Three Things I Like: Paulette Berkbigler

I’ve really enjoyed sharing the cards from my Spring One-for-One Swap with you over the past week. If you missed the first three posts for the One-for-One Swaps, you can see them here:

All of the cards were all terrific, but some of them really stood out to me.  Today, I’m happy to share a card that was submitted by Paulette Berkbigler – every single piece of this card is beautifully crafted with precision and detail.  After I share the card, I’ll share three things I like most about her card.  Here’s Paulette’s project:

Three Things I Like: Paulette Berkbigler

  •  Z-fold Beauty.  I’ve never shared a z-fold card with you on my blog, but I’ve made them (and I love them).  Paulette mastered the balance of objects on this card.  There’s A LOT of stuff on this card – yet it all seems to work beautifully.  It takes a talent to add and add and add without ending with a cluttered mess.  Paulette is obviously a true talent.  🙂  If you want a quick primer on making this type of fold, check out Dawn Griffith’s video here.
  • Colors.  Let’s talk about these colors Paulette used.  Inspired, no doubt, from the Maritime Designer Series Paper she used as the base of this card, Paulette uses four colors that SCREAM nautical:  Coastal Cabana, Night of Navy, Real Red and Crumb Cake.  She adds the Crumb Cake to the mix, which grounds the colors perfectly.  All of these colors are balanced on this card – which means two things:  (1) Paulette played around with the shapes a lot and (2) she did a lot of squinting while making this card.  Where are my nickels, Paulette?
  • That knot!  It didn’t stand out to me at first because I was paying attention to all the shapes and colors on this card, but go back up!  Did you see the perfectly tied knot on the lower, left side of the card?  If you missed it, scroll back up and take another peek.  I do KNOT want you to miss it!  I’m guessing Paulette is either a skipper or followed a step-by-step manual from an old schooner book to perfect that!

The best of all, this whole thing folds up to fit in a standard envelope.  Yippee!

This card is stunning. Like Brian said, there is so much going on with this card, but I don’t find it overwhelming at all. Instead, I’m mesmerized by everything and keep looking at it to make sure I don’t miss anything! Paulette, this is beautiful!

    Love it!

  25. This is a great card. Would love to have instructions for the knot!

    • Hi, Lisa! So glad you liked the knot — it’s called a Sailor’s Knot & I found instructions for it on a 2011 blog post at mnfroggie’s Ink Pad — hope you will give it a try! I also found several videos online that were very helpful

  26. Magnificent card Paulette! 🙂

  27. WOW! that is one special card! And yes, the know is really impressive. I will miss that Maritime designer paper (which is on sale this week.) So glad you have done this share, Brian. Lots of great cards but this is most assuredly a standout!

  29. I LOVE this card!! I love all things nautical and this card is perfection. The knot, the whale (he’s one of my favorites of all time), the flags, the stamps — and definitely the z-fold. Great card, Paulette, I’ve gotta make one — thanks for the inspiration! And, thank you, too, Brian, for hosting another swap. I missed participating in this one but I’m in for the next!

  30. Love it! I agree; everything works so well together!

  31. Wow! Love everything that Paulette did to make a stand-out card; from the colors she chose, to the knot, to the beach icons. Whoever got her card in the swap is one lucky person.

  32. Perfection all around!!

  33. This is a gem! What a masterpiece!

  34. Thank you so much for all your kind remarks — it was so much fun to try a z-fold card and to use some of my favorite stamp sets and designer paper ( I too will miss the Maritime DSP!). Thank you, Brian, for hosting the card swap and for making it possible for us to be inspired by all the creativity and beautiful cards that were shared!

  35. Fantastic card! Love how the crab is “holding” the sand dollar.

  36. Selina Kilpatrick

Wow! What an awesome card. I’m so glad you pointed out the knot because I totally missed it at first and it’s amazing! Great addition to a beautiful card.

  37. Love this card. I haven’t done a Z fold before, but if I can make this, I will use it as a “Happy Graduation” card for a grandson that is going to study Marine Biology. Perfect.

  38. A “knoutical” work of art! Love it!

  39. Love love love this and would love directions on the Z-fold card and knot

  40. Awesome card Paulette!

  41. Great card ideas (IF) you hurry and buy some of the 12 x 12 cardstock which is essentially going away for the most part. You can do it with 8-1/2 x 11 – just make it 10-1/2″ long make the top a 2″ instead of 2-1/2 and score at 3-1/2 and 7. Card is smaller – but workable. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks, Roxy — I appreciate the measurement adaptations so I can use the standard card stock also — will be sure to keep this info handy for future projects!
