Among the Branches for FabFri76

Since it first arrived on my doorstep a couple of months ago, I’ve been excited to use the Night of Navy snowflakes paper from the Season of Cheer Designer Series Paper.  Love it!  Distressed and faded in parts, I wasn’t sure how I’d use it – I just knew I wanted to play around with it.  This week’s Fab Friday sketch challenge gave me the opportunity to play around with this great paper to make this card:

And here’s Mindy Backes’ sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Season of Cheer.  I’ve really made good use of the Season of Cheer Designer Series Paper this season.  While Home for Christmas Designer Series Paper gives that classic, old-time feel and Winter Wonderland Specialty Designer Series Paper offers a bold, modern look, Season of Cheer blends the classic images (holly, Christmas trees, Christmas lights) with a fresh water colored look.  The colors are great, and many of the images are great even outside the Christmas season.

  • Let it Go, Let it Go.  Because this card features snowflakes, you might think my “let it go” reference is to a Disney film from last year.  Nope.  🙂  When I decided to crop out a large circle of the darkly shaded paper to included over this sheet of pale pattern, I really wanted the patterns to be seamless.  I LOVE when patterns match up perfectly.  It wasn’t “in the cards” for me this time, so I decided to go with it.  I am quite happy with how it turned out.
  • Layered Circles.  The largest circle of Designer Series Paper is cropped from the Circles Collection Framelits.  It provides a large platform for the two remaining layers of circles.  When I cropped the sentiment (it’s a negative image that was stamped with Versamark on Night of Navy cardstock and covered with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder) with a Circles Collection Framelit, I needed something to encircle it.  Because the white embossing powder didn’t match up perfectly with Whisper White Cardstock, I decided to add a soft aura around the circle with a 2-1/2″ piece of Vellum Cardstock.

Stamp Sets:  Among the Branches  Papers:  Night of Navy, Season of Cheer Designer Series Paper, Vellum Cardstock  Accessories:  White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Circles Collection Framelits, 2-1/2″ Circle punch, Washi Label punch, Basic Jewel Pearls, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to the Fab Friday Challenge site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Lovely card — how did you darken the background of the snowflake paper without also coloring the snowflakes?

    • Thanks, Gerry. The paper has a distressed appeal to it – some areas of the 12″ x 12″ page are darker than others. I cropped the large circle from a part of the paper that was darker than the piece underneath. No tricks here. 🙂

  2. My mom engrained in me as a little girl that anytime I am buying clothes to check to see that the patterns matched. I too love it when they match on a card. Letting it go on this card is totally fine. snowflakes fall so randomly; it’s ok that they don’t line up 🙂

  3. Flashing those “pearly whites” in all the right places for this sketch. Beautiful how this paper plays up the shades of blue!

  4. Gorgeous card…bright but peaceful at the same time!

  5. The snowflakes are really pretty with the way you’ve designed this card. I’m thinking that there are other papers that this would work with as well but maybe not as attractive as the snowflakes. Thanks for sharing Brian!

  6. Hi Brian:

That vellum circle was perfect to show off the center two circles! Genius!. Love this card and with a different message would be perfect for Hanukkah! Blue, white and a bit of silver are what I use for all my Hanukkah cards. Have yourself a Fantastic Friday!

  7. Beautiful card, Brian. If you hadn’t mentioned the snowflakes matching up, I would never have picked up on it. I agree with Kelly that it’s fine they don’t exactly match. Great work. I love all the blues.

  8. Great card and lots of tips. So pretty reminds me of Maine! Great job, young man!

  9. Great take on the sketch. Love the cool ( haha) array of blue. Perfect.

  10. Sweet! Love this card. Had to keep scrolling up to see the few things you were talking about…ie…the snowflake match up or not…didn’t even notice till you mentioned it, too! My question is…how did you do the negative image on the sentiment…totally puzzled on that one and lastly…it all looks matched in the photo, didn’t noticed any shading differences…guess the transition with the vellum worked!!! Thank you so much for sharing…I love this card! I think I am in love with Navy Blue, White, and Silver for Christmas! I know you didn’t use Silver, but I may, to make the card my own!!!!!

    • Thanks, Cheryl. The stamp has the words carved out, so the ink shows up on the negative space. I inked the negative space with Versamark and covered it with White Stampin’ Emboss powder on Night of Navy paper. The paper has various shades of blue on it – one corner has more dark blue than the other – it’s not a consistent shade of blue throughout. If you click on the picture of the paper above, you can see more pictures in the online store. Hope that makes sense.

  11. Great card just like walking in a winter wonderland! I loved how you used the negative for the sentiment using the white embossing powder! That is just so cool! We all know that there is not a perfect snowflake and no two are alike so NO WORRIES if they didn’t line up! I agree with Grace and I just might have to make this as a model for my Jewish friends. The DP is just so pretty! Thanks Brian!

  12. Pretty and serene . Love the vellum addition . I did not realize that that dsp was that dark although you say it is shaded /distressed it does not look that way in the catalog ! WOW ! So if you read the colors below the picture …there it is …Night Of Navy ! That is why it helps to see the products being used . Thank you !

  13. Oh I love this!!! This has been a favorite paper of mine 🙂 I will be copying this one!!

  14. Awesome as always Brain. It’s perfect for the dsp you used.

  15. Just lovely Brian, the Vellum really softens this DSP, love all the layers and the pearls are a very elegant detail.

  16. Only you would think of adding a snippet of vellum to pop up that center. This is an amazing card, Brian. I was wondering what to do with this paper because although I love it too, I wasn’t getting any vibes with it. Now I will. Thanks for sharing … great card.

  17. Love the way the layers of color are used on your card Brian! TFS!
