A Petal Potpourri Birthday

I love a good celebratory birthday card!  Images of balloons, confetti and cake scream “happy birthday” even without a celebratory sentiment.  What happens when you flip things around a bit?  What if the only birthday-ish things on a card the words “happy birthday”?  That was my challenge today.

Here’s my card:

Petal Potpourri, Because You Care, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingTips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Wallpaper of Paper.  The background of this paper was created with a “Happy Birthday to You” sentiment from Because You Care, a host set from the Occasions Catalog.  Not only are the photopolymer images super-easy to line up, but they layer perfectly on top and below one another.  That’s the only part of this card (other than the handwritten note inside) that would define this as a birthday card – and I think that’s enough.
  • Lazy, Lazy Me.  Do you see how solid this flower’s petals are?  The stamp can give you amazing coverage as long as the ink pad is fully inked.  My Tangerine Tango ink pad, though, needed a date with the coordinating reinker, and I didn’t feel like reinking it.  As such, I achieved complete coverage by stamping the image in Versamark and embossing with Tangerine Tango Stampin’ Emboss Powder (this powder retired last year, but I still had a bit left in my sealed container, so…)
  • Base Layer.  The flower is embossed on Whisper White and cropped with the Flower Medallion punch.  I snipped between each of the petals to add dimension to the flower.  To add depth, I added a layer of Tangerine Tango beneath.  I only cropped the flower from Tangerine Tango and turned it at a slight angle to make sure it pops from underneath.

So, do you agree that a birthday card doesn’t HAVE to have cake and balloons?  Do you think I succeeded at my challenge to make a non-birthday image into a birthday card?

  8. WOW!! the card indeed shouts Happy Birthday loud and clear. The photopolymer stamps really make it so easy to line up words without the use of the SAM, very clever way to create your very own fantastic DSP.
I think the flower looks better heat embossed Brian, the melted powder gives it a beautiful sheen.
    Thank you for sharing.

  9. Fabulous card! Thanks for sharing!

  13. Honestly Brian, before I read your description of your card I thought “boy, that is a great DSP”! It is so perfectly stamped that it really is difficult to think it was created with a single stamp. Absolutely gorgeous card which definitely met the requirements. The colors are fabulous and the design is beautiful. Great job as always. Hugs, 🙂

  17. What a beautiful card! Thanks for highlighting that hostess set. Honestly, I’d never really noticed it, and it’s a really great set.

  18. I love this card, AND I just got the Because you care stamp set, so now I can give it a try! Yeah! And, last night I won a door prize at our demo meeting of the Artisan Embellishments, so now I can try your beautiful card with the stenciled roses. Yeah again!!

  19. I literally decided last night not to spend my hostess cradits on that set – and now I’m wondering if maybe I ought to have done! Thanks, Brian!!! But I went with some other sets (like Tap Tap Tap) which you have featured recently and I liked what you did with them, so I’m not totally bummed yet!
