Happy Halloween with GDP004

Ooooh!  I just love this week’s challenge from the Global Design Project.  We aren’t asking you to make a project inspired by colors, a sketch or a theme.  We are asking you to make a card inspired by a card by one of our talented designers.  First, I will share my project.   Then, I will share the project that inspired by creation.  Here’s my card for GDP-004:

Wondrous Wreath, Sweet Hauntings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP004

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card – which features a gorgeous card by the very talented Louise Sharp:

GDP-004Inspiration from this beautiful card could be the stamp set, the color scheme, the layout, the sentiment, the overall feel of the card.  I simply used the stamp set as the launching board for my card.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Spooky Wreath.  If I didn’t tell you that I used a gorgeous wreath as the base for my card (and if you weren’t already so passionately familiar with the stamp set), you probably wouldn’t know that it was a wreath.  Stamped in black, the wreath takes on an entirely new feel.  With the sentiment in the center, the shapes appear to explode from the center – you’d never guess there’s a hole in the middle of the image (which, as I understand, is customary for wreaths). My imagination wants to believe that all the “leaves” collect in the center of the image – like a big, black blossom.

  • Explosion of Fun.  While I was creating this card, I cropped some Tangelo Twist and Hello Honey “dots” with the Cupcake Builder punch.  I intended to arrange them on the black wreath like berries on a wreath.  When I played around with the “dots” and extended them beyond the wreath, I was in love with the effect.  Please don’t think these bursts of colors were randomly placed on this card front – I strategically placed the dots, alternating colors and spacing them where I wanted them.  Lots of work, but I think the work paid off.
  • Happy Halloween.  I know that Halloween isn’t a big to-do in every part of the world – it’s not my favorite holiday, but I do love to create fun projects for the holiday.  And I love this little sentiment.  It’s sweet, simple and to-the-point.  If you tabbed through the Holiday Catalog, you might not find it.  I masked off part of one of the tags in the Sweet Hauntings stamp set to ink up just these two words.  If you missed my video about isolating images on a stamp, you can check it out here.

Stamp Sets:  Sweet Hauntings, Wondrous Wreath  Papers:  Tangelo Twist, Whisper White, Hello Honey, Basic Black  Inks:  Archival Basic Black  Accessories:  1-1/4″ Circle punch, Cupcake Builder punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to The Global Design Project site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.  What a wonderful inspiration from Louise’s card!

  9. Good Morning Brian:

So great to see a Halloween card without bats or witches or goblins. I do sent Halloween cards to friends and family and always have a difficult time making them for adults because using the “regular” symbols makes them seem somewhat juvenile. I end up using pumpkins on them so using a wreath would be a wonderful change. I won’t be casing your card but do so want to thank you for putting ideas into my head for a nice adult kind of card. Your card is gorgeous and I love that you get versatility out of every stamp set. You are brilliant!

  10. What a lovely twist on a Halloween card, no ghost or spooks here, just a fabulous, beautiful and colorful wreath, with the dots perfectly distributed, there is not an ounce of randomness here!!!!! 😉
