CASEing Connie Collins with Going Global for GDP020

Connie Collins is one of the most talented people I know – everything she makes and shares on Constantly Stamping is kissed with perfection.  Connie, a two-time Stampin’ Up! Artisan, makes clean projects with a touch of shabby chic – at least that’s how I’d describe them.  It’s been almost a year since she and I sat next to each other in the Orlando airport after Stampin’ Up!’s Leadership Conference.  When we started chatting, I was unaware of who I was talking to (I’ll talk to just about anyone) – I was tickled to find out I was talking with THE Connie Collins.  Here’s quick proof that we are best friends (we were sitting with Jason Wright who was keynote speaker at the event):

Connie Collins I was excited when I saw that a CASE Connie Collins challenge was scheduled for Global Design Project.  To CASE (Copy and Share Everything) is to find inspiration in someone else’s work and then make it your own – the sketch, the colors, the layout, the theme, the images – and then make it your own.  What a fun way to find inspiration – from a project by another artist – and to pay tribute to their work!  Connie’s card inspired me to make this clean-and-simple (but still very layered) card:

Going Global, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP020And here’s the banner with Connie’s project that inspired my card:GDP020Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Inspiration.  The horizontal stripes are the most obvious element I CASE’d from Connie’s card.  I used the beautifully striped page from Farmer’s Market Designer Series Paper.  I’ve used that several times – I just love it – and it seemed an appropriate base for my card today.  I was also inspired by the “love theme” of her card, the placement of the central image and the red heart.  This “you mean the world to me” sentiment from Going Global might as well say “I love you,” right?  Side-by-side, my card is a different card, but it’s easy to see where the inspiration is found.
  • Glossy Globe.  I’ve tried to use this globe from Going Global several times but haven’t been happy with how it looks in the projects I’m creating.  The globe either stands out too much or fades into the background.  For this card, I found the balance I was looking for.  I stamped this globe in VersaMark on Pool Party cardstock and heat embossed it with Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder and cropped it with a Circles Collection Framelit.  Framed with a 2″ Circle punch of Basic Black cardstock, I had the perfect image I wanted for this tall and thin card – the globe is a statement piece without being the focal point.

  • Punch and Framelits Layering.  The base of this card is 3-3/4″ x 5-1/2″ – I love to play around with “differently shaped” cards – but I am super-jazzed about finding layering combinations that work for me.  The combination of shapes I used here won’t work ver every situation, but they worked well for me on this card.  Here are the layers I used on the top panel of this card, including the placement of Stampin’ Dimensionals:
    • Very Vanilla – 2-1/2″ Circle punch
    • Stampin’ Dimensionals
    • Basic Black – 2″ Circle punch
    • Pool Party – Circles Collection Framelit
    • Stampin’ Dimensionals
    • Basic Black – Washi Label punch
    • Very Vanilla – Large Oval punch
    • Cherry Cobbler – Owl Builder punch (heart)
