DO NOT Make this Card!

I’m completely and totally in love with the card I’m sharing today, but it comes with a simple warning – unless you have oodles of time on your hands and unless you possess the patience of Job, this is not a project you should ever start.  It sounds simple, but it’s frustrating and time-consuming.  After I started it, I just HAD to see it through to completion.  I’m thrilled with the outcome, but I’m determined to never, ever make another card like this.  🙂  Here’s my card:

Watercolor Wings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS191

And here’s the challenge banner for Jen Timko’s fun sketch that inspired my project:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Bit-ty Butterfly.  With the introduction of the Bold Butterfly Framelits that create a large, solid butterfly that fits perfectly behind the Butterflies Framelits, we now have the ability to layer this beauty without snipping out a piece.  I cropped a solid butterfly in Very Vanilla using the Bold Butterfly Framelits.  I then cropped this gorgeous butterfly in Blackberry Bliss with the Butterflies Framelits and glued it down.  No need to be careful with the glue, though, because I popped out the bits from three more butterflies (in Delightful Dijon, Soft Sky and Pink Pirouette) and glued them into the openings.  Time consuming but smile-generating.Layering Butterflies with Stampin' Up!'s Butterfly Dies, stampwithbrian.com
  • Beautiful Sentiment.  The first thing I noticed about Watercolor Wings (even before I noticed all the amazing layers you can stamp with this set) was the gorgeous sentiment hidden inside:  The little moments with you matter a lot to me.  I love the script of it and the super-sweet sentiment.  That was the selling point for me!  All the rest is just cream cheese frosting on the delicious cake – cream cheese, by the way, is the best frosting.Watercolor Wings, Stampin' Up!
  • Delightful Dijon.  This entire card started with this paper from Bohemian Designer Series Paper.  I’m not yet a huge fan of Delightful Dijon (it always takes me a while to warm up to the yellows), but I’m head-over-heals in love with this paper that’s all Delightful Dijon and Very Vanilla.  The card needed a colorful butterfly to complete its transformation.  If you also like these colors, feel free to save this:  Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration: Blackberry Bliss, Delightful Dijon, Soft Sky

Stamp Sets:  Watercolor Wings  Papers:  Bohemian Designer Series Paper, Blackberry Bliss, Delightful Dijon, Soft Sky, Pink Pirouette  Inks:  Blackberry Bliss  Accessories:  Butterflies Framelits, Bold Butterfly Framelits, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Brian, I said a big out loud “Oh!” when I saw this card. Absolutely stunning!

  2. Thanks Brian…..I have been telling myself for months that I didnt need the Butterfly thinlits……..now I want them…stunning butterfly!

  3. Just WOW on the butterfly! And I’m with you on cream cheese icing, or anything cream cheese

  4. Another awesome way to use those butterfly thinlets. Thanks Brian!

  5. So I’m thinking you didn’t save the other bits from the butterflies you cut out to make a few more then I’ve made a few of these and agree they’re time consuming but at the same time stunning – love your card!

  6. Wow! That is a stunning card, but it must have been “a bit” difficult keeping track of those itty bitty pieces.

  7. That is absolutely amazing…and cuss worthy with all those teeny tiny pieces. So happy that you made this to share! Great technique!

  8. Love your butterfly! Die Cut Inlay is easy peasy if you use transfer adhesive and the dryer sheet technique. A good pair of craft tweezer is a must also. I know you have all these things so let’s make more…LOL

  9. Ooh , Brian, that’s so pretty ,you did a great job, it shows you did lots of work on it !!!!
Tfs , I promise not to try it !! Lol,
    Hugs Frenchie ,

  10. I think it looks great. I am sure someone special will end up with it, even though you don’t know who right now. Have a great day.
    🙂

  11. Love this post Brian!! I think instead you’ve inspired us to GO make this card!! It’s a beaut!

  12. Oh my, what a beautiful card! This looks like a challenge for me someday! The best things always take time and patience.

  13. Amazing card. But it looks like you stamped the solid butterfly in blackberry bliss onto the card stock then this beautiful butterfly is added with dimensionals. Is that correct? Also looks like the white was added on top of the DSP, and the solid was stamped only on that so it is not on the background DSP. Love the deep dimension of that look. Your talent never stops amazing me!

  14. Oh King of Details! You actually sat and glued all those teeny tiny pieces into the wings of that amazing butterfly! How long did this actually take? I’m not sure if you are patient or plain stubborn but I know that in order for me to do that my stubbornness would be the winner. I can see myself at my desk, gritting my teeth, grumbling below my breath, berating myself for starting this mission while I say “you will NOT defeat me, I will complete this card!”. LOL It’s just gorgeous Brian and I laud you for your patience for sure.

  15. WOW! What else is there to say!! Except…..OMG…I did not realize the new butterfly framelits coordinated with the other ones! MUST BUY!!! LOVE!!!
As always, thanks for sharing! I don’t know how you think of these ideas!

  16. When I saw the “Never ever, etc” I thought of a Taylor Swift song !
I did ONE of these …love it and I am keeping it for myself !
You did a beautiful job and you were brave to venture into the Delightful Dijon use ,but it does have an impact with certain colors such as the Blackberry Bliss . Pretty pretty card !!

  17. Oh my- gorgeous! Now I feel challenged to try it when I have an entire afternoon to spend in the craft room! Thanks Brian!

  18. Selina Kilpatrick

Just beautiful! Thanks for the warning but I may have to give it a try. 🙂

  19. Beautiful card, Brian. Butterflies are my favorite. I now need the Bold Butterfly dies and Watercolor Wings stamps.

  20. Beautiful card Brian!

  21. Absolutely beautiful card today! The colors are not ones I would have thought would go together, but they really work here. Thanks for all the effort.

  22. I did this with the retired Lattice die. It was a fantastic but tedious outcome.

  23. Beautiful card,Brian!! I love the pretty colors and beautiful butterfly!!
Thank you for joining us at FMS!!

  24. Oh, my! So beautiful, Brian! Love that gorgeous butterfly! Looks like a lot of tiny pieces, but so worth the effort!:-)

  25. I think this is absolutely gorgeous. It always amazes me how the simplest looking cards take the longest but make the best impressions. Love your mom and her videos — she needs to smile more and look like she is having a good time. The first time I watched her, I thought, “He is forcing her to do this!” She seems like she would be a lot of fun and I’m sure the two of you together are a hoot!

  26. Wow!!! What an awesome card, it’s absolutely stunning. Phenomenal job Brian

  27. Fabulous card, Brian!! Thanks for going to all that trouble. And, of course, I am going to make this card – I printed out your sample and comments with a heading of “quilted butterfly card”. If I can get it to work, I’ll send you a picture. Thanks for your inspiration!!

  28. Love this card, Brian. It is my favorite you’ve made so far and all of your patient paper piecing was well worth the time. Great job!!

  29. You crack me up! It is beautiful–butterful! Nice work, your majesty.

  30. i would agree with Mona as it is one of my favorites that you have made (which has tough competition as you have made many!) don’t see a case anytime soon – too time consuming but WOW

  31. That is one beautiful card, but I can see how much time and effort went into it. Thank you for keepin on and sharing with us!

  32. Well, all that aggravating hard work paid off because this is gorgeous! But you’re right – saving all those bits and bobs is frustrating and time consuming putting them all in their correct spots. But time heals all wounds and you’ll soon forget what a terrible time that was putting it all together and you’ll give it another go! Thanks for sharing this with us at Freshly Made Sketches!

  33. Hahahahaha!! You know that if you say don’t I am going to have to try it now? It has come up AMAZING! Love it. I would have to view it as a puzzle then I may not get as frustrated. Well done – glad you took the time to do it.

  34. Brian, I certainly do admire your determination! Playing with those little bits of butterfly pieces would have my fingers, tweezers, and whatever else I was using to place those tiny pieces, full of glue. Me? I would have probably used a Vanilla base butterfly, made a mask from the detailed butterfly, then got out my various colored sponge daubers, and sponged away. But this is why YOU are inspiring to all of us. Way to go my friend….very beautiful! Bravo!

  35. I don’t have the time – but I think I HAVE to try this ! Thank you for sharing !

  36. I soooo “get” the need to finish what you started. Good thing you liked the final outcome. It’s a big drag when you don’t. This is beautiful!

  37. Awesome card!!!! Love it! 🙂

  38. Beautiful and that was a lot of work… not sure I have patience enough to glue it all together. So well done!

    • Lovely card, I sure I don’t have either the time or patience to CASE it though. Good work Brian and good luck to those who have a go at reproducing it.. Me I’ll just take your word for it……
      “Do Not Make This Card”
      I believe you, I won’t.

  39. All the more reasons to save Your clippings from the butterflies. Yes there is a use for those little pieces! Love it!!

  40. Have only just received my butterfly die (not sure why I haven’t ordered it before now) and was going to give this a try – might have to give it a miss now that I see your warning! All your effort was well and truly worth it though Brian as your butterfly is just stunning! Thanks for joining us at FMS this week!

  41. This card is beautiful! I love the butterfly, and would be so grateful to receive a card like this knowing how much patience it took. I was wondering if you could get a similar look by cutting strips of card stock of different colors, gluing them on a piece of lighter weight card stock, then cut it out with the outline thinlit. Afterward layering the detailed blackberry bliss thinlit on top? Does that make any sense?

  44. How did I miss these cards? The butterfly and all you are showing with the great colors are so beautiful. Butterfly is absolutely amazing, Brian! Thank you or sharing these again. As I look at dates on comments, that was the week my grand niece got married. : )
