Remember

It’s one of those rare days – we all know exactly where we were when the events of September 11, 2001 were set into motion. We also remember the hours following the events as explanations of the horror were unveiled. It was an event that was meant to tear us apart and destroy us – instead, it validated our fortitude. For a time, we united as a united people in the face of such a horrible attack. Today’s project is a simple one that pays homage to a day we should all remember. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Ribbon of Courage. To create this centerpiece for my card, I layered strips of Designer Series Paper over a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock. I used Real Red patterns from the Regals 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper and Pool Party pieces from Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper. The patterns gave me just what I wanted to mimic stripes and stars in the American flag – and they weren’t too thick to crop with the Support Ribbon Framelits Dies Cards. • Simple Sentiment. With a card like the one I’m sharing today, the image is the focal point. The supporting sentiment, though, plays an important part in the design. I searched for sentiments all over the catalog that would be appropriate for this card – there are quite a few. I’m glad, though, that I have Tabs for Everything – it’s a set that’s filled to the brim with lots of words that are perfect for lots of occasions. I cropped the heart with the large heart from the set and layered the sentiment over top of the heart. I originally wanted the heart in the center of the ribbon, but that covered up all of the stripes in the center, so I scootched it over a bit – I quite like the offset heart.Support Ribbon Framelits Dies, Tabs for Everything, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingEven if you don’t plan to make tabs with this set, it’s a good one to have. • Color Combination. While the heart of this card is red, white and blue, black pays an important role on this card. My design once had a red backdrop with a Pool Party top panel – I switched out the Pool Party panel for a Blueberry Bushel one so that all elements would pop off the page. The black layer was added to tie to the sentiment banner and to add solemnity to the card. All four of these colors play an important role in this card:Stampin' Up! I love what we do. Making cards can help us to celebrate or offer comfort. Making cards can also be a cathartic experience. This was a special card for me to make, and I’m so grateful I could share it with you today. We should always remember September 11 and remember the lessons we learned – how to work with one another and how to be kind to one another in the face of adversity. Much love!

Thanks for stopping by today!

  13. ‘Never Forget’. That is powerful. I have been to Ground Zero many times when visiting NYC. I have moved South but, I still have that strong pull in my heart, on this day, every year on commemoration day for 9/11. It stays with you, a long time. This is a good thing, for it makes me to ‘Never Forget’.

  14. Gorgeous card Brian. I remember exactly the tragedy. We were in my son’s kidney doctors office and the doctor sent my son to the bathroom so he could tell me the events that were unfolding. When my son fell asleep on the two hour drive home I was able to put the radio on and get updated. It was terrifying and we’ve been praying for peace in the hearts of all ever since. What a clever layering of stars and stripes.

  15. Absolutely beautiful, such a fitting tribute to innocent lives lost.
    Captured perfectly.
