How Sweet It Is & Calls for a Celebration

It’s time for another CASE the Designer Challenge with the Global Design Project. As we learned this weekend, there are so many places to find inspiration for the project we make (see Saturday’s post for a laugh). I love the opportunity to create a project that’s inspired by the art of my fellow team members on GDP – always a joy! This week we are CASEing a gorgeous, rainbow-colored project by Steffi Helmschrott, a talented Stampin’ Up! demonstrator and friend from Germany.  Here’s my notecard-sized card (3-1/2″ x 10″ scored at 5″):

GDP176When we CASE (Copy and Share Everything or Copy and Selectively Edit), we find inspiration in a project – theme, color combinations, layout, products used – and create our own project by making changes to make it our own.  When CASEing, it’s important to give credit to the original designer – it doesn’t take away from your project at all.  As you can tell, I was inspired the stripes of color on Steffi’s gorgeous card. I also took a cue from the way she showcased her sentiment in bold, black rectangles.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Playing with Stripes. The stripes of color on this card are shades of Coastal Cabana and Melon Mambo from the How Sweet It Is Designer Series Paper from the Occasions Catalog. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in this fun pack of papers:How Sweet It Is, Stampin' Up! 148568I cropped the panel for the front of my card, cutting along the stripes, allowing them to run right off the side of the card base. With a remaining piece of cardstock, I cropped the heart (upside down from the panel on the front of my card). When I positioned the heart back over the Designer Series Paper, the panels of color lined up but weren’t matched up. Calls for a Celebration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Valentine's Day cardI cropped all three hearts on this card with the Be Mine Stitched Framelits Dies, a must have set of dies that can be used all year long:Be MIne Stitched Framelits Dies, Stampin' Up!, 148527
  • Fun Sentiment. Do you recognize the sentiment on my card? If you are scratching your head and wondering where you may have seen it before, I’m going to tell you. How cool am I?! First let me give you one more look at this fun sentiment:Calls for a Celebration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Valentine's Day cardHere’s the thing – this sentiment isn’t from the Occasions Catalog or Sale-a-Bration – you’ll have to go all the way back to the Annual Catalog where Calls for a Celebration debuted. I love this set and have used it several times – for this card, though, I snipped out these words to pay homage to Steffi’s sweet card. • Shiny Heart. Who doesn’t want a shiny heart? This element gives a little texture to this card while helping to balance the sentiment inside the heart. To achieve this, I stamped a pad of VersaMark ink on Melon Mambo cardstock, sprinkled it with Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder and then heat set it with my Heat Tool.Calls for a Celebration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Valentine's Day cardWith all the matte finishes on this card, the shiny heart is a stand-out. I needed something special, and the embossing powder gave me just what I needed.
