Beautiful You in Gorgeous Plaid

This week’s Paper Players challenge asks us to play with plaid or checkered patterns. What fun! I’ve been wanting to play with a gorgeous Christmas plaid (but without the Christmas feeling), so I reached for my Beautiful You stamp set and my Under the Mistletoe Designer Series Paper and got to work. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Beautiful You and Under the Mistletoe. This sketched image of a woman walking with an umbrella can be used for all sorts of reasons, happy or sad. I think the image is perfect for a “I’m thinking of you” as she walks through the rain with support from her thoughtful friend. Here’s a look at Beautiful You:Beautiful You, Stampin' Up! 143637I stamped her on Thick Whisper White and again on a scrap piece of this pattern from Under The Mistletoe. After I snipped the umbrella and dress from the patterned paper, they lined up perfectly with the pattern beneath. I just love this paper-snipping technique – and she’s a fun/easy one to play with. • Using Labeler Alphabet. I wanted a sentiment that could pop off the side of the oval to help balance the off-center oval. I knew that the block letters from Labeler Alphabet would give me a bold sentiment and allow me to create whatever supportive sentiment I wanted to create. “Sending” was way too long for me to say “Sending Love” so I went with a sweet “We Love You.”Beautiful You, Labeler Alphabet, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Thinking of You cardHere’s a tip for using the Labeler Alphabet – place letters on opposite sides and opposite ends of the G block. I have a handful of these blocks, so I could easily keep the “E” and “O” on there for their next turn at bat.Clear Block G with Labeler Alphabet stamp set, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Color Combination. I love the combination of Old Olive and Night of Navy in this gorgeous plaid paper. I added a little border of Smoky Slate to bring in a third, grounding color. 1. Brian, I love this card, the image is beautiful but you made it even more lovely by paper snipping her umbrella and dress, and then, to top it all, you lined up the image just so perfectly on your panel.
Love the Smoky Slate card base, it frames your image beautifully.
    Thank you for sharing.
    Hugs.

    • Thanks so much, Maria! I love this plaid paper, so I was excited to give her a matching plaid outfit. I always appreciate your kind, thoughtful comments! Thanks! β™₯

  3. This is a really sweet card. I love your out-of-the-box thinking in using the plaid and your fussy cutting is awesome. Enjoy your day!

    • Thanks so much, Hilda! Fussy cutting on this sketchy design is easy – the bold brushstrokes are very forgiving (as long as you glue them down perfectly). Thanks!

  4. What a great idea to dress her in plaid…beautiful! Love the gray matte, so striking.

    • Thanks so much, Dawn! I love this plaid and am happy with how it turned out. I was happy, too, with how much the thin strip of gray added.

  5. I’m always mad about plaid and this dress and use of the designer series paper as a background couldn’t be more polished and cool!

  6. I love your paper piecing on this, Brian! And that’s a good tip about the block, too. I do that often but I am afraid my customers get freaked out by it, LOL! Anyway, your pretty lady looks amazing in her color-coordinated plaid out and umbrella! Thanks so much for playing with my challenge at the Paper Players this week!

    • It was a wonderful challenge, LeAnne! Thanks so much for your kind comments – I’m so glad you like the card and the tips for using this fun stamp set. Thank you! β™₯

  7. Funny you did paper piecing today…we have a challenge in a few weeks with it and I looked back at all your cards and watched some old videos of yours to make my card just yesterday. This is awesome! Love the sentiment.

  8. What an exceptional design! I love this Card! The way you used the plaid is fabulous!

  9. This card is the perfect combination of FUN. You tip for using the Labeler Alphabet set is brilliant. Thanks for sharing with us.

  10. Have a business question for you. If your customer doesn’t order $150, do you send them anything for placing an order?
I love your cards and they are often what I use for placing my order to use in my monthly card group.
AND when do you find the time to create?
Looking forward to your online with Mary.

    • Hi Terry, I occasionally send small gifts to my customers who either place host-qualifying orders or add the host code. There’s nothing set in stone, though. I create most of my projects during my weekend, but I sometimes create cards after work during the week. I love to create, so I find time. πŸ™‚

  11. You are so cleaver. I love the card.

  12. O.K. Brian – so I want to know your secret to getting the snipped dress and umbrella to line up so perfectly with the plaid on the background. This card is absolutely fantastic and yes, I read your explanation at least 5 times but maybe I’m so in awe of your abilities that my mind won’t take in all that talent at one sitting. LOL This is one of the most beautiful cards I’ve ever seen. You never cease to amaze me. I want to adopt you but Mary already has you. Dang!

    • Thank you – a thousand times over. I stamped the image and cropped it with an oval. I then decided where I wanted it on the card. Paying attention to where the plaid marks were on the positioned oval, I stamped the lady on a scrap piece of plaid paper just in the same spot of the plaid. I still use my Stamp-a-ma-jig for some placement assistance.

  13. Brilliant! The card concept, the paper piecing [and how meticulously you lined up the plaids], the addition of the gray matte, the tip about the labeler alphabet stamps–this is why we consider you The King. Thanks for another inspiring design!

  14. I’d say this card is a hit! Love the color choices, great paper piecing, and amazing creativity. As mentioned above….you are truly a King!

    • Thanks so much, Sharon! I really had a great time making this – took me quite a lot of time to get it exactly how I wanted it – but I got there. So glad you like it! β™₯

  15. Brian, I always love it when you paper piece, this is no exception! Great way to get more use from a Christmas pack of DSP. Stampin Up is on the ball when they make the paper so versatile.

  16. Can I just say. This is the coolest card made with this stamp set. Like. Ever.

  17. Wow. Thanks. So. Much. I really appreciate it, Petra! β™₯

  18. Oh my this gal is fabulous in plaid!
