A Gorgeous Batik Technique with Jennifer Spiller

You are in for quite a treat today!  Today I’m sharing a project by my super-talented team member and friend, Jennifer Spiller who frequently shares her artwork on her Westside Paper Creations blog. Jennifer is an amazing artist, and I adore her enthusiasm for making beautiful things with paper and ink.  This picture of Jennifer shows her sweet spirit and her willingness to roll up her sleeves and get inky.

Its always a good time for ink

I asked Jennifer to create something pretty I could share on my blog – and that she could share at the same time.  Here’s what she sent me:

Flirty Flowers, Painted Harvest, Stampin' Up!, by Jennifer SpillerHow absolutely gorgeous is that?!  Jennifer’s project features a Faux Batik technique that is perfectly showcased here.  She harnessed a gorgeous mix of colors, patterns and textures to create this beautiful card.  I’m going to share a little bit about the elements of the card, but you’re going to want to click over to Jennifer’s blog to see her video on how she executed this technique.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • New Products.  Jennifer’s card features three new products – two from the new Annual Catalog and one from the upcoming Holiday Catalog.  Can you name all three?  Of course you can!  In case you are shy or unwilling to play along (I know you’re tired because you work hard, and this is your outlet to relax…), I’m going to show you all three of them.  🙂  The sweet silhouette of the flowers is from a new Flirty Flowers stamp.  What a sweet collection of flowers that can be an accent or a focal point!

To create a gorgeous backdrop for the sweet flower, Jennifer showcases the new Pinewood Planks Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder – this deep-cutting folder creates quite a beautiful texture.

The sentiment on Jennifer’s card is from Painted Harvest, a new Fall-themed set in the Holiday Catalog.  You are certainly going to want this set to be at the top of your wish list from this upcoming catalog (live September 1).  Love!

  • Sweet Layers.  I love the sweet layers on Jennifer’s card!  Because of the thin frames on her card, there are actually FIVE layers of cardstock on this sweet-and-simple card.  If you count the layers of gold flaking (you can find gold flaking in most craft stores or online), there are SIX layers.  That’s a big win to me – when you can pile on the layers and still have a sweet, clean look.  Nice!
  • Rich Colors.  While Jennifer’s project features a touch of Old Olive and some gold leafing for accent, it’s the soft blue, green and brown that make this card so rich.  I love the combination of Pool Party and Pear Pizzazz she used in the focal image, and the Soft Suede is a perfect backdrop.  If you love these colors as much as I do, please save this:Stampin' Up! Stamp Sets:  Flirty Flowers, Painted Harvest  Papers:  Soft Suede, Old Olive, Shimmery White  Inks:  Early Espresso, Pool Party, Pear Pizzazz, Old Olive, VersaMark  Accessories:  Pinewood Planks Embossing Folder, Silver Embossing Powder, Stampin’ Dimensionals

There’s more!  Now that you’ve read through (or quickly flipped through) my thoughts on Jennifer’s amazing card, please hop over to Jennifer’s blog (Westside Paper Creations) to see exactly how she created this card.  This is an amazing technique!  Prepare to be wow’d!  She’s created a quick video that walks you through it step-by-step.
