Grateful Bunch for GDP021

This week’s Global Design Project challenges features a tremendous balance of colors:  Bermuda Bay, Melon Mambo and Wisteria Wonder.  While I love the brightness that Bermuda Bay and Melon Mambo bring to this threesome of colors, I was really feeling the love from Wisteria Wonder when I sat down to make my card.  I don’t use her as often as I should, so I wanted to give her the spotlight.  Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Grateful Bunch.  I won’t shy away from a flower print or design, but you don’t see me making a lot of cards that require me to arrange flowers.  I’m just not good at layering flowers in an appealing way (and I’m not ashamed to admit it).  Still, I was drawn to Grateful Bunch, a photopolymer stamp set in Stampin’ Up!’s Occasions Catalog, because of the awesome sentiments.  I’m certain I’ll use these flowers at some point (I bought the bundle with the punch), but these sentiments make me very happy.

  • Paper Piecing.  From the moment I first saw Vivid Vases, I knew it was the perfect stamp set for paper piecing.  I stamped the image of the vase and flowers on the Whisper White cardstock base.  I then stamped the same image on a piece of striped paper from Have a Cuppa Designer Series Paper Stack – the vase pulls from the striped image on the bottom layer of the card.  I snipped out the vase and glued it on top of the one I had stamped on white.  So simple – with such an amazing impact.  If you missed my paper piecing video, you can see it here.Grateful Bunch, Vivid Vases, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP021
  • Pulling in the Bright Colors.  Yes, it’s true.  I shied away from this color combination a bit.  The Wisteria Wonder played with my heartstrings, so I showcased it a front-and-center.  The other colors are definitely there, though.  🙂  The thin stripes in the background include all three colors in this challenge (and one stripe of Basic Gray).  Since I ultimately used this paper on the vase (it IS the focal point, after all), I feel I have appropriately captured this gorgeous combination of colors.  Yay!

I hope you’ll pop over to the Global Design Project site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.  It’s a fun one!

  7. Hi Brian, the first thing that struck me about this card was its brightness in colors. Very soothing. I love, love, love the use of only one vase and flower. I have never seen anyone use just one, great idea!!
    🙂

  8. Wow, Brian you really have an eye for tying your card together. I would have never thought to round the corners on the bottom of the top mat.
From top to bottom this is a beautiful card.

  9. Oh, that’s a sweetheart of a card. Love the isolated and paper snipped vase.

  10. Great card. I’ll have to pop over to GDP and give it a try.
    Thanks!

  11. Oh Brian – this card is just plain gorgeous. I love the softness of Wisteria Wonder and I also love monochromatic cards. I realize this card doesn’t qualify as monochromatic but the little bit of color from the DSP is just enough. So elegant, so soft, so beautiful!

  12. I am not a big fan of Wisteria Wonder because it is so muted /grey in hue BUT…. you really bring it home with your card . I like the subtle way the other two colors are brought into the picture without overpowering the lavender .
    Pretty card !

  13. Really nice card, Brian. It is simple but elegant and I love how you fussy cut the vase in the DSP to bring it all together. Very nice.

  14. Gorgeous card, Brian. Wisteria Wonder is so very pretty-a WOW! What a great way to get other colors in another master piece. Corners are perfect!
    Love it!

  15. This is why I sometimes refer to you as the King of Matting! Love all the layers you used here and the DSP mix!

  16. Oh,,,,,and LOVE THE PURPLE!

  17. Wisteria Wonder has stolen my heart too. It may have been the first Stampin’ Up ink pad I bought. I’m always happy to see it in each annual catalog! There used to be a white dotted DSP with a wisteria background that I absolutely loved. I hope it comes back someday as I have only a bitty scrap of it that I just can’t part with.
    Love your card (as always)!

  18. This card really showcases wisteria wonder brilliantly. I love tone on tone cards with a touch of brightness somewhere, like your vase. It’s amazing how many techniques went into this card. Lovely!

  19. I love the purple too! And I love how you sneaked in the other 2 colors! Great card Brian.

  20. Great layout and implementation. Like it a lot!

  21. At first I thought you cheated and did not use all the colors – sneaky way to get that pink in there Brian! Looks great!

  22. Gorgeous card, Brian! I love the “softness” with just a touch of color! Nicely done!

  23. We tend to forget that combining colours doesn’t mean that every colour has to take the forefront! Great card Brian, and a great interpretation of you colour combo. xx

  24. Two for two Brian! You make it look so easy!

  25. I totally love how you made just one colour the star of the show, yet the others are still there too. You are the Man!
