When I Need a Friend

I really love the images in Today & Everyday stamp set – lanterns, a scooter, and cute nesting dolls.  I featured the lanterns as soon as I could get my hands on them (you can see that post here).  The nesting dolls are far more intricate than the lanterns, but they were just as fun to use.  Today’s project features these dolls on a Crumb Cake Notecard:

Today & Everyday, Choose Happiness, Stampin' Up!, Brian King Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • You’re a Doll!  I love these nesting dolls, but I’m not too crazy about the coordinating sentiment “Many thanks.”  While it’s cute, I think it could come off a little cheesy?  Is that terrible to say?  I wanted a “thanks for being awesome” card, so my brain almost exploded when I came across this sentiment from Choose Happiness.  Seems to fall in line with the nesting dolls, right?  “I need a friend, there you are.  And here you are again.  And again.”  I tilted the sentiment on the notecard to coordinate with the slant of the dolls.
  • Adding Pearls.  Once these cute dolls were colored and ready-to-go, I decided to dress them up a bit by adding some pearls.  I got a little carried away and added 36 small pearls.  I didn’t plan it that way, but 36 happens to be my lucky number (and thus favorite number).  I’m sure there are other ways to apply pearls to these patterns without using so many pearls, but I kinda’ like the way it turned out – a little something extra that doesn’t really take away too much from the overall image.Today & Everyday, Choose Happiness, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Coloring with Blendabilities.  I just love my Blendabilities – and I’m excited that you’ll be able to order the rest of them starting Friday.  Yippee!  I didn’t do any cool blending (I know that’s why they were created!) – instead, I just colored.  Coloring is so easy with these things!  I alternated colors (between Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight and Coastal Cabana) to balance out the patterns in the doll dresses.

I paired the notecard with a notecard envelope and added a liner with Sweet Taffy Designer Series Paper.  Perfect!

  7. Hi Brian:

You weren’t kidding us when you said you got carried away with the pearls however, the 36 you used were so perfectly placed and added so much to the card that it was definitely the way to go. The coloring that you used on the nesting dolls makes them look really authentic. You have more patience than I do to do all that coloring. Absolutely fabulous job as always. Anyone would love to receive that card acknowledging a special friendship. It would just warm your heart to know someone thought that much of you.

  8. Does you creativity ever take a break? I mean you bring us such awesome projects every day. I’m in awe. This card is adorable and the pearls add just the right touch.

  9. What an adorable card, Brian. I don’t have this set and to be honest, I wasn’t going to get it. But I may have to re-think that. This card shows us that you can have a cute card, colored up quickly, and no layers. Cute and quick. Love it. Thanks for sharing it today.

  10. Amazing card! Thanks for the close up so we can see the pearls. Don’t know how you are able to create card after fabulous card!

  11. A completely charming card Brian. My sister married into a Russian family and your card is reminiscent of the nesting dolls I’ve received as gifts from her in-laws following family trips to Russia. I’m told certain villages over there are known for making unique nesting dolls and two of mine have the name of the village they are from painted on it. One of my dolls uses a Coastal Cabana hue in the clothing pattern, a color used often in the early 1990’s by the artists from the beautiful village of Abramtsevo.

So, it’s your eye for all the little details that makes your blog such a delight to follow. Thanks for all the inspiration.

  12. This is darling – love the colors of the nesting dolls. And WOW 36 pearls! It’s a great touch!
