Blue Christmas with Seasonal Layers Thinlits

Inspiration is everywhere – I’m happy to find a “starting point” with sketches or colors or themes.  This week’s CAS(E) This Sketch layout gave me a wonderful starting point for a snowy blue card.  Here’s my card:Seasonal Layers Thinlits, Hang your Stocking, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Christmas cardAnd here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Snowy Backdrop.  I created this beautiful, textured backdrop on a piece of Shimmery Whisper White cardstock with ink pads and baby wipes.  I was first introduced to this technique earlier this year – I shared it with my local stamp club, and they went wild (as they should).  You can see that project here.  The background on this project was quite simple – I dabbed a balled up baby wipe (no fragrances or aloe) into the ink and dabbed it randomly on the shimmery paper.  So easy!  So beautiful!
  • Detailed Gorgeousness.  While I want to think my backdrop is the star of this card, it’s the sweet, detailed snowflakes that make this card so special.  The small, intricate snowflakes are a part of the Seasonal Layers Thinlits Dies that coordinate with the Colorful Seasons stamp set in the Colorful Seasons Bundle.  Here’s a look at these amazing (and versatile!) dies:

I layered the two snowflakes, one cropped in Dapper Denim and the other cropped in Shimmery White, and added a small Dapper Denim Glitter Enamel Dot.  How beautiful are they?!  Because the dies are so small, I did not crop them on the Precision Base Plate – instead I cropped them between two plates on the Magnetic Platform.  The sentiment on this card is from the Hang Your Stocking stamp set set in the Annual Catalog.Seasonal Layers Thinlits, Hang your Stocking, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Christmas card

  • An Unexpected Color.  I didn’t talk about the three colors I used with the baby wipes earlier because one of the colors is shockingly unexpected – but perfect.  I have noticed that Lydia Fiedler (Understand Blue) uses Tempting Turquoise in lots of her watercolor designs, so I tried it here too.  I couldn’t be happier with the end result – thanks, Lydia!  If you like this combination, too, please save this:Stampin' Up! 5. Beautiful background, it is just perfect for the snowflakes! Love the addition of tempting terquoise!!! It is unexpected and brilliant!!!

  6. This is such a beautiful card! I was playing with glossy cardstock for the first time this weekend and discovered that it is really, really different from anything else I’ve worked with. You did such a great job with it!

    • Thanks, Natalie! The Glossy Paper is really wonderful, isn’t it?! This card uses Shimmery White, which has a coarser surface. I’m going to be playing with Glossy White soon. <3

  7. Simply beautiful Brian. Blue and white or silver always make me think of winter and the winter holidays. This is a stunning project. BTW, thanks to your blog post title Elvis is singing in my head.

    • Hey Robbye! Thanks for your comments – I agree with the gorgeous blues. They always remind me of snow. Why is that?! Anyway, I appreciate your kind words. Glad I could give you a little earworm for the day. <3

  8. Beautiful background and I adore the layered snowflake and glimmer dot!

  9. Hi Brian:
I love blues and of all the blues I love turquoise the best. For some reason the Dapper Denim came through the computer more like Bermuda Bay. Strange that often the colors used do not show true on the internet. Anyway, your colors are so, so complimentary that regardless of how the colors come through they look amazing. I’d say that is due to the amazing guy that made the card. LOL What a wonderful Christmas card this is. The best part is that it could also be an amazing Hanukkah card as well. Thanks for sharing.

    • You’re so good to me, Grace! Thanks. I had a lot of fun making this card – I, too, thought about how beautiful this background would be on a Hanukkah card. You just might see it again. 🙂

  10. We have come to accept that the layering on your cards are perfection…but, I must say that I love how the white band going from end to end on the width of this card truly shows off your layering talents! Another WOW card!

    • Wow! Thanks so much, Sandra! I simply ran out of room to add another layer, so I decided to add the solid band. 🙂 I appreciate your kind comment.

  11. Your color choices are special for your card . Adding the T. Turq. adds a different Xmas color (remember when PURPLE was added to Halloween ?) I especially like that darling snowflake of blue and glimmer….so cute . Plus the sentiment with that swirly thingy underneath is charming !!!

    • Thanks so much, Sonny! I would have never picked Tempting Turquoise without Lydia’s guidance, but I’m happy with what it adds here. I’m glad you like this card. 🙂

  12. Chris R. from Iowa

So pretty. I was playing with the the leftovers from the Christmas tags from last year – the blue watercolor looking tags and the snowflake looks great on there. I am now going to layer them little tag and make into a regular sized card using your colors. I haven’t done the baby wipes thing for awhile so I think this will be a good time to play! Thanks for fun ideas.

    • Hey, Chris! Thanks for your comments! I’m so glad you are inspired by these colors – they are wonderful. You should definitely give the baby wipes another try – such a fun technique that will be perfect with your tags.

  13. Wonderful take on the sketch!

  14. Never tried the baby wipe technique and I love the colorful seasons stamp set!
