Holiday Cheer for Merry Monday

This week’s Merry Monday Challenge is a super-fun one – gold, silver, white and one other color.  There’s an art to combining gold and silver, but I’m always up to the challenge and am excited to share my project.  Here’s my card:

Festival of Trees, Cheerful Tags, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, MM138 And here’s the challenge banner from Debbie Henderson that inspired my creation:

MM138Tips, Tricks and Reminders

    • Combining Gold and Silver.  As I mentioned in the opening of this blog post, it can be really tricky to combine gold and silver.   Too much of a good thing can be too much.  Am I wrong?  My strategy was to include an ample amount of one and to minimize the use of the other. Gold pairs so beautifully with garden green so I decided to use gold as the more predominant of the two and just showcase silver on the Christmas tree ornaments.  Silver still plays an important role here – just not as loudly as gold.Festival of Trees, Cheerful Tags, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, MM138
    • Balancing the central panel.  My original plan was to center the focal panel on the Nordic Noel Designer Series Paper, but I’ve centered a lot of panels that way, so I decided to do something different.  Look at me being different!  I decided to shift it all to the left, lining up the strip of gold on the left of the banner with the strip of gold on the side of the panel underneath.  Funny thing – it’s certainly not centered, but it’s all still very balanced.
    • Glitter, Glimmer, Dazzling Details.  You already know about my dislike-dislike relationship with glitter.  When I mention that to people, they say Glimmer Paper isn’t messy.  Not.  They say that Dazzling Details isn’t messy.  Well I think that’s wrong, too.  I love the shininess of the glitter, but I’m not a huge fan of mess.  If a picture tells a thousand words, what does this picture tell you?Festival of Trees, Cheerful Tags, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, MM138

  1. Good grief, Charlie Brown, what happened there??!!! Did that bottle of Dazzling Details just exploded on your work table?? because that is what it looks like, sheeesh!! I’m glad you were not trying to unplug it (that is what you were doing, right?) by looking straight into the little applicator otherwise…..well, it’s to ugly to even think about it.
But, leaving this tragedy aside…..I just love your card, the gold framing all of your panels looks amazing, such an elegant detail to draw your eye to them. This cute little tree looks so cheerful and festive with all it’s little shimmery ornaments.
    Thank you for sharing. 🙂
PS. Did you put back all of the Dazzling Details back in it’s little bottle?? Just wondering. 😉

  2. What a HOOT on the Dazzling Details! Did it go POP! when it exploded? Great card and it covers the requirements to a T.

  3. Poor little Dazzling Details getting sick in the Fungeon! Too much sugar from Uncle Brian?
Seriously, I like the tailored simplicity of this card and those little dots of gold and silver together. And a glitter star. I’ll bet you had to take a nap from all the stress……

  4. It looks as though you were very lucky the Dazzling Details didn’t get on your card. That would have been my luck. Love the card with the gold, silver, white and green – they work so well together. Thanks for the inspiration.

  5. Ooo, Brian I love that beautiful card , you got the best ideas !!!! I always say sigh, why didn’t I think of that , lol !!
Love it , love the gold , it makes it look so elagent !! Tfs,
    Hugs Frenchie ,

  6. The picture tells me that you are going to need more Dazzling Details!

  7. Hahaha! Yes, I can relate to glitter mess! This card looks great, Brian!

  8. I like Garden Green and Gold .. …I like Garden Green and Silver ….I would have been a bit perplexed using all of them together . you did a great job with the challenge ! The glitter splat is what I get with the beloved GREEN GLUE ! I like it a bunch ,but it does not like me too much !!
Don`t you love those little trees ? Cute card !

  9. Super card Brian, I love all the sparkle. Glitter and glitter related products are sort of like cats, really aloof and destructive if they don’t count you among their adoring fans/ subjects. It knows you’re not a fan, so sing its praises for a bit and you’ll see a difference.

  10. Hi Brian:

Did you get the heebie jeebies when the dazzling details attacked? Have you fully recovered? Did you have someone to save you from having to clean up? You are just too funny! The explosion of glitter glue must have had a positive effect on you because look at the amazing card that resulted! Sometimes a perfect result comes from an accidental start!

  11. Ah, Brian, you make me laugh every day! Your card is beautiful, but it’s the glob of glitter glue that elicits a giggle. Thanks!

  12. I agree with all the comments, what a beautiful card and thanks for the laughter!
Personally, I love our glitter, however; NOT, using the dazzling detail.

  13. Well Brian, another lovely card! Yes a picture does usually tell 1000 words but I think this one tells just two with the first one being ‘oh’!!! I’m going to think of you every time I use dazzling details now!

  14. I love the card! Perfectly balanced the colors. I share your “love” of glitter, and that picture is definitely worth a thousand words to me-I won’t tell you which ones!

  15. Bet the hazmat alarms went off in full force! Did your neighbors come running to your rescue? All kidding aside your card is lovely.

  16. Next time, try putting a pin in the tip to unclog the cap if it doesn’t squeeze out easily when you try it. Exerting too much squeeze pressure on a clogged bottle will result in the catastrophe you experienced.

Love your blog and loved your mustache!

  17. Gorgeous card, Brian! Love all the glitter and shine! I, myself, love to add glitter for an extra touch. But, you are right as far as the mess that can happen…hehehe! What one does to craft, right!:-) Anyways, great card…love it!

  18. Such a beautiful card, Brian. The gold goes so well with the green and the touch of silver is the perfect accent. I totally agree about glitter 🙂

  19. Beautiful card, Brian. Thought you’d be interested: I just received an order delivery from Stampin’ Up! and inside there was…. a GLITTER EXPLOSION! Yes, a package of silver glitter broken en route and covered EVERYTHING!

  20. Beautiful and classy card. Thanks for the laugh, and for showing that even the pros have mishaps along the way. I hope you have recovered from the “glitter trauma” that you endured!

  21. That glitter glue “accident” looks like something I have to clean up after the cat. 😉
That said, I usually cannot get enough glitter/bling on my cards/projects. Thank you for sharing your creations. I always look forward to seeing what you post day to day. I wish you lived in the Seattle area!!

  22. Love it Brian! It’s like – why didn’t I think of that! LOL
I wish I had better talent but sometimes I think – I think too hard!

  23. That picture tells me that someone had a hard time squeezing the dazzling details bottle

  24. Hey Brian, at least it wasn’t on your project, LOL cute card.

  25. I’m with you Brian. I’m not a fan of that glittery stuff. I can’t seem to control the amount and it usually ends up looking hideous! LOL

  26. Lol, Brian! Looks like you need to add Dazzling Details to your letter to Santa. Pretty card; really like how the background paper ties to the tree. So precise and so you!

  27. Too funny! You may have a glimmer curse.

  28. OOPS! I have seen that happen a few too many times, Brian. Love your card. Great use of the silver glimmer. 😉

  29. Gorgeous card. As others have said, at least the explosion didn’t happen on the card. That mess is exactly what I had to clear up yesterday when my 3 year old son was crafting with glitter glue at Tuesday Tots – only his was gold glitter, and resulted from a new tube of glitter being squeezed too enthusiastically! Bless him.
Love all your ideas, and love that you hate glitter, as you are usually so enthusiastic about everything!

  30. Deanne @ Three Trees

Beautiful! Love the bit of sparkle!!

    Deanne 🙂

  31. Fabulous and festive, I love it Brian.

  32. Beautiful, Brian! The green is the perfect accent color, especially with your silver and gold ornaments bringing them together – great card!

  33. The same thing happened to me with the Dazzling Diamonds and I said some bad words out loud. Oh my! Love how you added the green to our color challenge this week. Your card looks great!

  34. Oh, my, Brian, it looks like you Dazzling Details alive and on the move! Either it won’t come out or it comes in a glob! Well not always, but sometimes! Love the gold and silver with the Garden Green! Just enough sparkle to make it fun.

  35. This post had a devastating effect on me Bryan ….. you did come to mind as my shooting glitter star occurred later that day!!! Good job Dazzling Details clears up so well for both of us!! Had to share with you…. I am sure it will make you feel better!!!

  36. Brian, I just love your clean style! Love the gold layering — adds just the right touch!

  37. Gorgeous card – the green works so well with the metallics 🙂

  38. Love how you combined the colors & green was a great choice for the 4th color! Wonderful card, Brian!

  39. Awesome Brian, love the combination of colours with the gold and silver and the added touches of bling.

  40. Glitter is a pain…I am with you! I keep a pin or tack nearby to clear the nozzles. I also store the bottles upside down to keep air bubbles from forming, getting less dry chunks. You can put magnets on the bottoms or store in a plastic bottle tray. It holds bottles of acryllic paint in a drawer. Or you can go cheap and make a holder out of chipboard and cardstock, like I have. I also have a holder for my spritzers. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
