A Little Christmas Spirit for GDP #054

This week’s Global Design Project sketch offers a large banner.  Simple.  With so many options available to me, I could have made almost any kind of card.  I had a cropped Detailed Santa Thinlits image sitting on my table so I challenged myself to make that work.  Where to begin?  Here’s the card I came up with for this week’s challenge:

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:gdp054Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Detailed Santa Thinlits Die.  I’m not quite sure why this isn’t the most popular item in Stampin’ Up!’s 2016 Holiday Catalog.  I absolutely love the beautiful detail in Santa’s face and beard.  The Thinlits image is very versatile, too – you can decorate it to be fun and cute (with “ho ho ho” and “from the North Pole”) or sophisticated and beautiful (with glimmer paper and a beautiful sentiment about the spirit of Christmas).  I chose the second way.  Inspired by a project on the front of this year’s Holiday Catalog, I trimmed the sides of the die away to create a banner that I glued onto a Thick Whisper White Panel.  Here’s a look at the entire die:

  • But Wait!  Did you notice that my Santa is facing a different direction than all the others you’ve seen?  Because I cropped Mr. Claus from Red Glimmer Paper – that’s right, I used Glimmer Paper – I cropped him from the backside of the paper.  The flat, solid surface of Glimmer Paper is much easier to cut into than the gritty, glittery piece?  When turned over, Santa’s face is positioned on the right side of the tag vs. the left.  Cool, huh?  The photo above doesn’t capture this shimmer and shine of the cropped Santa – this picture gives you a better look:Detailed Santa Thinlits Dies, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Keep it Classy!  As I mentioned above, this Thinlits Die can be fun or classy.  The glitter shine of the die could have worked either way, too, so I relied on the colors and surroundings to keep it classy.  I used two stamps from the Star of Light to anchor this banner to the card (and to incorporate the elements in the sketch) and to add a beautiful sentiment that works well with this sparkly Santa.  The spray of stars reminds us of the magical nature of this altruistic elf, and the sentiment reminds us of the joy he brings to children all over the world.

  1. Oh my stars & garters! Brian are you ok??? Using glimmer paper is such a shock I am not sure that the world is still spinning! Fun card even if my heart has been weakened!

  2. Classy is right! I think I have to have the Stars of Light set!

  3. So Brian – have you been running a fever? Had a lot of indigestion? Are you lacking in sleep? You just shocked me with the second card with glitter (yes, I know it was glitter paper but glitter none the less). I may have to call Mary to check up on you! LOL Either that or you are finally realizing what you have been missing by not using glitter.

Your card is spectacular. The saying is just perfect and I am sooooooooo proud of you for delving into the world of sparkle.

  4. Really cute card today, Brian. I love how you switched it by using the backside of the glimmer paper. I also like how you used the “swoosh” of stars behind it. Yes, indeed, it is classy!

  5. You can never have too much glitter Brian! Awesome card!

  6. All that glitters must be santa! Love the extra sparkle!

  7. The Glimmer Paper was the first thing I noticed! Working outside your comfort zone! Way to go, Brian!
