A New Video – Card Design: Getting Started

We all love making cards and paper crafting projects – at least I assume you love it since you are here reading my little blog that pretty much focuses on those things.  I suppose you could just be a fan of all blogs or just love to read about people who play with paper, but I’m going to boldly guess that you, too, enjoy paper crafting.   Now that we’ve got that out of the way…

One of the most difficult parts of making a card can often be getting started.  What type of card do I want to make?  What images to I want to use?  Once those two questions are answered (birthday/silly, sympathy/floral, love/patterned hearts…), there are three more to answer related to texture, color and shapes.  Here’s a quick video I created to help inspire you to get started:

In addition to the methods for finding inspiration I mention in the video, I also play along with several online challenges (Pals Paper Arts, Fab Friday, Freshly Made Sketches) that define one element of a card for us to start us off.  They are a SUPER way to train your brain to create a card of your own.

Inspiration is truly everywhere -I hope you’ve found these tips and tricks helpful.  Tomorrow I’ll be sharing a cute card I made with the layout tips I shared today.  I hope you’ll come back tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. What a great treat ! A new video on Monday morning . This is a helpful one to say the least . Keep `em coming ! Wonder what that finished card will look like ???

  2. Always trying to improve my designs – love the tip about having scraps of punched paper and other basic shapes on hand to “sketch” with. Thanks as always for sharing your talents.

  3. Oh Brian, thank you so much for this video, please make more, this is what I need, someone to show me how to layer cards, how to combine colors, sheeesh!! as you know, this is what is most challenging to me. Now, maybe you can make another video on how to use pattern paper?? how to place it, cut it, etc.??? I hope you can do that, who better to teach this aspect of card making but the King himself!!!!!

  4. Perfect video! Thanks for outlining your basic first steps. The idea of having shapes available to “try out” is a great one! One inspiration I use for color combinations is nature — the autumn trees, gardens, etc. (Although, I must admit, living in the frozen north, not much color in nature these days!) And I think you may have covered this in an earlier blog post/video, but I use the rule of thirds for my designs as well which helps to insure some balance.

  5. Sooooooo helpful Brian. Great tips because you’re so right. The hardest part about making a beautiful card is getting started and finding the right design. Creating once you’ve come up with the design is the fun part.

  6. Great, informative video Brian. Thank you for those tips. I agree that there are times when inspiration escapes me and maybe I need to rely on the SU catalog a bit more thank I do. Your tips and tricks videos are always so helpful.

  7. Oh, wow! Super great tips, Brian! I just love the tip for how to come up with the sketch! It beats doing designs on paper and crossing them out…lol! Thanks again, Brian!:-)

  8. Great video Brian, so many helpful tips. I love the idea of having templates of different shapes and sizes to try out before you actually start cutting the card stock or DSP you plan to use thanks to your color coach.

  9. Hey Brian, speaking of playing with shapes, my sister is crazy about cutting out things from paper. I have several bags of things she has cut for me, if your interested in seeing any of them I would love to send you some. These are great to pop up on cards! Thanks for the video.

  10. Oh BRIAN , vary nice tips and ideas , that’s the kind of things that take me long to get started , your just to good to us , you seem to know where we have a heard time , thanks so mush for all you do !!!!!

  11. Brian, this video is fantastic! I get asked the same question and you’ve put it in a nutshell. Thank you! I love your idea of punching shapes from the scraps to use later – very clever. Thank you for sharing your great ideas.

  16. Hello Brian
Didn’t realize crafting etc was so popular and involved. Seems fun
I am fairly new at crafting. I recently saw your videos on you tube. Your most recent video was helpful. Where to begin for me is the hardest.
I’m retired. Budget is limited. However Ive had a few craft items for abt 5-8yrs. Didn’t know where to start. Hadn’t hv time to start because was caregiver for my mom. Now i hv time. Ive watched several you tube videos.
Suggestions helpful where to start. I hv cricut explorer older version 12×6, ecraft, Martha Stewart scoring board 12×12 which has templates included, ultimate crafters companion to name a few. I hv made few projects from watching videos. Most important better card stock and paper to purchase.
I’ll stop chatting. And I’ll sign up in stampin up group. Interested in projects for gkids. Included are 11 twins boy and girl. Would like boy project. Even he enjoys crafts.
    Thank you
