Merry Monday – Non-Traditional Colors for Christmas

While I love all shades of green and red at Christmas-time, I have a weakness for non-traditional colors during the holidays.  Pinks, purples, blues, browns.  They can all play a fun role in traditional celebrations or whimsical celebrations.  That’s why I was so excited to see Lori’s challenge for Merry Monday this week – non-traditional colors on a Christmas card.  Woo hoo!  Here’s my card:

Lovely as a Tree, Holiday Home, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, MM131And here’s the banner for Lori’s wonderfully fun challenge:

MM131Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Soft and Bold.  While combining non-traditional colors with a traditional image, I wanted to also combine soft images with bold ones.  The soft, detailed image of this tree (Lovely as a Tree is a classic stamp set – I purchased this one more than ten years ago) is perfectly offset against these bold, rigid stripes.  The solid block of color behind the tree helps it to stand out against the stripes, as well.
  • Color Combination.  I would never design a Christmas with purple and pink ornaments, so why do it here?  Well, there was a challenge.  Go big, or go home, right?  Either way, I love this combination of colors – dark purple, light purple, soft pink and soft blue all balance each other perfectly.  If you like the combination, feel free to save or print this:    Color Inspiration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Photopolymers for Heat Embossing.  You know how much I love heat embossing, right?  I’m often limited to one stamp, though, because I want everything lined up perfectly – and that’s hard to do when a Stamp-a-ma-Jig is involved (I do love the Stamp-a-ma-Jig, but it’s no help here because of all the static it adds to the page).  After I stamped the tree with VersaMark and added the embossing powder, it was super-easy to add the photopolymer sentiment because lining it up was easy.
