Bundle of Joy for GDP#057

The colors for this week’s Global Design Project challenge – Rich Razzleberry, Mint Macaron and Blushing Bride – are soft and sweet.  The purple is bright and bold, while the pink and green are soft as can be.  While the colors directed me right to a floral motif, I needed a card for a baby girl – a perfect starting point!  Here’s my card:

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

  • Sunshine Sayings Bundle.  The Sunshine Sayings bundle is a must-have bundle.  The sentiments in the stamp set are great, but the accompanying Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies are the best!  I’d love to purchase the dictionary of words in this script so that I can crank out every card with the dies.  They are thin enough to be cool but thick enough to handle and glue down easily.  Love, congrats, sunshine and hope come with the bundle – such a versatile collection in a gorgeous font, but I want more.  Can we please petition to add to this collection?  I’m going to cross my fingers for more – in the meantime here’s (what I considered to be) the starter kit for the dictionary of dies that I’m sure we’ll see since I’ve kindly requested it.  🙂

  • Painting the Onesie.  I really wanted a soft watercolored look on this adorable onesie, and there are a lot of ways I could have achieved that look.  I played with four or five different options before arriving on the one I loved.  Here’s what I did to create the onesie:
    • I inked up the Watercolor Wash background stamp with Blushing Bride ink.
    • I stamped it off once on a piece of scrap paper to reduce the intensity of the ink color.
    • I stamped it on watercolor paper.
    • I used the moist brush of an AquaPainter to further wash out the watercolored effect.
    • Once it dried, I cropped the onesie with the Baby’s First Framelits Dies.
    • I stamped “Bundle of” from Sunshine Sayings in the center of the onesie.
    • I smiled at how sweet it looks.
  • Layering the Background.  Without this color challenge, there’s a slim chance I would have ever added this green panel behind the ovals.  Either way, it adds a nice, subtle pattern to the card.  I pieced two pieces of cardstock together for the backdrop of this card – I placed the darkest color on the bottom to add weight to the base of the card.  I added three Subtles Enamel Shapes (Blushing Bride) to add a bit of glossy texture to the card.  The bold background allows the focus to be on the small elements that are stacked inside the ovals.Sunshine Sayings, Baby's First Framelits, Sunshine Wishes Thinlits, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

  1. Hi Brian, I think this is a great use of these colors. The card is great! The hardest part is waiting for the watercolor to dry.
    How was your weekend?
    🙂

  2. Wow . . . I would have thought the color combination would be beautiful but challenging. You did a beautiful job. I adore the “love” across the onesie!

  3. I thought the jolt of that RR would be too much for a baby girl ,but actually it looks very new and modern . I agree that it would be great to have a bunch of words to die cut ….. there are non SU ones out there . I am hoping SU will have some more coming .
Cute cute card ….love that onesie !

  4. I agree with Sonny, who knew that RR would work for a baby card…you did ?. Thanks Brian for helping us think outside the box.

  5. What a sweet card Brian. Almost makes me wish I had someone to send it to. I love babies and our family seems to be lacking in them these days. All the babies have grown up! LOL The card is beautiful and I’m sure will be received with much gratitude. I thought this was a tough color combo but you managed to pull it off with a touch of class.

  6. So, so cute, Brian! Love it.

  7. What a fun background ! Very easy and still very pretty, tfs !

  8. <3 You ALWAYS pass the "squint" test!

  9. I agree regarding adding to this collection of words – thank goodness you’ve asked, it’s sure to happen now!
A gorgeous baby girl card and knew you create something awesome for this color challenge! xo

  10. Absolutely loving the solid blocks of colour on this super cute Onsie card this week Brian. Bold and delicious!

  11. Love the contrast between the soft watercolour onesie and the blocks of colour … and love that I am not the only one that works on five different options! 😉 xx

  12. What an adorable gift for new parents! So cute! You can have double the fun if someone had twins! I really liked your colors and your wording! I wording have thought to pick words from different sets. I honestly don’t know why? I think about it!
