to this card.  I needed something a little more exciting behind the typewriter, and the Real Red rays (stamped off once) added that pop I needed.  I only inked up the top half of the stamp so that the rays wouldn’t extend into the bottom portion of the circle (the part the peeks out from under the banners).Tap Tap Tap, Kinda Eclectic, For All Things, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS146

Stamp Sets:  Tap Tap Tap, Kinda Eclectic, For All Things  Inks:  Early Espresso, Crumb Cake, Real Red  Papers:  Under the Tree Specialty Designer Series Paper, Whisper White, Brights Background Designer Series Paper Stacks (Real Red, Old Olive)  Accessories:  Circles Collection Framelits, Stampin’ Dimensionals, Hexagon punch (for banner tips)

  1. Well done Brian! How did you type the letter to Santa?

  2. Love it! Beautiful card, Brian! Brilliant use of a “non-Christmas” stamp for a Christmas card!

This is really a great card. The striped background paper is very unexpected and gives it a really masculine feel. All the elements combine together so nicely. I especially like the sunshine behind the typewriter and the use of the chevron and polka dotted papers for the flags.

  4. Love the way this turned out. The Real Red rays really give it oomph.

  5. Love the card. I can’t resist a typewriter card.

  6. I think this is a great card Brian. I absolutely love the DSP you chose because the colors speak to me. I hope you know you sent me running to the Holiday catalog, lol.

  7. Love it! Great how you used non-traditional stamps for a Christmas theme. I love using non-traditional stamps for different holidays–always great when we demos can save a little money and still get a bang for our bucks! Thanks for sharing such a great card.

  8. Very cool card! How about “Dear Santa, I can explain…” =)

  9. Cute card, Brian! And I love the rays behind the typewriter — they really help it stand out. As for the sentiment…I know that you could say that you’ve been a really, really good demonstrator this year. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments which were recognized at convention this year. I’m so glad I got to meet you in person! I always love to see how you interpret our challenges at Freshly Made Sketches!

  10. What a fun card, and when it comes to Santa – haven’t we all been good? LOL. Love the sunburst behind the image – so clever! Thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.

  11. I LOVE the typewritten note to Santa. Such a fun idea! I want to marry the card base; I guess I’ll add that paper to my growing list. Sigh. Thanks for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches!
