Thank you for Your Kindness & Compassion

On Friday, I posted a beautiful sympathy card for the current FabFriday sketch challenge – you can see that card here. As I discussed in the post, you can never plan for when you’ll need a card to show your sympathy for someone’s loss. It’s such a tough time for all involved, so I recommended making sympathy cards ahead of time. Today I’m sharing another idea that’s closely connected – make batches of thank you cards that you can give as a gift to someone who is grieving. Friends and family have a wonderful way of showing support in times of loss – they show up with food, flowers and donations. You can be the friend who shows up with lovely, handmade cards that they can send to those who’ve supported them.

With this in mind, I made this card:

Kindness & Compassion, Lovely as a Tree, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, sympathy card

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Kindness & Compassion. You know how much I love a good sentiment stamp set, right? I might have passed over the Kindness & Compassion stamp set (I have some great sets with sympathy sentiments already), but the gorgeous fonts pulled me in. Once I read the sentiments, I realized there was something there that we don’t have anywhere else – a thank you response to sympathy shown. We have sets that offer condolences, but this set both offers condolences and [uniquely] expresses gratitude for condolences shown. Here’s a look at the gorgeous sentiments in the Kindness & Compassion stamp set:Kindness & Compassion, Stampin' Up! 146729
  • Lovely as a Tree. The longest running stamp set in Stampin’ Up!’s current catalog is Lovely as a Tree – it debuted in 2001. It’s as popular today as it was seventeen years ago. The images of the trees tend to take center stage on most projects (especially during Autumn), but I think this collection of oak leaves and acorn is pretty spectacular. That’s when “Trees” was first published from author Joyce Kilmer. Here’s a look a that poem: Trees by Joyce Kilmer
  • Markers, Papers and Colors. There are three colors that really shine in this card. The Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper panel combines shades of Soft Sea Foam and Mint Macaron – such a soft, sweet panel of paper. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper (which is part of July’s “Buy 3, Get 1 Free” Designer Series Paper Sale): Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, 146331I colored the oak leaves with NEW Soft Sea Foam Stampin’ Blends and the acorn with NEW Soft Suede Stampin’ Blends. The cardstock panels on either side of the focal panel reinforces these colors. If you like this warm combination of Soft Sea Foam, Mint Macaron and Soft Suede, please save this:Stampin' Up! 1. Love this card! Lovely As A Tree was one of the first stamp sets I bought! Still one of my faves. I had long forgotten parts of this poem. I will be saving it to share with the grandkids! Thank you! (I’m going to make a card with that acorn today!).

    • Thanks so much, Candy! I don’t often pull this set out because all of the trees are so familiar. I love them all, but I love these leaves most. <3 Have fun!

  2. I thank you so much for always bringing to my attention the little stamps or pieces that I am not truly seeing and using. You also make me want to branch out on using colors that aren’t in my “normal” habits. I truly never thought on the oak leaf…thank you!

  3. Beautiful card, Brian. I love that sentiment and your thoughtful idea of making a bunch for the family. Your layering and coloring really make it special. Enjoy your day!

  4. Gorgeous! The perfect color combo for such a card! Love it!

  5. A beautiful card as usual Brian. I love that stamp set and I don’t think I have ever used that particular stamp in the set. I had to take a second look at the set when you said it belonged there. Great color combination too. That word set is also on my wish list.

    • I’m so glad you like it, Leah! Every time I come across the oak leaves in my set, I’m excited and surprised. 🙂 These sentiments are lovely! <3 Thanks for your comments.

  6. Great idea to prepare thank you for those with the need. We used to send several stamps or a roll of stamps to the person who had lost someone as they have so many thank yous to send but to add some cards as well would be a really helpful thing to do. Thank you for the idea and for the great card using one of my favorite stamp sets!

  7. Beautiful sympathy card. Perfection share of the poem that ties it all together!

  8. Really sweet card and love the use of the Tranquil Textures DSP!

  9. The “Oak leaves and acorns” are my favorite stamp on this Senior Citizen SU stamp !! Love this set and don`t use it as much as I should !
I have sweet memories in regard to “Lovely As A Tree ” . Had to memorize it in 4th grade . B TW …I love trees and wonder if I was one in my last life …giggle !
Great card for it`s purpose .

  10. An absolutely lovely card and post today, Brian! Your pun made me chuckle ( it was perfect) and it was so nice to see that poem again. Thank you for a wonderful start to the day!

    • I had to go back to find where I made a pun – but I found it. It’s amazing how much I can forget from writing a post less than 24 hours ago. 🙂 Thanks!

  11. Lovely showcase of this awesome stamp set! Thanks for sharing the poem – so perfect for this set and the new Suite! ?

  12. Today’s post was very moving for me. I love your idea of making a group of cards for use of the family that incurred the loss. How thoughtful. I too have to admit that Lovely As A Tree was the first purchase I made from SU and I believe it was in the fall of 2001. It’s still a go to set for me. However, and I hate to admit this, I don’t think I’ve ever used the oak leaf cluster on a card. I’ll have to remedy that very soon. Thank you for the idea of making them as a gift. Cards last a lot longer then food, that’s for sure. Loved today’s post Brian.

  13. What a gorgeous card!!! Love everything about this card. Thanks for sharing!!

  14. Once again a great post. “Trees” was my mother’s favorite poem and I always have it as fond memories. Thanks for the great share of a wonderful poem.

  15. Brian, you made a lovely card and shared a great idea. Thanks.

Brian, this set was one of my first sets I purchased from Stampin’ Up! so it’s very dear to my heart.
I use it mainly for masculine cards and it’s perfect for those hard to create Sympathy cards.
Your card is lovely and, as always, beautifully layered.
Thank you for the sweet poem, it’s words really hit the spot.
    Big hugs,
    Maria.

  17. Brian, what a super lovely card! I too, have passed this set right by in the catalog, but now it’s on my must have list. And Lovely as a Tree is an all time favorite for all of us. Thanks for the lovely poem reminder too; it’s one of my favorites. Beautiful, my friend!

  18. Absolutely gorgeous card!! The “Lovely as a Tree” was one of the first ones I bought from SU and I’ve loved it ever since. Its images are so beautifully detailed and suitable for all kinds of cards for any occasion.
Your card is just beautiful, the colors are calming and soft, I never thought of creating cards to thank people for their support in times of sorrow so thank you for inspiring us to think about it.
And as always, your color combination charts are amazing, thank you for sharing them.
    XO
    Maria.

  19. What a lovely card! I really love the way you’ve matted the focal panel, with nothing on the top or bottom. I’m going to borrow that!
