Sending Wishes with Stampin’ Up!’s Traveler

This week’s Paper Players Challenge is focused on transportation.  As soon as I read Sandy’s theme challenge, I knew I’d be showcasing Traveler, a stamp set that was new in Stampin’ Up!’s 2014-2015 Annual Catalog.  It’s not brand new to Stampin’ Up!, but it’s brand new to me – after seeing that the set would carry over into the 2015-2016 Annual Catalog, I finally broke down and ordered it.  Here’s my card:

Traveler, Butterfly Basics, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP243

And here’s Sandy Mathis’ Paper Players challenge banner that inspired my project:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Clean and Vintage.  I’ve never been able to pull off a vintage card – I tried once, and it looked like something you’d find in a gutter behind a bar (see that disaster here).  Clean projects are in my wheelhouse, so I embrace them wholeheartedly.  While this Traveler set appears made for a vintage project, I think I’ve pulled the locomotive into a clean, simple project.  Stamped in Crumb Cake, the image seems to step backstage a bit so the gorgeous sentiment can shine.
  • Accents in White.  While I love both Very Vanilla and Whisper White, it’s the Whisper White here that really helps this card to pop.  Mossy Meadow and Crumb Cake pair so nicely together for a smooth, earthy look, but the thin layers of white frame the central image perfectly.  The white brightens everything – and I love that, especially when I’m sending wishes right at ya!
  • So Square.  I do love a square card – they are the easiest projects to layer.  This one starts at 4-1/4″ – and then six smaller squares complete the look.  That’s seven layered squares with just two images stamped.  I love to play around with the sizes of the layers to reach the right balance of color and borders – it’s so square.  🙂  If you missed my video about framing an image with borders, please see it here.

  1. What a great card Brian! Love the colors!

  2. This is a perfectly clean vintage card Brian. I love the colors and layers and the light colored train with a bold sentiment. Well done. I couldn’t resist peeking at the St Patty’s day card because I missed that one in the busyness of life. I loved your description of that,”like you found it in a puddle outside a bar the day after St. Patricks day”. Very suiting description. Lol

  3. You’ve nailed that! Very nice indeed!

  4. Brian, you get an A+ in layering! (If one were giving grades!) I love that some mats love a very narrow border and some are a bit wider. As always, a great card.

  5. Lovely image of this train Brian but, what I love the most is your impeccable matting, oh my goodness!! it’s just so beautiful and it frames this image perfectly.
7 layers of CS cut and cropped just the right way to guide your eyes to the main image and sentiment.
    Thank you for sharing 🙂

  6. I am also a demonstrator and want to thank you so much for your great videos. The video that explain the easy way to line the envies!! I line all of them now and even have my customers doing it. I had only made 3D items with the framelits till I watched your video. Thanks for all you do. Linea

  7. I like this stamp set ,but I don`t have it . Now I am tempted because of your card . I really like that the train almost represents a memory of the past .
    I like this card !
(your behind the bar comment made me think of the show Bar Rescue ! Giggle)

  8. Brian, you made me snort with laughter this morning! “. . . gutter behind a bar.” I wish I could afford to go to convention this year and hear some of your funnies in person! But, I digress. I L-O-V-E love this card and its perfection. Those borders are beautifully balanced in size and color. I haven’t ordered the Traveler stamp set either, but it called to me when I went on my first cruise last September. Maybe you have given me the inspiration I need to get it and make a “cruise anniversary” card for those who went with me.

  9. Oh my Brian – 7 perfect layers on one card! I really like this quite masculine image. I too like nice clean looking cards. Grunge is definitely not for me. I have tried several times to vary the size of multiple borders on a single card with little to no success. You have a knack for that. I find I always end up with same sized borders. Another fabulous card from a fabulous card designer. TFS

  10. Two words, love it

  11. Hi Brian,
I recently joined your Blog followers and I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the instructional videos!! I have learned a lot of new “tricks” already and I look forward to implementing them in my own card creations!
    Thank you so much!

  12. LOVE THIS CARD!!

  13. what an impeccable “L7” card Brian. your eye for balance and proportion are second to none.

  14. Love this! I don’t think I would ever have thought to put the train and that sentiment together. Beautiful matting! Crisp and clean (and no caffeine!)

  15. I thank you for using the Traveler stamp set. I have a hard time coming up with salutations that coordinate nicely with these images. This card is perfect for my model railroading son-in-law who has a birthday this week. Fun, sharp looking card.

  16. I’m not good at truly vintage either Brian, so it’s no surprise I love this card. Imagine how I felt when I was asked to demonstrate a sneak peek of this set at a UK regional event this time last year! I’ve found plenty of great ways to use this set and I know you will too – the simplicity of your two stamps makes a great card and your choice of colours and the layering are definitely what turns it into a wow! Thanks for joining us again over at The Paper Players this week!

  17. Great CAS card, Brian! I love the colors, and I am always so impressed at how meticulous your creations are. Thanks so much for playing along with my Transporation Challenge at The Paper Players!

  18. Fabulous card, Brian! So clean and classy. Thank you so much for joining us this week at The Paper Players! 🙂
