That Thing You Did for FabFri72

Mindy Backes really threw us a curve ball with this week’s FabFriday color challenge.  FIVE COLORS!  Blackberry Bliss, Old Olive, Delightful Dijon, Tangelo Twist and Tip Top Taupe.  What!?  As I settled in to play with the colors, though, I fell in love.  These rich and regal colors are perfect for Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving projects – and that’s what I set out to do.  As I started to play with them, though, they took on a retro-feel.  That made it easy for me to incorporate this fun sentiment from That Thing You Do:That Thing You Do, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri71

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:FabFri 72Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • That Thing You Do.  This stamp set was not on my first order from the Annual Catalog.  Or my second.  Or my third.  I passed by it over and over before deciding I needed to own it.  It’s times like this I’m excited I “bit the bullet” and snatched it up.  I needed a “fun vintage saying” – and this one certainly fits the bill.  I accented the “The More You Know…” Public Service Announcement star with a Blackberry Bliss punch from my Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack.  Pow! • Inchies – Part One.  I started punching out a bunch of 1″ squares from the striped paper in my Designer Series Paper Stacks – the stripes are diagonal, but I cut them on a horizontal so that they’d each have a uniform look (I lined up my punch to grab a sliver of color on the top and bottom to make sure they were all the same).  I played with patterns for about an hour before I said, “Brian, enough is enough!  Just create a diagonal with the pieces and be done.”  I’m so happy with how that decision played out.  Here’s the panel of pieces before I cropped the strip: Creating a Basket-Weave Pattern with striped paper, Brian King
  • Inchies – Part Two.  I didn’t make you wait very long for part two of the Inchies Saga, did I?  To adhere the little squares to Whisper White cardstock, I covered the paper a Stampin’ Glue Stick (formerly called Anywhere Glue Stick) and then carefully placed my pieces, butting them up against each other.  It’s a similar process for gluing down tiny strips of paper to create a herringbone pattern (like this card I shared with you earlier this week).

Stamp Sets:  That Thing You Did  Papers:  Tangelo Twist, Blackberry Bliss, Designer Series Paper Stacks (Brights, 2014-2016 In Colors, 2015-2017 In Colors), Whisper White  Inks:  Tangelo Twist  Accessories:  Ovals Collection Framelits, 1″ Square punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to see the cards by the other Fab Friday design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.
