You Make Me Happy for GDP#058

In my post on Friday, I shared that I can be stubborn.  After my deeply personal admission, not one person commented with a gasp and a “certainly that can’t be true!” so I’m left to believe you must already know it to be true.  All that said, you won’t disbelieve me when I tell you I’ve tried many, many, many times (unsuccessfully) to use one of the sweet-and-simple pages from Affectionately Your Specialty Designer Series Paper.  I’ve come back to it over and over again – with it’s sweet, tiny flowers – but I haven’t been happy with the outcome until today.  I showcased this page on today’s card for the Global Design Project sketch.  Yay!  Here’s my card:

Crazy About You, Suite Seasons, Affectionately Yours, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP058And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:GDP#058Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Affectionately Yours.  I adore the prints in the Affectionately Yours Specialty Designer Series Paper pack of papers.  Not only are the colors bright and beautiful, but the patterns vary from teeny-tiny, to large-and-bold.  I love how the Stampin’ Up! designers pulled Crumb Cake into many of the pages – including one of the copper-embossed pages in the pack.  The paper I used on this card features tiny flowers in a variety of colors.  The bold, squared elements on top of the paper separate the sentiment panel from the detailed paper.  These patterns are a great starting point for any cheerful, sweet card.

  • Building the Sentiment.  You can search all through the catalogs and you won’t find a single sentiment I used on this card.  To create this “you make me happy” sentiment, a combination of print font and a beautiful script, I pulled a sentiment from Crazy About You (from Stampin’ Up!’s Annual Catalog) and masked off a sentiment from Suite Seasons (from Stampin’ Up!’s Holiday Catalog).  Crazy About You, Suite Seasons, Affectionately Yours, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP058I’ve used Crazy About You far more often than I ever dreamed I would – it’s one of the few sets available in clear-mount, wood-mount and photopolymer.  Just look at the selection of words available in this set:

I masked off the top of the “Merry Everything, Happy Always” and inked up the word “happy” with Watermelon Wonder.  I love the font used with this word – it’s such a beautiful contrast to the all-caps, printed font of “you make me.”

  • Color Combination.  The colors I used on this card are all pulled from this fun piece of paper.  Crumb Cake is a beautiful, neutral base for a rich Night of Navy and bright Watermelon Wonder.  Together, they are a wonderful balance of powerful, intense colors.  If you feel inspired to create with these colors, please save this: Stampin' Up! I love how you combined the sentiment from Suite Seasons (with that borgeous font) with Crazy About You to make an adorable sentiment for year round! The sentiment, tilted panels, colors, and cute little flowers combine to make a perfect cheerful, happy card.

I totally understand what you mean about struggling to come up with a card that fits a particular paper. I’ve had that same experience with some of the papers from Affectionately Yours, too. They are just so pretty, I want to make sure to do them justice! You have definitely done this paper justice today. 🙂

  5. I took your admission that you are stubborn as a good thing. If you were not, your fab card last Friday might not have been made.
I love today’s card, also. The colors are great and I like your interpretation of the sketch.

  6. I think using the two different fonts is what made you “happy” about this design, it toned down the “cuteness” of the paper, and made it unique!

  7. Your “stubbornness” is what make your cards work!

  8. The neutral background really makes the colors in the DSP pop. Great card Brian.
