You Light Up My Life for FMS170

I received the stamp set One Tag Fits All during Stampin’ Up!’s Occasions Catalog preview in December.  While I really like some of the cute images and love some of the sentiments in the set, I placed it on my shelf and haven’t used it since receiving it.  Today, that neglect ends.  Yippee doodle dee!  Here’s my super-simple card that features One Tag Fits all for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge:

And here’s Jen Mitchell’s sketch that inspired my creation:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Band or a Gap?  When I first saw this week’s sketch from Freshly Made Sketches, I assumed the band across the middle would be a string of ribbon or a thin strip of paper.  Maybe a strand of washi tape would give me the desired look.  As I stared at the sketch, though, the band changed its form.  I decided to create the same look by, instead, creating two panels of paper.  I switched up the papers, too, for a little added intrigue.  Oh, how intriguing I am!
  • Light it up!  I remember playing Debby Boone’s classic hit single on my record player as a child.  I’d mumble through all the words until it got to “…now you’ve come along…” and then watch out – by that point I was primed and ready to belt out “AND YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE…”  Although One Tag Fits All comes with a great string of little, round lights lights to accompany the sentiment “You light up my life,” I really wanted a solid light bulb, so I reached for my Sale-a-Bration set You Brighten My Day.  The combination of the two was perfect for the look I wanted to achieve.
  • Layering the Tag.  We’ve grown accustomed to having stamped images that perfectly line up with the images in our stamps – we’re spoiled that way.  One Tag Fits all threw us a bit of an unexpected curveball with the large tag in the set, but I kinda like the changeup.  The Note Tag punch doesn’t perfectly crop out the tag – instead, it perfectly fits inside the tag image.  To create this look, I stamped the tag in Bermuda Bay on Very Vanilla cardstock and hand-snipped it.  I then embossed my lightbulb from You Brighten My Day in Crushed Curry on Very Vanilla cardstock and cropped it out with the Note Tag punch.  I really like that I can layer with an overlap if I choose – and I choose.  Want to see tips for embossing without a curled-up end result?  Check out my video about Heat Embossing Techniques video here.

  1. Hi Brian, This is a super card. I pictured it for Valentine’s Day too. You have definitely made me look at the One Tag Fits All stamp set.

  3. Thanks, now that song will be stuck in my head all day!

  4. What a cheerful, fun card! It will definitely brighten someone’s day. Thanks for sharing!

  5. So you have to hand snip out the tag image with stripes and use the punch on the word part….correct. That’s good to know. I think that would be easier than having to snip the top of the image without a line to follow. Cute card and I like the use of the separate pieces of paper to make the line in the middle. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Thank you so much! I just received the Flashback DSP, have the tag set and I’m ready to CASE this. No light bulb but that’s OK 🙂 You are simply wonderful! I’ve ordered a lot less ribbon since following you. So many other options to make an impact.

  9. I received this stamp set at the catalog event, too, and gave it away. I didn’t like anything about it. Now, however, I’m thinking I made a mistake–this card is really clever and colorful. Leave it to Brian to come up with a winner! And thanks for the reminder about this song–it reminds me of a sweetheart I had at the time the song was popular, and I gave him a little yellow duck candle. Sigh.

  10. Wow I recently punch this tag with the tag punch and never thought about cutting one and punching one, to create this fun mat.

  11. I love this card Brian. The colors work so well together and candy dots are always a great accent.
