Trick or Treat for GDP104

I love the CASE the Designer Challenges at Global Design Project.  We get to make a project that’s inspired by the work of one of the designers.  This week we are CASEing (Copy and Selectively Edit or Copy and Share Everything) a card by Allison Okamitsu, my talented Canadian friend.  We can create a project inspired by the layout, colors, theme, stamp set, technique…  Here’s my card:

Creep it Real, Spooky Night Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Halloween cardAnd here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:GDP104Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • CASE 1 -Background.  I love the way Allison stamped “for a great” all over the background of her card – it creates a gorgeous backdrop for the “friend” diecut and the perfectly placed bow.  I love a good background, and I’m crazy about word-filled backgrounds.  Allison’s project inspired me to use this fun page from Spooky Night to create a background that supports the focal sentiment of my card. Here’s a look at the Spooky Night Designer Series Paper:Spooky Night, Stampin' Up!, Brian King 144610
  • CASE 2 – Layered Ovals.  I think I cut out every oval shape we have to find a unique layering for the sentiment on my card.  I tried black ovals behind the focal oval.  I tried scalloped ovals and the oval from the Lovely Words Thinlits.  Nothing seemed to work for me because I wanted to mimic the white borders I used on the outside of the card.  In the end, I found that a white oval layered on a white oval gave me the border I wanted without distraction.  I added a little bat from the Seasonal Tags Framelits Dies to fill the space to the right of the sentiment from Creep it Real.  What fun!
  • Quick and Easy?  When I started to make this card, my craft table was completely cleaned off.  All stamp sets were tucked away, all ink pads were nestled in their ink pad slots.  All was good.  I knew this card would be quick and easy, so…by the time I was done, it looked as though heavy winds had made their way through the Fungeon (my craft room).  Here’s the “after-craft”:Creep it Real, Spooky Night Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Halloween card

Stamp Sets:  Creep it Real  Papers:  Spooky Night Designer Series Paper, Pumpkin Pie, Thick Whisper White  Inks:  Archival Basic Black  Accessories:  Layering Ovals Framelits Dies, Seasonal Tags Framelits Dies, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to the Global Design Project site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Good morning Brian,
Great card. Seeing your craft table gives me leverage to show my husband why I need more tables for crafting. He doesn’t understand why I need more space.
    Have a great day.

  2. My favorite part . . . the patterned bat matching the DSP border. It’s the little things, right?

    • Thanks, Mary! I love that little bat, too. I cropped him from the paper like that so that it would appear that the bat is cut out through all those layers. 🙂 And, yes! The little things make a difference.

  3. I like all the layers…the look and the feel. Great card Brian!

  4. You picked exactly the perfect two patterns from the Spooky Nights DSP. Love that paper. The picture of your craft desk speaks to me, well, maybe it’s yelling.

  5. So cute!! I love the layers and the focus on the sentiment.

  6. Great card Brian, King of Layering. I’m constantly amazed at how razor straight and perfect your layers are. You picked the perfect dsp for this card. I love it! Great job

  7. I had to laugh Brian as I thought I was the only one that started out to make a card with a nice clean and clear surface and ended up with a solid half hour of clean up when I was done. I feel so much better knowing that I am in the company of my card mentor! LOL I think this DSP is so much fun. Your card is fabulous and I have to agree that the white on white oval was definitely the way to go. Just perfect (as always)!

    • Thanks so much, Grace! I’m so glad you like my card and am thrilled to learn that you are a messy crafter, too! I blame it on the perfectionist in me. I need to play with everything to figure out what works best. 🙂

  8. Great card, Brian! As always I love the layers! Thanks for sharing the pic of the “after-craft”. At least we know you’re human? Stay safe today – hope all is well!

  9. Great card (love the bat) and I love the after-craft shot. My table looks like that after almost every project.

  10. Love the card, but REALLY love the “after-craft” shot!

  11. Cute Halloween card, so balanced, smart to add the bat.

??? Brian, even your mess looks neat, it shows that you’re looking for the right sentiment and cut out vs my table would have that and tons more. However, I have a rule to start with a fresh clean table after each project. My rolling cart next to me helps with that. ??

    • I mostly start with a clean table, but sometimes time doesn’t permit. I’m pretty good about putting away most of the stuff before starting something new. Thanks for your comments!

  12. I never EVER post comments, but I can’t resist this time. Love this card and LOVE that your craft room is called the Fungeon. I laughed and laughed!

    • Thanks so much for your comment, Jessica! I really appreciate it. I’m so glad you like the card and your introduction to the Fungeon. 🙂 It’s a renovated crawl space – can’t give it a super-fancy name. <3

  13. Julie ☀️?? Reardon

Love the after craft photo. Do that more often please!! Makes you seem more human and less craft super hero. ;-p

    • 🙂 I’ll try to spend more time showing the non-super-hero side of me. It’s just tough when that’s so much of who I am. 🙂 Thanks for your comment, Julie! <3

  14. What a lovely card Brian, really awesome.

  15. Awwww, what a sweet card , I love it my friend ♥️
    Tfs hugs Frenchie ♥️
