Happy Day with A Happy Thing for PP228

There’s nothing like a quick and easy sketch to get your creative juices going.  There’s about seven thousand ways you could go with this week’s sketch from The paper Players.  I chose to honor the simplicity of the sketch by going simple.  How do you like me now?  Here’s my card:

A Happy Thing, Cheerful Critters, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP229And here’s the banner for Jaydee’s challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Colorful Bird.  I’ve been in love with this chubby, little bird since the moment I saw him in the Sale-a-Bration Catalog.  The projects created with this bird have been so colorful and so bright that he seems like a mythical bird.  The creative side of me says, “Let go of intuition – paint him with as many colors as you want” but the other side of my brain says, “define him, color him as he exists – if such a bird can exist?”  Well, from what I can tell from hours and hours of research (well, maybe it was a 2-minute Google search), this bird is a long beak bee eater – check out these images for yourself here – and he comes in a variety of colorful mixes.  Woo hoo!
  • A Daffodil Delight Base.  I don’t normally decide on light-colored card bases.  In general, I choose a darker shade so that the image on my card will pop.  With this cheery, “happy day” card, I couldn’t resist a Daffodil Delight base.  Rules were meant to be broken, right?  This card base, paired with this image and this Wild Wasabi-striped paper says, “I’m ready to be happy.”
  • Snipping the Beak.  I’ve filmed a fun, little video that I’ll be sharing with you tomorrow to show you how I cropped this circle but let his little beak pop over the edge.  It might be a new idea to you, or it might be something you’ve done before.  If so, I hope it’s a fun reminder of the technique.

  9. Hi Brian:
Congrats on finding the name of this bird. I wouldn’t be sure of what to put into the Google search – “long beak bird”, “fat little bird”, “multi colored bird with long beak”? LOL You get my drift. Anyway, thank you for finding the name, it’s always nice to be accurate in reference to a bird. Now, you can take all of that fabulous information with you to Leadership and share your knowledge! You did a fabulous job of coloring in this bird and I wondered how you got the beak to overhang the cropped circle. Just a beautiful card from a talented artist. Love it.
