BIG NEWS for FabFri81

Mindy Backes created a fun Fab Friday sketch for us this week that includes several elements I don’t usually embrace (they just aren’t in my wheelhouse) – banners and buttons.  Still, I enjoyed working with them and loved making them work for me.  Mindy’s challenge allowed me to delve into even more uncomfortable territory, which I loved.  More on that later.  Let’s start with my card:

And here’s the banner for this week’s Fab Friday sketch challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • BIG NEWS – You’re Awesome.  I’m a huge fan of the Big News stamp set – such fun sentiments for all occasions.  I also love the Words of Truth stamp set – so many great sentiments for kids or anyone you want to say “woo hoo” to.  Put them together, and you’ve got a showpiece worthy of this card front.

  • Banners, Buttons and Doilies.  Oh, My!  I have nothing against the elements at all – people make some gorgeous project with banners, buttons and doilies.  They just aren’t my go-to elements for clean and simple cards.  I exaggerated the size of my banners (cropped from Typeset Specialty Designer Series Paper and Timeless Elegance Designer Series Paper), making them bigger than Mindy’s sketch.  Rather than directly copy the doily, I added a fringed piece of Typeset Specialty Designer Series Paper – a fun element that I wouldn’t have included had the power of suggestion not been there from Mindy.  Instead of a button or embellishment, I added an oblong heart from the Owl Builder Punch – I just love that heart.Big News, Words of Truth, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri81
  • A Neutral Color Combination.  Once I set my heart on using the Typeset Specialty Designer Series Paper, I knew I’d be using a lot of Basic Black and Very Vanilla.  It all came together, though, with the addition of Crumb Cake.  Yipes!  That made my heart so happy.  If you like this combination, too, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 1. Great match-up on the sentiment! Brian I visualize you sitting at a table with all your sentiments spread out as if you were playing scrabble. Then matching up the coolest phrases. Thank you for helping us get more bang for our bucks, in creating more sentiments.

  2. Love the newsprint (especially the fluttery piece) and “scholarly” feel!

    • Thanks! The fluttery piece was my last add – notice that is says “handsomely” at the bottom? That was not by design – noticed it when I was taking my picture. 🙂

  3. You made my heart so happy—-again!!! You are so clever with putting phrases from different stamp sets together in such wonderful ways!!! Great colors, so creative!!! You rock!!!❤️❤️❤️

  4. Great card, Brian. I love all the elements you used. I’m not a big fan of subdued colors. I’m into brighter colors, but your combination works beautifully. It is encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone. We all need that nudge occasionally. Thanks for the inspiration.

  5. Loved the card Brian. It is so clean and so bold. The newsprint and your colors are great but love the great big banner idea! The final point was the fringe instead of a doily – really like it!! Great!

  6. Brian, you inspired me to enter the Pals Paper Arts this week, and you may have just inspired me to try another challenge! Thank you for sharing another great card. I like that little newsprint fringe!

  7. Brian, love the Big News stamp set but never think to pair it with something else like Words of Truth. Always love that I get a daily dose of inspiration from you!

  8. WOWser on today’s card Brian. I’m not one for subdued colors on my cards either but this one is striking and oh so masculine. I just love it. We need to keep having you step outside your comfort zone if these are the kinds of cards you come up with! What next? Glitter? LOL You know I’m just teasing.

  9. This card is all kinds of AWESOME! The little snippet with the fringe is so fun.

  10. You did wonderful my friend ,I love it !!
    Hugs Frenchie,
