Best Birds for a GDP Color Challenge

When I sat down to create a card for this week’s GDP Color Challenge – Pear Pizzazz, Soft Suede and Calypso Coral – I immediately knew I’d be playing with the Best Birds stamp set and coordinating Birds & Blooms Thinlits Dies. Both are found in Stampin’ Up!’s 2017 Annual Catalog and perfect for Spring! Here’s my card for this week’s GDP color challenge:

Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration: Pear Pizzazz, Soft Suede, Calypso CoralTips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Best Birds and Birds & Blooms Thinlits Dies. Best Birds is a carry-forward from Stampin’ Up!’s 2016 Annual Catalog, so the bundled pricing for the stamp set and coordinating dies ended with that catalog. The items are still in the 2017 Annual Catalog. With great sentiments and fun images, this set is perfect for Spring. Here’s a look at the Best Birds stamp set:

Just look at those sentiments – so crisp and clean. I could use them all. Here’s a look at the coordinating Birds & Blooms Thinlits Dies:

Not only are there some Framelits to cut out stamped images, but there are some great cutouts that coordinate with this set.

  • Striped Background. I created this fun, diagonally-striped background with strips of colored cardstock – 1/2″ strips of Calypso Coral and Pear Pizzazz and 1/4″ strips of Soft Suede. I added adhesive to 5″ x 3-3/4″ cardstock base (any color will do since it’s all covered up) and then glued down the strips. After gluing each strip, I snipped the edges with my paper snips. What an easy and fun way to create an original background for a special card!
  • Blender Pen Watercoloring. I stamped the branch and flowers with Archival Basic Black ink. Once that dried, I colored each of the items with ink and a Blender Pen. Such an easy way to add color to an image. For each of the flowers, I added a thin layer of Calypso Coral. Once that dried, I added a deeper intensity of Calypso Coral to the center of the flower petals. It really adds a lovely depth to the flowers. Tip: make sure the ink dries before applying more ink so that you don’t wet the paper too much, causing it to pill. Best Birds, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP129I added the flowers to the card front with a Mini Glue Dot – a great adhesive that adds a little bit of lift (but not as much as Dimensionals) to the flowers.

Spring is just around the corner (even in those parts of the country where it already feels like Spring). Are you all stocked up with the supplies you need for the season?

I hope you’ll pop over to the Global Design Project team site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Springtime birds … great card, great colors!
Thank you, Brian. Have a great weekβ˜€οΈ

  2. First, I love this greeting! β€œIt’s a Good Day”
Brian, this is such a fun card, it shouts Spring, and. . . the little bird’s head is up which means he/she is singing to express how good this day really is.
Finally, excellent job on the strips to make a beautiful background!

    • Thanks so much, Katrina! I, too, love this sentiment. I’ve used it a couple of times because it’s a great reminder that today is a good day. πŸ™‚ So glad you like the card – I appreciate your comments.

  3. I love this card! The background of different colors is perfect! And your flower dimension is perfect.

  4. Sweet design and stripe. Perfect for spring. Pretty color blending on the flowers and leaves.

  5. The stripes are the bomb! My eye goes right to them! Great card!

  6. I always have trouble with making branches but you make it look so easy Brian! I love how you created your own “DSP”. Looks great!

  7. I agree with Stampinpeace about loving the striped DSP you made. Wow! Beautiful card. Love the little die of the bird. At my age, every day I’m vertical and pain-free is a good day, which is most days. Love the sentiment! Have a great day.

  8. Love the background you made with the stripes. I’m always looking for a way to use scraps and your way is not only beautiful but sounds like fun to do. I’m with HJ in that every day I’m vertical and pain free is a great day! Love the little bird. Great job, great card, great day! πŸ™‚

  9. I can’t say I would have put those three colors together, but I like the idea of using strips as a background.

    • Thanks so much, Elizabeth. The colors worked beautifully (IMHO) for a branch, leaves and flowers. The strips of cardstock are my “go-to” in a tough situation. πŸ™‚

  10. Great color combinations and very nice interpretation of the challenge. Aren’t you the clever one to incorporate the challenge colors into DSP!

    • πŸ™‚ Thanks so much, Sharon! The sweet images didn’t give me enough of the colors, so I had to build a bold background to go with them. Glad you like it! <3

  11. Brian you really nailed this challenge. I love your layout.

  12. As always, the card is wonderful. I think this color challenge is one of the hardest I have ever seen but you nailed it 100%. How clever to make your background paper. That assures perfect coordination. Another winner.

    • Gee…thanks, Nancy! I had fun with this challenge and loved these colors together. I love that I get credit for suffering through them. πŸ™‚ So glad you like what I did with them. <3
