Happy 100th Birthday, Ms. Turner!

You are going to want to keep reading ALL THE WAY to the end of today’s post. I promise you’ll be glad you did! How often do you get to offer happy wishes to someone you love on their 100th birthday?! It doesn’t happen a lot. When Ms. Turner, an active member of Mom’s church, celebrated her 100th birthday, Mom asked for a special card for this special lady.

Mom asked me to make a special card for Mom could give Ms. Turner on her 100th birthday. What a special gesture! I chatted with Mom several times about it in the months before the monumental birthday. That request shifted to a need for individual cards from each of Mom’s closest friends and then, maybe, from the group of them. When I (somewhat sarcastically) suggested that I could just make a card for the whole congregation to sign, Mom jumped on that idea. I was stuck, but I loved the challenge – and it felt a bit more special.

At a Rocket City Stampers retreat in March, the hosts showed us how to make an Explosion Card which combines three panels from the Envelope Punch Board to create a huge card that unfolds multiple times. This was the perfect card for Mom’s church to give Ms. Turner since they could all sign on multiple panels of the card.

Here’s how I built this multi-fold card:

Steps to Make an Explosion Card, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Here are the steps with a little bit more instruction for each part.

Step 1 - Explosion Fold Card with Envelope Punch Board, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingI used 12″ x 12″ Kraft cardstock (retired) to build the base for the Explosion Card. The center panel gives a 6″ x 8-1/2″ panel (the largest panel on the Envelope Punch Board) with an 11-1/2″ x 11-1/2″ piece of cardstock. I believe the other two panels are 6″ x 4-1/2″ but I could have created three 6″ x 8-1/2″ panels if I wanted. As long as the height is the same on each panel (and as long as the card will fold), any size will work.

Step 2 - Explosion Fold Card with Envelope Punch Board, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Based on the size of each panel, I cropped cardstock that Mom could glue into each panel of the card after folks had signed it. I can’t imagine the shape the card would be in if it were passed around to lots of people who had to unfold and fold it back over and over. There are three panels on the inside of the card and two panels on the outside.

Step 3 - Explosion Fold Card with Envelope Punch Board, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

I decorated the front of Ms. Turner’s card with this gorgeous Calypso Coral and Silver Foil patterns from the Sweet Soirée Specialty Designer Series Paper. The panel looks like a tasteful amount of confetti in celebration of her big party. I added three numbers with Silver Foil and the Large Numbers Framelits Dies – how many people can say they get THREE NUMBERS on their birthday card?!

Step 4 - Explosion Fold Card with Envelope Punch Board, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

The card, once folded, is wrapped with Silver 3/8″ Metallic-Edge Ribbon. While the Large Numbers Framelits Dies and Sweet Soirée Specialty Designer Series Paper retire at the end of May (or when supplies run out), the Silver 3/8″ Metallic-Edge Ribbon will continue into Stampin’ Up!’s 2018 Annual Catalog.

Here are the products I used to make this card:

I promised you a wonderful payoff if you make it all the way to the end of this post – and now it’s time to deliver.

Here’s a super-sweet photo of Ms Turner, holding the card I made for her (and shared with you today) to celebrate her 100th Birthday.

Ms. Turner's 100th BirthdayHow beautiful is she!? I’m so happy I could play a small part in her birthday celebration.

  5. What an awesome occasion! My mom, Mrs Turner, just turned 91 last month. I wish I could understand this card… do you have a video? I can’t understand how it closes…. I may be dense but a video would help see how it opens and closes.

    • Happy birthday to your mom, Connie! The card is comprised of three envelopes from the Envelope Punch Board. Each of the outside envelopes is glued to the middle envelope at the flap. Each envelope folds up, and then they all fold together. If you play around with it, I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out.

  12. Awesome card and so special that you could help your mom make this day so special for the birthday lady. I still cannot believe stampin up has retired the number framelit dies. So glad I has this set. They are just perfect. Easy to use and the “right” size. I made a magnetic picture frame to store mine above my big shot.

  13. Wow! What a perfect design for a beautiful card that will have multi-signers. Mrs. Turner looks amazing to be 100. Love her picture. You were so sweet to make this beautiful card that she will treasure. Isn’t it funny how a design comes to you at the right time? I could see this design having quotes or flowers, etc. on each panel to make it a wonderful card for a get well, thinking of you, baby or birthday card. Great job, Brian. Enjoy your day!

    • Thanks so much, HJ! It really did come to me at the right time. This type of card would be gorgeous with lots of sentiments or images inside – I left it blank for all the signatures. I’m so glad you like the card, HJ! Thanks for your sweet comments. <3
