Birthday Banners in Beautiful Blues

On Tuesday, I shared a bright and cheery “sunshine is on the way” card that I completed with my local stamp club.  If you missed that card, you can see it here.  Today I’m featuring another card we made last weekend – along with some lessons learned that I didn’t learn until after I’d begun instructing my group how to create their project.  Here’s the card we made:

Birthday Banners, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • That Sentiment!  Who wouldn’t adore this fun card?  I love the sentiment – “Time to put out this tiny fire while we sing you a song!” It still brings a smile to my face, and I’ve been looking at it and working with it for a while.  Just imagine the guffaw it will bring to someone who’s never seen it!  The sentiment and banner and candle and flame are all from a stamp set called Birthday Banners – a must-have.  The banners coordinate with the Bunch of Banners dies and can be used as a starting point for all types of card.  The tiny candle is stamped twice here – the imperfect intersection is hidden beneath the banner.

  • No – Don’t Follow My Lead.  When I was pulling together my card, I stamped the banner the way it’s shown with the stamp set in the catalog (page 15) – and not the way it’s shown on the sample above it.  I was disappointed with how the curves in the words didn’t exactly match up with the curves in the banner.  THAT’S BECAUSE I HAD MY BANNER UPSIDE DOWN.  If you want the words to line up perfectly, the flip in the banner (that you see just below “while” in my card above) needs to be the top, right side of the image.  I decided to not change it – all the cards my club members made were perfect because they figured out that I had it positioned wrong.  Phew!Birthday Banners, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Color Combination.  I adore a blue and aqua combination – while it definitely fits the “criteria for a guy card,” this card is perfect for a woman, too.  I paired the new Dapper Denim with Bermuda Bay and a touch of Crushed Curry to make this fun card.  If you like this combination, too, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 1. What a happy card! I’m singing along with it. Fabulous layering, Brian, as always!

  2. Don’t have any of the new stamp sets yet. But this one I like. What size is the layers. 51/2 by 4 1/4 then ? then ? looks like 1/8 in between the larger ones. Great clean card.

  3. Great card!!! Thanks so much for the tip about the banner. I have seen it with offset letters before and it bothered me! I am a retired cartographer, making maps, and crooked letters drive me nuts!!!

  4. Absolutely the perfect way to use this stamp set and banner die. My birthday is Nov. 29. thanks!

  5. A beautiful birthday card, Brian, upside down banner and all! My birthday is Nov. 4, thank you! 🙂

  6. Love this card! Not a color combo I would ever think to use together but by limiting the use of the Crushed Curry to the flame you allowed the blues to take center stage! Just beautiful. I would never have known about your itty bitty blooper had you not told me. See, even your tiny mistakes come out beautifully! LOL

  7. LOL, love this card and your funny Saturday morning caveat!

  8. Oooo,oh loving it , my friend, it’s perfect!!

  9. Fun card today. Love the color combination. You always have great color in your cards. I too have found that if you want to learn something well, teach it to another. Hope your weekend goes well!

  10. I love the sentiment (tiny fire) on your card with only one candle! lol I agree it will make the recipient smile for sure. Your layering is always amazing and I love your tips. Have a great weekend.

  11. Thank you for the warning about positioning that beautiful banner .
This card is really cute and it would be fun to get this in your mailbox !!
Since there are some November shout outs I may as well join in ….my BD is on November 16th ! Just saying ……

  12. This card makes me wish I was born in July so I could drop HUGE hints to send it to me. But alas, my birthday’s not until 2017. I debated on whether or not to get the Banners bundle and decided to wait. Great job Brian (I didn’t even notice the upside down thing)

  13. I’m super late, been so busy with my grandkiddos, beautiful weather today so we went to the pool and then, fixed supper for them.
But I didn’t want to go to sleep without telling you how much I love this card, the color combination is so fresh and beautiful and, if you wouldn’t have mentioned the upside down banner, I wouldn’t have noticed.
Upside down or not, this card is fabulous.
    Hugs.

  14. Super cute card, Brian! I love the colors and that sentiment is awesome.

  15. I have used this stamp set a couple times already and thought that the words didn’t quite fit correctly. Now I know why!! Thanks for the tip. Off to make another card. I do love this sentiment and lots of people will be getting birthday cards this year with it!!
