Eye-Catching Ikat for Freshly Made Sketches

Paper crafting involves three distinct hobbies:  collecting, creating and organizing.  During Thanksgiving, I organized a bit in The Fungeon and came across a photopolymer stamp set I purchased but had never used.  Yippee!  Well, that stops today because I inked up that bad boy and am sharing it with you today in my card for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches.  Here’s my card:

Eye-Catching Ikat, Lots of Thanks, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS164 And here’s Jen Brum’s super-clean, super-fun sketch that inspired my creation:Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Color Combination.  I just love the combination of crisp aquas and rich reds.  One of my favorite customers baulks at this combination, but I find the combination invigorating and uplifting.  I don’t think they blend perfectly, which is what makes them so exciting.  Bermuda Bay and Coastal Cabana (neither of those colors sounds like it is appropriate for the middle of winter, huh?) felt like a perfect combination for this background pattern.  If you like this combination of colors, please feel free to save this:Color Inspiration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Eye-Catching Ikat.  If you weren’t paying attention when it was released, you might have missed Eye-Catching Ikat.  Ikat is a dyeing technique used to create patterns on textiles.  There so many options for using these shapes – I used the shape in the top, left corner and the one beneath it to  create this background pattern.  Because the set is a photopolymer, it was super-easy to line up the shapes (some are off a bit in my project, but that’s OK because the images are rather imprecise).
  • Pairing a sentiment.  I chose this sentiment from Lots of Thanks because, like the background images, it’s rather distressed and imprecise.  I surrounded it with three circles for two reasons:  (1) I separated the sentiment from the busy, busy [although beautiful] background pattern with the thick, solid circle of Real Red and (2) I wanted to pull in the three primary colors from the card – Bermuda Bay, Real Red and Whisper White are represented here (Bermuda Bay is standing in for Coastal Cabana).

Stamp Sets:  Eye-Catching Ikat, Lots of Thanks  Papers:  Real Red, Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, Whisper White  Inks:  Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, Real Red  Accessories:  1-1/4″ Circle punch, 1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-3/4″ Circle punch, White Baker’s Twine, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Well, you made this stamp set interesting . I will admit that I was not impressed with it ,but you made a colorful and eye catching example of how to use it . The color combo brings it to life and your talent for knowing how to use those colors is the key to a delightful card !

  2. This is so nice Brian! I love the pattern you created.

  3. Love the fresh pattern, sketch, and color combo!

  4. I did buy this set, Brian … I had seen so much of the designs in store and magazines.
The colors you used are perfect! Thanks for using this set!

  5. Even tho I love these colors together, I’ve not made a card featuring them. This will be my challenge today-I think using my old favorite Ruby Red, (which I am hoarding), and the two aquas. Very cool, Brian!

  6. Thank you for showing me what can be done with this stamp! I have had it for a while and wasn’t sure what I could do with it! I can’t wait to try it now!

  7. Love the pattern. I’m struggling with masculine cards, probably because I love flowers so much I buy all flowered stamps lol. This set would behold for either gender. Thanks!

  8. Nice card. I like the color combo ( it took me awhile to come around but I did, thanks to a certain 6 year old) and the way you used this stamp set! Photopolymer is da bomb!

  9. Love that you used this poor little forgotten set! You made a wonderful pattern!

  16. Ooo, Brian ,when I first saw it , I said ha ? When did that DSP come out , you fool me friend , no respect!!! Lol , I love it , and yes who would know those colors would look great together, but of course it takes a Gennie to make it look beautiful!!! Notice I didn’t say King ………. Lol!!!!!
