Life is Good for FMS181

Wow!  Yesterday’s Blog Candy Giveaway generated a lot of excitement, huh?  I asked you to share the ONE THING you love most about spring – and you responded.  If you missed the post, you still have time to leave a comment (check it out here).

With this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge to inspire the layout, today’s card uses Petal Potpourri (that’s twice in a a week!) and Project Life Remember This to create a bright and cheery reminder that life is really great.  Here’s my card:

And here’s the challenge banner that inspired my project:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Petal Potpourri Background.  Maybe I’m a little “late to the party” when it comes to Petal Potpourri.  I’ve really not been excited to pick it up since the new catalog came about, but now I can’t seem to put it down.  🙂  In my project on Thursday, I used the lacy image from Petal Potpourri to create a fun background (see that project here).  I filmed a little video about background to share with you (coming up this week), and this background piece was the “throwaway” from the video.  I was so pleased with this piece that I kept it to use – and this sketch gave me a great reason to use it.  Thank you, Freshly Made Sketches!
  • Shapes.  I had a BRILLIANT idea to surround the sentiment with the a cropped piece of cardstock from the Flower Medallion punch – it’s the punch that coordinates with the flower stamp shown above.  Silly me, the idea wasn’t as brilliant as I hoped it would be.  Why?  The punched edges from the Flower Medallion clashed way too much the shapes of the flowers on the paper underneath.  A variety of circle punches allowed for the punch to transition smoothly into the busy background.
  • Color Combination.  How crisp and rich is this color combination of Melon Mambo and Night of Navy?  The deep blue matures the “girly” background quite a bit, don’t you think?  If you like this combination, too, please feel free to save this:Color Inspiration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

  1. Cute card, love the colors and layout!!

  2. Great looking card, I love the color combination 😉

  3. Love your card – spring is here ! Would have loved to see your try to sorround the sentiment – maybe I would have liked it 🙂

  4. Hi Brian:

I find it very, very difficult to put my card stock at a wonky angle. If I do that with any DSP or other card stock it never looks balanced to me yet, you have done it perfectly! I’m going to have to spend some serious time studying this card to figure out why I like it so much vs. why I never like it when I do something similar! Perhaps it’s the perfectly placed white candy dots? Fabulous card from a fabulous designer.

    • Grace, To balance a panel like this, watch the top, left corner and the bottom left corner as you glue the panel down. You want to make sure your corners hit about the same distance from the edges and that you are left with the same amount of space above and below the panel. That satisfies my need for things to be balanced. The thick panel across the middle (also part of the FMS design) also helps me to feel like it’s all solid and grounded. 🙂

  5. I love your card with the spring colors. I have this stamp set and I’ve been loving the cards you’ve made using it. I agree with Grace about having difficulty placing paper on an angle and I can definitely use more practice. I love the design for this challenge.

  6. You know what would be great, if you have the time? Two contrasting cards, one showing your first (or second, or third) attempt and why you didn’t care for it, and then your final version. I love before-and-after pictures of almost anything, as it helps me see what was changed and why it made such a difference. For those of us who usually CASE our cards and aren’t naturally creative, it might be the boost we need. Just sayin’, as it’s YOUR blog. 🙂

  7. Love all your clean and simple cards, Brian – you have given us many ideas for layouts that are quick and easy to make, combining the bright spring colors, designer papers, punches and diecuts – thank you!!
