Dawn Tidd is the Featured Designer this week at Pals Paper Arts. She has created a sweet and simple sketch that can be used for any type of card. I used it to make a sweet and simple sympathy card using stamps from three floral stamp sets in Stampin’ UP!’s Occasions Catalog. So happy to have that starter-inspiration from Dawn! Here’s my card:
And here’s the banner for Dawn’s challenge that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Three Floral Stamp Sets. I used three floral stamp sets to make this understated, and rather non-floral, card. Can you guess which three I used? Here’s a hint – they call came from Stampin’ Up!’s Occasions Catalog. Because I know you like a good game, I’m going to add some scroll lines before I start revealing the answers – scroll down if you want to see which sets I used.

- Faux Band. I tried ribbon and cardstock to add the “band” element from Dawn’s sketch, but nothing seemed to work for me on this striped paper. That’s when it occurred to me that maybe – just maybe – I should stamp that element onto my card. I used the string of dots from Helping Me Grow (it’s photopolymer, so that was easy!) to stamp six strands of dots – their connecting point is hidden beneath the circles.
- Color Combination. These muted colors are perfect for a sympathy card. They aren’t too bright, but also aren’t too drab. The colors were snatched right out of the Going Places Designer Series Paper – a perfect place to start when looking for color combination that “work.” If you like this combination, too, feel free to save this:
Stamp Sets: Birthday Blooms, Rose Wonder, Helping Me Grow Papers: Going Places, Lost Lagoon, Sahara Sand, Very Vanilla Inks: Sahara Sand, Lost Lagoon Accessories: 2-1/2″ Circle punch, Circles Collection Framelits, Stampin’ Dimensionals
I hope you’ll pop over to the Pals Paper Arts site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.
Thanks for stopping by today!
Brian
Simple and sweet . I like the small flower behind the sentiment a lot .
You are right that this could be one of the kind of cards that you could keep a couple on hand …..just don`t add the greeting until you need it .
Nice color combo also .
Thanks, Sonny! I was really happy with the mix of colors. So sweet. Glad you liked the card.
Lovely card Brian and there’s those layered circles again – must give it a try ? love your “ribbon”
Thanks, Leonie! <3
Sweet! And I love the triling dots across the center!
Thanks, Linda! I was happy with the trill of dots, too. 🙂
That’s trailing…..not trilling…..I don’t think they are singing…..lol….
Ahh! Now I understand. 🙂
It is really helpful that you show the card with associated stamp set, DSP etc..listed in the boxes! Enjoy your projects!! Thanks!!
Love the stamped image with the stripe. Sweet & simple indeed!
Thanks so much, Mary! <3
Wow, I really like this card. Great tip with the flower behind the greeting.
If you didn’t say, I would have had to scan the catalog looking for those dots, totally over looked them, they add a nice touch.
Thanks, Katrina! I am glad I had that set sitting on my desk when I needed them. 🙂 I would have, otherwise, missed them too.
Great take on the sketch. It’s simple, sweet and versatile. I love how you used the dots to make the band…very creative.
Thanks, HJ! A solid band would have detracted from the overall look of the card. Glad you liked it.
Brian that’s a lovely card , I think that one of the stamp sets I didn’t get ,
(Help me grow ) I hope I’m not to late ,
Tfs , I always have a hard time making these kind of cards ,
Have a wonderful weekend
Hugs Frenchie
Thanks, Frenchie! Helping Me Grow still has two months left in it – order away! 🙂
Hi Brian:
Sympathy cards are the hardest to make but you have done a fabulous job with this one. Simple and to the point. The phrase is one I write on my cards all the time. I should probably get this stamp set.
Thanks for a perfect card as always.
Grace – I know where you can buy this stamp set. 🙂 It’s filled with great sentiments. You’ll like it. 🙂 Thanks!
So clever with the simple dots on the striped paper. Great embelishment.
Thanks, Sharon. I was pretty happy when I decided on them.
Thanks Brian for a great card layout. I am using them to send to people going through cancer treatments. Unfortunately there are too many of those right now. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much, Connie! What a wonderful show of support and love for those friends!
Simple, yet elegant enough for a gorgeous sympathy card. I love the rows of open dots across the center, it’s just enough. Thanks so much for playing along with my sketch at the PPA this week, Brian!
Love your sketch, Dawn! Glad you like my card!
I really like this card Brian. It has an understated quality that I think this type of card should have. I think it really works with Dawn’s design.
Thanks, Robbye! I think understated is important on these cards, too. Glad you liked it. <3
Love the row of dots instead of a ribbon or strip of paper. Very clever!
Thanks! Glad you like them. <3
Very nice, Brian, colors are great , stripe of circles, very clever. Soft and peaceful for a Sympathy card. Great!
Thanks, Di! I appreciate your kind words.
Such a sensitive sympathy card Brian. I really like it. And you clever thing, pulling the colours from the Going Global DSP! xoxo
Perfect as always, Brian! The subtle colors and clean design will certainly bring peace to the recipient. Thanks for playing with the Sketch Team!
You are the king! What a great card and what a great card to keep on hand for those just in case moments. Way to rock the sketch and way to once again showcase such amazing clean and simple cards!
