Getting Toasty with Freshly Made Sketches

This is my favorite time of year – while Summer isn’t yet over, I’m already thinking about Autumn.  After enduring a brutal summer, is it crazy that I can’t wait for it to cool off outside so that I can cozy up to a fire to warm up?  Today’s project for Freshly Made Sketches combines an image from on old-faithful stamp set with Blendabilities, some new Designer Series Paper and two new stamps from the Holiday Catalog.  I love this sketch – it handed me all the ammunition I needed to make this card:

The Great Outdoors, For All Things, Making Spirits Bright, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS151And here’s Kim Singdahlsen’s fun sketch that inspired my card:Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Three Colors Represented.  Other than Whisper White (which plays a very important role in this card), the primary colors used in this card are Early Espresso, Crumb Cake and Pumpkin Pie.  Each of these three colors is represented in the frames behind each of the thee central panels.  The top layer is saved for Pumpkin Pie, which has the starring role in this card.
  • Blendabilities.  I used Blendabilities to color the logs and fire on this card.  I used all three of the Pumpkin Pie Blendabilities in the fire but only used the lightest shade from the Crumb Cake markers.  It seemed so dark – and I didn’t want to make it any darker.  I brushed the Color Lifter over the logs several times to pull some of the color out – I really like the texture and depth that is added with the Color Lifter.
  • Sentiments.  Don’t these sentiments look like they were made to coordinate with one another?  While they are both found in the Holiday Catalog, they weren’t designed to coordinate (as far as I know).  The “Hello Fall” sentiment is from For All Things, a Fall-themed stamp set, while “Time to Get Toasty” is found in Making Spirits Bright, an alcohol-themed set.  Not only does this play-on-words work here, but the fonts seem to really match-up.

Stamp Sets:  The Great Outdoors, For All Things, Making Spirits Bright  Papers:  Early Espresso, Crumb Cake, Pumpkin Pie, Whisper White, Trim the Tree Designer Series Paper Stack  Inks:  Tuxedo Black Memento Pad, Blendabilities (Pumpkin Pie, Crumb Cake, Color Lifter)  Accessories:  Stampin’ Dimensionals

Thank you for stopping by today!

  1. This is a very nice card for all the guys in my life. Once again you did a super job. Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. I agree with you completely Brian, after a crazy and hot Summer, Fall is the most welcomed time of the year for me. The cool temperatures, the gorgeous colors invite you to get cozy and warm, with a hot cup of tea, in front of the fire place, just relaxing. My grandkids love it when we build a fire, kind of like the one on your card, to roast marshmallows and make S’mores.
You really know how to layer card stock and DSP, this sketch really gave you all that you needed to create this totally beautiful card. Thank you for sharing.

  3. As I sit here looking at this perfect Fall card, it is 66 degrees outside. Between the temperature and your card, I feel Fall in the air! Great job, Brian. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. (Not only do I love “pinning” your card designs, but I also have started “pinning” the sketch designs and color palettes you add to your blog. Thank you for doing that as well.)

  4. Oh my Brian – do I see 9 layers? Every time I see one of your cards I try to count how many layers you have. I think that is one of the reasons every single card you create, even the CAS ones, are so fabulous. I am going to have to train myself to think layers when I start a new card. Usually I just pick out colors or a stamp set and create as I go. I never seem to plan ahead. And, if I do plan ahead what I end up with is nothing like what I started with as a plan anyway! LOL At any rate, all I’m trying to say is that I just love the look of all your cards whether you have 20 layers (a bit of an exaggeration there I know) or 3 layers, they are always amazing! 🙂

  5. What an adorable combination of image and sentiments! Love it, Brian!

  6. I’m right there with you Brian. Autumn is my favorite time of year and after a brutally hot summer I’m ready for cool weather so I can welcome fall and get warm and toasty by the fire. Ahhhhhhh. Your card is just the teaser I need to hold on a little longer. It’s awesome how you used stamps from two different sets to customize your sentiment. And they are perfect together! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Great card Brian, love the colors you used.

  8. What a warm inviting card, even if I am in Cali, and the temps are hot! Thanks Brian

  9. Wonderful card, Brian! We haven’t had a hot summer, but when we’ve had the humidity it’s miserable! So, I am welcoming cooler temps. That’s what I like about the change of seasons until the snow comes…lol! Have a great weekend!:-)

  10. What a fabulous layout and card. Your coloring is perfect using the blend abilities.

  11. So not only do I love that image, the colors, the combo of the sentiments, and the fonts, but I love how you use all that blank white space so well!

  12. Brian, I love that you combined the old with the new. This is absolutely a great card.
Fall is my favorite time of year also… can’t wait for the fire to start crackling.
