You’ve Been on My Mind for CTS299

I planned out today’s card before I sat down to create it – it was going to be the most gorgeous, over-the-top floral creation with bold, diagonal stripes, a bright flower, a gorgeous butterfly and a sweet sentiment. The more I played with that card, though, the more it transformed. Only the sentiment remained. The final card is still beautiful (in my opinion), but it has a much simpler and more masculine appeal. Here’s my card:

CTS299Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Awesome, New Stuff. While I’ll still be sharing gorgeous products from our Holiday Catalog and Annual Catalog over the next month, I can’t help but to dip into some new, gorgeous products from Stampin’ Up!’s upcoming 2019 Occasions Catalog. The sentiment, which I love, is from the gorgeous Butterfly Gala. This set pairs with a double-butterfly punch. You are going to want both, so go ahead and start making your list. 🙂 Here’s a look at the Butterfly Gala stamp set: Butterfly Gala, Stampin' Up!, 148580When the gears in your mind start turning, it’s hard to make them stop. Although I intended to pair the “you’ve been on my mind” sentiment with a beautiful flower and butterfly, I thought it worked perfectly with the gears from the Garage Gears Thinlits, too. • Textured Cogs & Wheels. This collection of cogs and wheels are cropped from a Tranquil Tide piece of Classic Garage 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper – a page that’s filled with Tranquil Tide-on-Tranquil Tide texture, but check out the texture created from the impressions by the die – this is going to be one of my all-time favorite dies:Butterfly Gala, Garage Gears Thinlits Dies, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingRather than just squaring off the ends of my 1/2″ sentiment, I cut them at an angle on either side. I played with other additions (like banners on either side), but I opted to leave it alone.
  • Fresh Color Combination. When I set out to make my gorgeous floral card, Pool Party and Rich Razzleberry were a great base for a bright flower. I was excited by how well the Tranquil Tide gears worked with the pale blue and rich purple. 1. Boy, I thought I had slipped a cog when I was reading about butterflies, flowers, and diagonal stripes? Did the wrong photo get attached to the text? I kept reading and then it made sense. Plus, now we have a sneak peek at the butterfly set. Love the angle cuts on the sentiment. Just a fun card with a fun color combo. I can hardly wait to see that garage DSP, the tone on tone remind me of a well oiled gear or cog with maybe a little bit of oil mixed in. I can just see me using the cogs and gears for a made on purpose belated birthday card! Boy, the gears are turning with ideas.

  2. Gorgeous color mix and I adore how you cropped the sentiment for a masculine edge!

  3. This card makes me laugh out loud!!!

  4. Very clever ! Great card !!

  5. Ohh!! Brian, the wheels on your mind are constantly turning, you come up with the most brilliant ideas and fabulous color combinations.
The sentiment couldn’t be more perfect for this design.
    Clever and totally awesome.
    Thank you for sharing.
    XO

  6. Oh I love the cogs and gears! Clever take on the sketch!

  7. Wow, that is extremely clever- both the sentiment and die together plus the perfect way it works for the sketch! This is why the word genius pops in my head when I think of you!

    • Wow! Thanks so much, Windy! I’m so happy you see the connection and like my project. I was trying to force this sentiment into a sweet card – I’m so happy this worked well, too. <3

  8. Oh, did I miss the flowers? The butterflies? I sure get it that you start with one idea and end up with something completely different! Love the result!

  9. I got two good laughs from your blog today. First, as I was reading about your thought process of butterflies and flowers and how that got changed to the gears, I thought how that happens to all of us. Then I laughed again when I focused on your card with that sentiment paired with the gears. The recipient will definitely get a chuckle from this fun card. Have a great day, Brian.

    • Yay! Thanks so much, Hilda! I’m so happy you made the connection between the gears and the “going through my mind” sentiment. Also happy you shifted gears with me while I was talking you through my convoluted thinking. 🙂

  10. So clever! Love the combination of sentiment and the gears!

  11. Always the clever designer! Love your thought process and this card showcases the fabulous new Garage Gears dies perfectly. Color scheme works for anyone, too. What a great card.

    • Thanks so much, Linda! I struggled with this, maybe, being too simple. The colors and gorgeous gears, though, made it feel special enough to me. So glad you like it. <3

  12. Well Brian – since I’m married to a “gear head” I can’t wait to see the rest of that set. He’s built everything from race cars to a 1912 roadster. He will be really surprised when I come up with cards for him with gears on them. He is going to love it. The saying is one I’ve been searching for it seems like forever because I love to send cards to friends for no reason other then I’m thinking of them. So, my wish list for stamp sets from a catalog I haven’t even seen yet grows every day. I’m itching to get my hands on it. Your card is sensational as always!

    • Thanks so much, Grace! Your husband will be so happy to buy this bundle for you – and he’ll have great cards to send to his gear head friends. Thanks so much for your comments. I’ll have a copy of this catalog in the mail to you as soon as I can order them. <3

  13. Brian – Great card! I used to think my mind was the only one that ended up going down a different path compared with what I started out with. I don’t feel so alone now! Love the card…. 🙂

  14. Love it! Now I’ll have to get those gears! Especially since the hubster is a “gear head” who loves to work on his truck! Thank you!

  15. Don’t you just love the creative process and where it takes us! Your gears may be a long way off from flowers, stripes, and butterflies but this is a fabbo design just the same. Love these colors!

    • Thanks so much, Jen! I’m always willing to go where my changed mind takes me – it’s just not commonly this far off from where I started. 🙂 Thanks for your kind words. <3

  16. Did you emboss your gears as well? I really love these colors together and didn’t know I did until you shared this card! I saw this at OnStage and was so in love, I had to order it! This is one of my most farovite bundle in the Occasions catalog. Thank you so much for sharing your card with us! Happy Holidays to your mom, as well as you and your souse!

    • Thanks so much, Gloria! This die embosses AND cuts, so the work is done for us. 🙂 Because this is cropped with a DSP that has the appearance of texture, it adds an additional layer to the die. I’m so glad you like it. Thanks for the well wishes – sending them to you and yours, too! <3
